Pretty much same happened to me this week. Pair of 105 shifters – double won’t change. Never really answered my questions I sent thru.
So in the end just asked for refund & ordered a new pair (& hopefully benefiting from their current 10% offer on shimano) Original pair just came in bubble wrap bag, inners but no outers. Replacement pair came in a shiamno box inc outers. What’s all that about!
MarkSSFree MemberOn my ’13 frameset no star nut fitted & uncut steerer circa 275mm
MarkSSFree MemberLooks like you experienced the classic Thomas’s sales experience. My last point of call in ipswich.
MarkSSFree MemberI’ve a 2012 Croix de fer with SKS chromoplastic & 35c schwalbe marathon deluxe on shimano mt66 29er wheels.
The steerer of the forks continues into the fork arch by a couple of mm which doesn’t help with mudguard clearance.
I ended up melting a hole (using the cut off steerer chunk) & then heat reforming to aid clearance. Yes its weakened the front end but no major issues (been riding mud laden back roads) in 700miles .
MarkSSFree MemberAll done now. Prob some of the worst conditions I’ve ridden in all year. Ended up doing 8km laps & calculating on the fly how many times I needed to go around to complete.
Good luck to all those clocking up the final km in what’s left.
MarkSSFree MemberAll solo road miles(!) so far. 67km to go & about to brave the gale force winds.
Had an off Saturday night when i couldn’t see a curb alongside the road.
Fairly daft really…
MarkSSFree MemberMaverick?
can download via wireless at home free OS 1:50k & 1:25k map tiles for the area you need (by scrolling around)Uploaded Gps trail needs to be in a trk format – but plenty of apps on net for that.
MarkSSFree MemberNice one.
Yup that 1st set of slabs on the marsden descent has a hub sinker puddle immediately before the 1st slab. I fell victim end of October – OTB into the surrounding bog & counted my blessings for not landing on the slabs.
MarkSSFree MemberAnother newbie here looking to give TrainerRoad a spin 🙂

Which ANT+ stick are you using? The ones recommended by Trainerroad are 40+ quid, but then I found this one on ebay for 25€ shipped, which, from what I can work out, is the same thing as the one on amazon. Both have part number 010-01058-00.edit: The amazon photo is incorrect, you just get the small one according to the reviews.
Does it depend upon what Garmin cadence sensor & HRM you have? Mine is what came with a Garmin 500 kit.
So would the above ANT stick work with Garmin 500 sensors?
MarkSSFree Memberyou’re clearly not thinking outside the box…
hire a roof box and put all the family guff in that, bike in the car.
MarkSSFree Memberwe were up there may bank holiday just gone – did the Grizedale loop from the vertebrate book which was essentially (based on the ridethelakes linky above) Parkamoor, Nibthwaite downs, alpe d’huez, fell road, climbed upto Breasty Haw, red mist, cathderal, back o’ the tarn, babbies heids.
Will need to go back & door it again at some point as the Parkamoor descent down to Nibthwaite was full on mist until about half way down. Although in some ways this added to the excitement. If you want to pre-plan your ride lines over the rocky awesomeness I’ve popped a lazy edit of most of that descent on youtube
MarkSSFree Memberwebsite works fine for me.
ping doesn’t – most likely their firewall is not responding to icmp traffic. which isn’t unreasonable.
MarkSSFree Memberpipedream sirius or scion?
run my sirius with sektor 100-140mm uturn forks. not the lightest of set ups but works for me.
MarkSSFree MemberI run the free version of Maverick on my Wildfire S. You’ve the ability to download OS maps 1:50K & 1:25k either on the fly or at home using your wireless connection.
So when I know I’m going somewhere new I’ll just fire up the app at home and scroll around the area to download sufficient map tiles over my Wifi connection – you’ll need to do this for each zoom level. When you get to the ride location fire up the app and the GPS will show where you are no need for a mobile signal (assuming you’ve done the map tile predownload).
