Paceman – I usually run 10-11 but have been as low as 9 without a problem so far. Not ridden anything rocky at 9 though, only roots

“we recommend that the wheels used have no greater than a 23mm internal rim width” rules it out for me. Just love wide rims and big tyres on my hardtails these days

I don’t have a fat fork and used to run an Ardent on a P35 but now am addicted to a Knard on a Dually. A few people just don’t like the tyre rather than the size so it’s something to be aware of. Looking forward to trying the Maxxis Chronicle (sort of Ardent 29+). 29+ does raise the front a little though.

Futonrivercrossing on here says he prefers a fat front to the Knard

and Ardents don’t fit in the rear.

Just caught this thread. I remember well the posts about the theft all those years ago. Jones owners were few and far between back then and I had met Chainline briefly at the Kielder 100 and was really gutted at his loss.

It’s amazing that the bike has resurfaced with all it’s parts. I think we’d all assumed it had been split and melted long ago.

Ride like you stole it Phil ;)

She looked really good on the pedally courses last year and seems even faster this. Fort William is a great opportunity for her

The rim is everything here. RRs, Ardents etc balloon up on wide rims.

I used to dream of a fat front but I have to make do with what fits

think I’ll try a Minion 2.5 on th RH sometime if the Vee Trax or Maxxis Chronicle don’t turn up soon, for the ‘enduro’ days

I don’t understand the problems people have with Knards. Had mine on an RH and now on a Dually. Sure not ideal in thick mud but surprisingly good the rest of the time if the pressure is low and you keep weight on it.

No burping yet on the Dually, just used Stans tape and the Knard went up easily. Need to give it a bash round Some rocks to really test it but we don’t have any in Berkshire.

I hope the finish is better on the Dually than on my P35s, those started to peel very quickly.

Seems like ages since you got a new bike Bonesetter. I think you’ll find it heavy and stiff.

    ( just kidding Mr Stooge)

If they aren’t races then they need to adjust the winning conditions:

“The winners will be those with the most points. Ties will be decided by firstly, the shortest completion time…”

Got passed by a few of the TrailTeax w*****s while out for a lovely bimble through the countryside. The organisers really need to tell their participants that these a multi-use bridleways not XC race courses.

That is except for red 4 & 5 which are a bit of a mess. 4 does finally have a path of sorts appearing again though.

I do have an L (19.5″) Surface, ETT 24.5 which is pretty similar to the Stanton. If you compare the 17s, then yes, the Surface looks short, but they also do an 18.5 which is slightly longer.

From what you say about travel then the Stanton sounds like a better fit for you as it’s 100-120, where as the Surface is 120-140. For me the Surface is for those days where I want travel and lots of it.

Yes, it’s slacker than a Solaris, maybe marginally lighter

The Stanton is marginally slacker than the Yelli, those figures are with a 100mm fork. With a 120 I expect the SA will be about the same. You will notice the chainstays, it will be slightly less poppable but gain in high speed stability

You will also notice the weight.

If the Stanton had been around a year ago I would have been tempted by it instead of the Surface. Darn sight cheaper.

I think it’s time to resurrect this thread and try to organise a 2014 ride out. What do you think?

Great round up. If money was no object I get a carbon Intense at the drop of a hat.

Cammer, I’m 6′ 4″ and used to ride an L Tracer 29, plenty big enough. Sold it to go back to a short chainstay 29 HT, too much bike for the the riding I was doing.

What muppets wrangler said is largely true there is some evidence that vitamin c can aid in scar reduction too. That’s in an oil/gel not orally.

I had one, just sold it. It was a shame to see it go, it’s a great bike but I just wasn’t using it enough to justify keeping it. Delivers it’s travel beautifully and seems to have masses of it.

Out of the box I didn’t like the stock Fox RP23 and replaced it with a BOS Vipr, I know others who run CCDBs.

I also think that the Head Angle is too steep and so I recommend some sort of Angle Set to slacken it out by a degree. Was interesting that the Spider Comp and Carbine 29 are both slacker than the T29 for similar intended use.

    Grease ports made maintenance easy.

PS they size big, the L was easily big enough for me at 6′ 4″
