Heres another thought, could a dropper post have a some degree of travel engineered into it. Say 5mm of sag dropping another say for the sake of argument 20mm under full compression? And then have 100mm or whatever dropper capability. I know it probably sounds like the knackered dropper you chucked in the corner of the shed…but I think it sounds like hardtail seat post heaven.

I’ve got some Marta SL’s of that vintage and they were brilliant brakes very light and powerful, lovely shaped carbon levers. But they leaked like a sieve.
Still have them in the shed and occasionally think about getting them serviced/refurbished, although that might not be possible now…

If you take the gravel bike, the canal that leads up to Cwmcarn is not far from where you are staying, you could jump onto the towpath (mainly tarmac though) and head up the valley to Cwmcarn trail centre where there loads of fireroads to go at and a decent cafe to.

We loved our Yeti but the boot is small. Moved on to a Mazda3, much bigger boot, nicer drive and bullet proof build quality. Cx5 didn’t seem worth the extra fuel costs for the bit more space it would have given us tbh.

I know what the op is coming from. My lad was doing D/H racing going back ten years or so and it was expensive then. And its not just the race entry cost is it. Food, fuel, camping equipment (camper van if you’ve got the money) The bike. Repairing the bike. We did Fort Bill on the cheap and as I say this was ten years back and through £500 easily for the weekend and that was doing all our own spanner work. I’m not moaning here, we had a lot of fun and would do it all again at the drop of a hat.

Used to be called weekend meters. Basically (and it only works if the meter is fitted internally & not a smart meter) but you have two meters, the official one that you make sure is in place for the meter reader when they call and the other one that he/she never see’s. Called w/e meters because if you didn’t want to attract attention you only had it in place over the w/e so you recorded a reasonable amount of gas consumption and meter readers didn’t normally call at the w/e…

Trailrider, I was going to start in Ceiriog, do the Pandy descent then the Lawnt. Over to the Pheasant track descent, finishing withe Chute back into Ceiriog. Its been a year or two since I was last in the area riding, just keeping my fingers crossed no other trails have had maintenance work carried out on them.

Check the spacers mine were in the wrong way around and there wasn’t a hint of grease in the bearings either…

I’ve got an old v70 with the 2.4 5cylinder engine in it. Its just gone past 107,000 miles and it still runs nicely and sounds great. It is very comfortable and you can get a shed load in the back which makes for an ideal mtb car imho. Throttle bodies are a weak point I’ve had experience with but you can them reconditioned so not to expensive to sort. Eats front tyres and I seem to spend a lot of time replacing bits of suspension and other bits that keep the wheels rolling or stoping them from rolling but it is 20 years old. Mid 30’s mpg on a run, I try not use it in town… 😉

Since the final year that sleepless in the saddle was at Trentham gardens whenever that was..Collected lots of scars along the way but still more or less intact 😉

Going quickly downhill on gravel bike on trails that are on the cusp of being of being to technical for gravel bikes. Its a very specific discipline granted.

My son had a bi turbo 1.6. Injectors went under warranty early on, nearly 2 months before he got it back. Then about a year later it packed up again, still under warranty but they claimed it was bad fuel that had caused the issue and quoted him 4-5k to repair the engine. Independent fuel test proved the fuel was fine and after 6 weeks they caved in and fixed it. Otherwise he loved the van but got rid of it as soon as it was fixed.

I always think of Archer* now when watching any Bond film which does undermine the premiss of the character except the David Niven one…
