First proper one was 1990 GT Karakoram, loved it to bits for all of 4 months before some tea leaf had it from my garage – been paranoid about bike theft ever since…..

Does it chug along at start up and not gather revs, or not start altogether? If it’s the former, then my Volvo (Ford engine)has doen this – it is the throttle valve that’s jamming, if the latter then I’m stumped.

I can’t complain about my Rocky Mountain Vertex RSL – can be set up as a good trail bike or a race bike and it’s comfortable to the point that I’ve sold the FS bike as it’s additional comfort does not outweigh the combination of ride quality and speed that the Vertex offers.

I don’t know what size you’re after but CRC have some on offer – I wish they were that price when I bought one.

Thanks for the info all. Company sponsored and assisted to get there, so no massive outlay from the off – limits the risk a bit.

Thanks Pilot – it’s a harder than you think to make the decision when an offer is becomes a reality…..

Another thumbs up for the bikesnob page – if WADA/UCI read that they’d probably stop probing this particular case…

I bought a white suite off ebay and them some expensive taps from bathstore in the sales recently, the only thing that really gives away teh impression of being slightly cheaper is the toilet seat, which can be easily changed. As long as the bath is not too flexible/thin then it can feel like an expensive suite.

No real problems with mine on my Magura Louise’ – if I was going to go on an Apine trip I’d put the ventidiscs back on, purely from a heat dissipation point of view, but they;re fine for the UK gravity assisted rides.

I’ve just reacquanited myself and introduced my lad to it over our holiday at a park whihc had a lego room – I forgot how addictive and satisifying it is to play/work with (perhaps a result of being a desk jockey at work?) I’ve gotta hunt around the loft for all my old stuff tomorrow :)

Pretty easy, just follow the instructions you get with the bleed kit, no voodoo magic required.

Nothing to worry about, have you squeezed the lever whilst upside down or pushed the pads/pistons back in a long way when doing anything to them? If the levers feel soft they may need a bleed/top up in the reservoir.

Considering taking the chamois out of the leggings here – otherwise they fit well and I'd wear shorts under them anyway – even with this, for the money they seem pretty well featured.

I've got 2 colleagues who have bought from them over the last year – both very pleased with what they got and the service received. Most of the cars are ex lease, so they've been looked after, I think it's essentially the lease company selling to you so they don't take a chance on not recovering much at auction disposals.

Leave the nut on and tap with with a metal hammer – the rubber mallet just doesn't transmit enough shock to loosen it out of the lower.

Given the unpredictable mass, and the fact that I could pull wheelies without wanting to, I wouldn't want to do anything approaching a good off road ride with a child on the back of the bike. I've not tried a trailer but a few peoople on here seem to get on well with them.

Had plenty of rock strikes on my Vertex RSL, and a few stacks, but it's all okay. Admittedly it's my second frame after a crash last year cracked the first one – but it would have happened to an alu frame IMHO, it's just the cost of putting things right that varies.

When my bike is on the back of the car I also hang a notice up with my address on, stating that the bike is stored in the shed. Obviously any crim that reads this thinks it's a cunning sting operation, so my shed gets left well alone….

I don't have anywhere else to put it, and I don't have 40kg of concrete with a loop of reinforcement bar in it inside my house.

Just visited over the weekend – the trails are in great condition and the fireroads are to be viewed as an opportunity to get an easy training climb in ;)

Agree about the natural stuff too – worth trying to get a ride in around the valley towards Barmouth if you don't want to drive too far.

No, but Autocar gave it a good write up a few weeks back – it treads a good compromise between tha Focus and Golf. Seems like Alfa's back in the game with this car, after underdelivering on so many of its predecessors.

But if you're in the water an hour, you'll be colder, so surely burning loads off ;)

I was going to buy a cannondale Caad8 or 9 but after test riding them and seeing how much more confortable the Caad 9 was over the 8 I turned my attention to looking at something carbon and found that Evans are doing a special edition Cannondale Six carbon for £1400. Not got it yet but I'd imagine it's a belter, given how the alu frames I tested felt. The Cayo was in the running but the sizes didn't add up for me, short head tubes for their given sizes would have meant a gate of a frame or a load of spacers and a rising stem.

Is it a circlip holding it in? I wouldn't know why it's like that though, the forks etc should be enough to hold a headset in place…

Could be a stuck starter motor solenoid – are you getting any whirring noises that indicate the starter motor is spinning but not engaging?

Out of interest, how much did you pay for the not sure what to ask for mine if I split the bike….

It is bespoke in that the mounting trunion is a one off – the rest of the shock is a most fox shocks so it can be rebuilt – mine needed a new shaft last year and it was £120 all in for that and a service at TFT.

Keep them. They put on a damned good show and they are quite often reponsible for large crowds turning up at events which are raising money for charities (RNLI was the last benficiary of such a display the last time I went to see them)

The costs pale into insignificance compared to a lot of things and I they are a good way of bringing out a bit of patriotism (even I get struck by that bit!)

Has it got a particulate filter? If so, has it been changed – I believe that these need chaning at around 70,000 miles – the resulting blockage can lead to the symptoms you describe, along with faulty egr, faulty injectors, air in the fuel system etc. Start with the simple stuff like filters and if nothing like that works then it's garage time…

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^

That's a bargain, if it's the right one. I paid about £120 for a service with new shock body at TFT last year.

Can either be some reducers so that he can run a standard 1 1/8" headset, a reducing headset such as an FSA or Orbit 1.5Z R or he can now go for a 1.5" headset and 1.5" steerer, or tapered! Too many choices now TBH!

Have a look for a Rocky Mountain Vertex 50 RSL on sale – great frame, feels like a race bike and trail bike in one with the right setup – I got one and heavily upgraded it – I now see them on offer for quite a lot less than I paid…

That tool will only work on one end – I've got a genuine shimano bb tool that worked on sq taper cartridges before I had an octalink one – if yours is a non shimano tool that's probably the only reason it doesn't fit your new bb