Obviously a paper map & compass are a worthy backup when you are really in the wilds.
MarkSSFree MemberLure some ducks in with the bread… and make some pate to go on the toast?
My Mrs ordered 15 granny smith apples from Tesco’s online once failing to realise they were bags of apples 🙂
MarkSSFree Memberit’s a *for up to 50%* discount.
Scandal 29ers are *supposed to be* £299ish
Code brings all colours/all sizes down to £149ish
MarkSSFree Memberordered a pair Sun morning 0800ish
just received an email from CRC saying fulfillment issue, on back order, you’ve been refunded & here is a £5 goodwill e-voucher off your next order. 🙁
MarkSSFree MemberI brought a satmap last yr for OS maps as I want to plan/follow off rd routes in middle of nowhere. Besides I didn’t have a road bike so a garmin 800 & all the add ons would have been OTT.
This yr I brought a road bike… & a garmin 500 cause I wanted to see how I was getting on.
Still use both & glad I’ve got them.
Satmap to strava – I have to upload file to pc then manually upload it to strava. Might seem a fag but its quicker than waiting for strava to recognise 7months worth of data on the garmin.
I guess its depends what you are going to use it for now; in 6 months; a yrs time etc when you’ve got board of strava
MarkSSFree Membermaverick – provides you with OS 1:50K & 1:25K maps. Ideally you can cache these before you leave home over your Wireless LAN connection – so you’re not reliant on data connection.
Never used it for tracking my ride but have loaded a known route – mines got Dunwich Dynamo loaded which hasn’t really slowed it down.
MarkSSFree MemberTimely – spotted yesterday my ardents had gone like this after 11 months. I put it down to running tubeless at lowish pressure on crest rims.
MarkSSFree MemberDepends what you are after…
Another one not mentioned so far- Jackson sports – quick & keen prices
Given I’m on the mailing list of at least a good handful of outdoor stores I don’t get any crc like emails offering say £10 of a £75 spend
MarkSSFree Member+1 on the picture – can’t of ended very nicely 🙂
I assume that’s the “step” on Roych Clough?
MarkSSFree MemberI would be interested in a Gecko lightset mounting kit & 1.2m battery
extension lead.Although I suspect you need 3 or 4 orders to reduce the $12AUD postage sufficiently to justify the onward UK postage from yours. e.g if its >25mm and becomes 2nd class Royal Mail packet that’s £2.20 upto 750g
My email addy is in my profile which is probably the best way to get hold of me when finalising an order.
MarkSSFree MemberI’ve got a Cateye TL-Rapid 3.
It’s so bright all my ride buddies don’t like riding behind me!
MarkSSFree Membera friend had this shipped in from Jenson USA.
VAT & Duty was a further £60
allows the bike to be attached by the front wheel & then the bike is swung into place (moving around the now fixed front wheel)
MarkSSFree MemberI brought a pair, a couple of weeks ago, as my 1st pair of road shoes along with some 105 pedals. Went for a wide fitting rather than normal width.
Done about 220miles in them (including Dunwich Dynamo 115miles) and very pleased with them from both a comfort & bang for buck viewpoint. Found quite a difference power wise as well compared to an old pair of touring shoes & spd pedals.
If you can get to Decthalon to try them out thats a stonking price.
MarkSSFree Memberthe Mrs has gone down this route.
Most (if not all) of the Carol Vordermann detox based books are wheat/dairy free. The lacofree longlife milk seems to be pick of the bunch of all the milk substitutes she has tried & I’ve had to use in an emergency 🙂
When she’s not looking I’m also partial to her Manchego (sheep milk based) cheese.
MarkSSFree Member1st time for me too – riding back home to Suffolk so it would be rude not to give it a go.
Darsham & Saxmundham are your closest train stations & yes likely to be rammed. Getting back to Ipswich will give you other train options with guards vans.
