I usually just put the battens under the shelf and recessed from the front edge. Yeah, it’s not invisible or floating, but it’s done in a fraction of the time and once you ram it full of books and other crap, you can’t see the battens anyway.
That’s what I did last time. Looked OK, but thought I’d try something different this time. If it all goes pear-shaped I’ll revert to that method, I guess.
I’ll post pictures of me looking disgruntled next to a bunch of broken wood in a few months’ time.
martinhutchFull MemberWell, my woodworking teacher wasn’t too positive about my skills back in ’82, so this should be a breeze… :)
1martinhutchFull MemberCheers. Could be that 40mm oak would be the minimum thickness for this sort of nonsense. That would give me over 10mm each side after the router work.
EDIT: Cheers Kayak, that makes perfect sense. The alcove is not too bad, but definitely not 100 percent square.
martinhutchFull MemberYeah, battens to wall with screws, probably some small screws to secure it from underneath or above, depending on height. Was hoping not to have to use glue.
Alignment is going to take some care.
Just wondered how much material I needed to leave in terms of batten thickness vs oak thickness.
martinhutchFull MemberGiven that the local education news network seems to be working so efficiently, why would you want every potential future employer to know that you’re firing in official complaints?
If she must raise it, go through with the interview process, then, hopefully having secured the position, she can turn them down and tell them why.
1martinhutchFull MemberTheoretically, Can Trump win, then cut a deal and concede the presidency to the Dems in order for them to not prosecute.. ever?
No, in short. The only thing he can do once elected is resign and allow something even worse (his VP) to ascend to power.
If Trump wins, all his charges will probably evaporate anyway. It’s not the Dems prosecuting him, it’s various states and the DOJ.
martinhutchFull MemberCareful, he who shall not be named will be along shortly!
I’m sure he’s back in prison by now.
martinhutchFull MemberI’m guessing you’d like a nice walk rather than a full-on mountaineering experience? MB wouldn’t be where I’d start, there are other much easier options. A guide is a very good idea, mainly just to keep you moving at the necessary pace and through any rope sections with minimum faffage.
1martinhutchFull MemberEvery other pub/hotel in the Dales passes the cost of VAT onto the customer without it having a ruinous effect on their prices.
4martinhutchFull MemberAll these ‘moderates’ all happily voted for the Rwanda scheme and various other hardline policies. All of this is as much on them as it is on the kemis and Jenricks. Let them go down with the ship rather than drift into the LibDems and spread their poison over there
martinhutchFull MemberWhy do they always give hurricanes nice friendly names? They should name them after infamous criminals.
Milton Johnson (born May 15, 1950), known as The Weekend Murderer, is an American serial killer and mass murderer who committed ten known murders in a series of murders that spanned over three months in Will County, Illinois.
martinhutchFull MemberI’d be more understanding of his desperate desire to ride it if it looked like amazing riding with exposure, rather than, from what I could tell, just scrabbling down some horrible scree.
1martinhutchFull MemberI don’t think there is an organized display, but it’s a big enough village that there’s a fair chance of random back garden stuff.
martinhutchFull MemberIt seems an utterly pointless application of an LLM – it took my activity title & description and regurgitated it back to me using 100 words.
Probably burned more watts of power generating that than I did in the ride.
4martinhutchFull MemberIt’s just dismal, isn’t it? You can’t even turn off the existing congratulatory notifications, why would I want more of these amazing insights? Hopefully it will go rogue and start hurling out random insults:
“You live in Preston? God, what a dump, no wonder you’ve just posted your fastest ever 10Kms riding away from it! Make sure you lock up your bike properly when you get back!”
martinhutchFull MemberI was on the borrowdale bus recently, single track road with passing places.
On a list of people it’s probably pointless to try to intimidate, Borrowdale bus drivers would be fairly near the top.
and threatening to get out and ‘punch me up‘ whatever that meant.
That one is a similar vein to ‘PUT YOUR F**ING MOUTH SHUT!’ of yore.
5martinhutchFull MemberFreely admits that the whole Brexit thing was just to ‘win an argument’, like some massive sixth form debating society.
The man is a stain on our history, a degenerate narcissist, incapable of forming a proper human relationship, let alone run a country.
martinhutchFull MemberSeems quicker on Chrome desktop after your change. Still not lightning fast, but not ‘make a brew while waiting for page load’ slow.
martinhutchFull MemberYou’d never see Arsenal fans doing community outreach like this.

