To throw a spanner into the mix of options, have you considered two UK possibilities
    – Travers
    – Singular

I got a very nice new designed Ti Pegasus (prototype) frame from Sam and its a belter. Ride so sweet!
Got to be worth an email for the money your looking at.

Happy Alfine 8 user here – mainly bombproof
Does need the occasional (every 6mths) regrease of the bearings, as water can get into the hub if submerged on river crossings

I did run my 29er on 34/18 but as I mainly now use it for bikepacking have increased the back cog to 21T to give me more at the bottom end when the bike is heavy

They give a gentle heat (wont damage shoes) and portable so easy to take on holidays
Can be used for any footwear : ski boots, wellies, walking boots etc

Drink a pint of water before every meal – seriously!

It helps you feel fuller sooner (thus stopping you going back for seconds) and you hydrate at the same time

    Everyone’s a winner :P

A man decides to go on a vacation on a Pacific island. When he steps off the plane, it is amazing: Cool, light ocean breeze, palms gently swaying in the wind, white sandy beaches, drums off in the distance. He goes to his hotel, checks in, starts having the time of his life.

When he turns in on the first night, he can still hear drums off in the distance. They were charming at first, but now it’s little annoying, and he has a hard time going to sleep. The next morning, he goes to concierge and asks about the drums. The concierge replies: “The drums, they never stop. Very, very bad if they stop.”

So the man goes about his day in paradise, having a great time, but the drums never stop. He tries to ignore them, but they interfere with his sleep the second night. The next morning, fuzzy-headed from too many island drinks and too little sleep, again asks the concierge if something can be done about the drums. He gets the same reply: “Drums not stop. Very bad if they do.”

The rest of the day is not fun. The drums are driving this man crazy, and he isn’t getting any sleep. The next day he is ready leave. He packs his bags and goes up to the front desk to check out. But first the man finds the concierge to give the concierge a piece of his mind. Suddenly, the drums stop.

He says to the concierge: “They finally stopped! Thank god, I can get some sleep. I was about the leave.”

The concierge says: “This is bad. Very, very bad. Flee from this island while you still can.”

    “Why?”

    “Drums stop. Bass solo next.”

Not difficult to undo, but there is a bit of a knack i find there if you double the chain back at the link it comes apart easier

If your building wheels anyway, it doesnt cost much extra with a SP PD8 hub, and you get loads of options / flexibility

Let me know when your about as Im quite often over the chase
had a little bivi trip last weekend and got woken by a rutting stag, chasing a couple of hinds through the trees. Fantastic to get so close to nature, and right on the doorstep :)

    Graham,
If your anywhere around Cannock, your welcome to have alook at my set up. Similar to some posts above I run a SP PD8 to Revo light, but then I take power through a Plug 111, to power phone GPS etc
I can talk you through some options and different set ups (Pro’s and Cons)

    Let me know

Alfine 8 doesnt leak oil as it doesnt have internal reservoir of fluid

I was thinking of replacing grease for oil

Would be interested to hear how you would improve the sealing, on the hub body, to cope with being able to contain a fluid.

    On the Alfine 8

Non Drive side its a cup and cone – unscrew this

Drive side: Take off the cog, gear selector and other bits until you get to the Spring washer. I use some circlip pliers to get this off (the hard bit). A bit fiddly and usually the spring washer goes ping and ends up 10ft away.
After the spring you need to get the large round black plastic end piece off. This should only be hand tight but the first time you do it can take a bit of carefull persuasion to go round. Note: THIS IS A LEFT HAND THREAD. It is marked on the plastic.
Thats it – the hub then seperates

    Re-assemble in reverse order

IME opinion (just because I happened to do mine last week)

Got mine apart and bathed internals in Auto Transmission fluid
    Allow to drip excess off
Re-assemble with suitable grease on the various bearings
Alfine 8 doesnt leak oil as it doesnt have internal reservoir of fluid

benefits Ive noticed include, smoother gear changing and less draggy :)

If you use the revo/dyno hub combination then you need something to convert the Ac from Hub to DC for the GPS (Think Sinewave/plugII and others)
Easiest would be to boost straight from the MaxxD to GPS as its all DC
Otherwise have you thought about a light supplementary battery? I found these usefull and not too heavy

I bivi with the Womens version of the Neoair Xlite…the advantages of this are

    – Increased R rating (3.9) over the mens version @ 3.2(so Warmer)
    – 340 gramms lighter than mens equivalent
    – Thicker 6cm (more comfortable)
    – Womens size is between the Regular and Small (gives good coverage)

Converted the back half of the garage.

Some simple principles to follow when constructing, but not complicated

Probably got it back in numerous ways but that’s immaterial, it’s the principle that counted