Will have my TROG shirt on… although there could be a few of us.
MarkSSFree MemberAs a road newbie I’ve just been through this process.. went for a Felt Z85 in the end. Used the British Cycling membership Wiggle store plus one of Wiggle’s 10% off 2012 bikes they were running the other week – which brought it in a fraction over £700..
MarkSSFree MemberI’ve had endomondo straight line before when the battery has reduced and its gone into power save mode.
out of interest on Friday I went out with Strava running on a HTC Wildfire S in a jersey pocket and a Garmin 500 on the stem. Uploaded both trails up to Strava. Only went through one Strava segment and the Garmin was 2 seconds quicker compared to the phone app.
So now only bothing with the Garmin 500 🙂
MarkSSFree MemberI’ve only done it once – end of June last year. Just spotted a weather window and went for it. Overnighted in the YHA at Truleigh Hill – which made the 1st day quite long given I had to ride from my house to the Train station then across London between terminal stations.
Crammed enough stuff in a large Ortleib seat pack and 18L Camelbak for the jaunt.
Bike Hard tail – inbred set up 1×9
Saddle sore – yes needed some cream on 2nd day – should have applied it in the beginning.MarkSSFree MemberNo probs thanks for the offers.
Had a grand ride on my tod – shooters nab, goat track, black moss resi, castleshaw resi, dowry road, packhorse rd back into marsden.
Bit snow drifty on the tops but no big deal to push thru them.
MarkSSFree MemberHi mintimperial I could be at riverhead brewery for 1030 if that is not too late?
MarkSSFree MemberThanks Chris – I’ve peaceful together a ride based on passed stw marsden ride posts. Ridden meltham/wessenden/marsden before so looking at other options.
MarkSSFree MemberMT loop and South section I got from gpsies.com
http://www.gpsies.com/map.do?fileId=lnoepoxrqwkievsxTrying to remember where I acquired the North Section from…
MarkSSFree MemberTonto – I’ve got this on my todo list for this year.
Current plans and they are just plans are:
Day 1
—–
Arrive Kirkby Stephen on Train 1430ish
Kirkby Stephem Train Station to start 3.8miles
Kirby Stephen – Clapham cum Newby 4019ft 31miles
Clapham cum Newby to Ingleton YHA 5miles
Total 39.8miles 4019ft +tailsDay 2
—–
Ingleton YHA to Clapham cum Newby 5miles
Clapham cum Newby to end of north section 5311ft 50.7miles
Start of MT loop – Mankinholes YHA 2115ft 12.9miles
Total 68.6miles 7426ftDay 3
—–
Mankinholes YHA – Start of South section 649ft 3.59miles
Start of South Section – Middleton 7218ft 65.5miles
Total 69.09miles 7867ftDistances & climbing assumes GPX’s I’ve acquired are reasonably accurate. Mileage also excludes Middelton to Railway network or parked car.
Day’s 2 & 3 seem comparable distance-wise to day 1 of the SDW I did last year (Winchester – Truleigh Hill YHA). The bit I’m trying to work out at the moment is casting my mind back to completing the SDW last year – could I have gone to bed and woke up the next morning and done another 70miles & 7867ft the next day!
MarkSSFree MemberI had a second-hand Nevegal & Blue Groove off ebay. Took a while to seal up on Stans Crest rims – sidewalls leaked a bit so needed plenty of re-inflation and shaking them. Once sealed up I didn’t need to re-top them up for the 6 months they were on the rims.
Sidewall strength – dunno – survived 8 rocky day rides in North & South Wales.
MarkSSFree MemberOn my 26ers….
68mm BB shell – 2 spacers drive side & 1 on non drive side
72mm BB shell – only 1 spacer drive side.not sure if the above also works for 29ers.
MarkSSFree MemberI’ve been thinking of something similar and was going to break for a ride in Gisburn on the way up and an overnight stop/ride @ Dales Bike Centre on the way back.