1martinhutchFull MemberTenner says the material on the left hand edge gets washed away in the first big storm, and the tarmac gets progressively undercut from there. Be interesting to see if they have the same commitment/funding to keeping it passable by the intended users. There’s a reason why tarmac isn’t the go-to material for slapping on top of paths like that.
2martinhutchFull MemberThe Sunday shows have former prime ministers on for interview fairly frequently, and he’s potentially an interesting guest in the weekend after conference, even though he just wants to plug his wiff-waff. So no problem with the show inviting him.
The problem is either the high probability of softball questions, or, as we’ve seen here, deliberately giving him advance notice of topics.
Kuenssberg needs to learn the difference between CC and BCC.
martinhutchFull MemberIt certainly is, new variants are popping up, vaccines offer some extra protection to the most vulnerable, but it is often far from trivial even for fit and healthy folk.
4martinhutchFull MemberMain suggested benefit of masks is to try to reduce onward transmission from you by catching droplets you exhale. There may be some protective effect to the wearer, in conjunction with other hygiene measures – handwashing etc, but they were never going to stop covid by themselves. At the height of the pandemic, in an unvaccinated population, anything that might reduce onwards viral load was worth a go, because even a minor effect would potentially prevent deaths and reduce the overall burden of disease on the health service.
For most people, they were only mildly inconvenient, and, as a community, IMO they helped reassure more vulnerable people, because they served as an outward demonstration that you cared about limiting the spread of the disease, and were prepared to do something to protect them.
2martinhutchFull MemberSo Laura got caught helping Boris with his interview prep then.
While prepping to interview Boris Johnson tomorrow, by mistake I sent our briefing notes to him in a message meant for my team. That obviously means it’s not right for the interview to go ahead. It’s very frustrating, and there’s no point pretending it’s anything other than…

martinhutchFull MemberI’m guessing their other surveys didn’t turn up anything they could use to try to knock you down a bit. In the good old days of gazundering, people weren’t so cowardly and just demanded a price reduction for no reason two days before exchange.
5martinhutchFull MemberWhen asking for his details and questioning the policy, I got told by the supervisor who had come over that I was being aggressive and rude (I was not, I’d not even raised my voice) and was asked to leave the shop.
They missed a trick really, could probably have flogged him some CBD oil on the way out to help him calm down about getting ejected.
martinhutchFull MemberHaving an oil-fired Rayburn was a profoundly depressing experience. Loud, inefficient, massive, crap for heating, crap for cooking. We got shot and replaced it with an external boiler.
We just moved house!
1martinhutchFull MemberHaving a tank sensor display plugged in the kitchen (with an oil-fired Rayburn) in one place I owned was a profoundly depressing experience.
2martinhutchFull MemberYou’d prefer we went back in time to the 90’s when the mobile signal dropped as you drove out of Dumbarton and then the next signal was at the 30 signs in Fort William?
The map (whose link I posted) suggests the mast would improve the signal for a few miles of the A896. But yes, I’d obviously welcome a return to those times, and by extension am probably supportive of the Clearances and the Glencoe Massacre too.
2martinhutchFull MemberDon’t try to back out of the lease once the contract has been signed and car has been ordered and then get a relative to come on here and whine about it? :)
As above, don’t be too fussy about make or even model, and always look behind the headline monthly figure to look at the overall charge, and penalties for stuff like excess mileage.
martinhutchFull MemberThey’re all much of a muchness delivery-wise., so I rate them on the quality and frequency of close passes on me, plus a scoring based on general witnessed standard of driving/parking.
DHL is the outright worst currently, followed by DPD Local (the blue logo one), APC Overnight, Yodel, Evri, DPD (red), then UPS.
2martinhutchFull MemberNo-one disputes that ‘wilderness’ landscapes across the UK are far from pristine, and our nations should be doing more to put that right. But organisations that want to stick phone masts, noisy generators, and associated infrastructure into them should have to demonstrate significant public interest for the development.
I’m struggling to see how that case can be made for a mast which, unless I’ve misread their map, seems to deliver coverage to two very short stretches of the A896, rather than actual homes and businesses. Does their overall project have funding that relies on % increases in coverage, regardless of whether it is occupied or not?
3martinhutchFull MemberOne of the issues with many of these applications is that the various operators are supposed to look at mast sharing first and that are failing to do this. If you had an EE signal then it’s worth finding out who the application is being made by and chasing that up.
A quick look at the coverage map suggests that 4G coverage on EE and Vodafone in Annat itself (and the surrounding roads) is fine, but nothing on O2 or Three. Not sure which other communities that proposed mast would be covering, but there is a mast already very close to Annat for Vodafone.
While it’s arguably a public good for these rural communities to have decent cellular access, having cellular access on all networks can’t be worth this, can it?
EDIT: A closer look at the map reveals that the Torridon Inn appears to be the only possible blind spot at the edge of the voda coverage of both the Annat mast and the one on the other side of the loch.
EDIT2: Their own coverage map says it’s effectively for a couple of sections of the A896 between Torridon and Loch Clair? https://wam.highland.gov.uk/wam/files/99D26AF7C1CD37E25502CDE2DA2B84A8/pdf/24_03722_FUL-RADIO_PLOTS_VMO2___22602-3398390.pdf
martinhutchFull MemberI suppose Liz is like the local loon, fascinating to watch but useless for sage advice.
Sounds like something a member of the Underground Transgender Mafia would say.
BREAKING ???
Liz Truss claims “Underground transgender mafia” were plotting against her and brought her leadership to an end.

martinhutchFull MemberI never managed to get my devices talking to the hub again, despite lots of resetting and calls to customer support. Gave up in the end. Thermostat still controls the receiver fine, but that’s it. No more turning on the CH from the train.
2martinhutchFull MemberIf I were a headteacher, I’d be happy to waste an hour of my time and probably several of his getting him in for an interview and asking him lots of questions centred about what he’d describe as the ‘woke’ bits of education.
