    The advice here is sound….

My viva was tough but all in all they are marking you on your work to make sure its yours….. You of all people should know your thesis (as it takes so freaking long to write)so you shouldnt have anything to worry about. The external examiner even said that one of my chapters ‘was the dogs dinner’ but didnt suggest any corrections!

The single best piece of advice… dont bullshit. If you dont know – say it…..

Like above – if your supervisor is any good you wont get put forward for the viva unless you will pass. But a death in the family puts it all into perspective – my mother was rather ill and died 3 weeks after my viva.

Good luck and remember the viva is all about joining a club…. once the viva is over you will have the same qualifications as the examiners!

I carpeted mine – was chucking out some carpet when I put a wood floor down. Carpet went to the garage and now its warmer and soaks up oil grime etc…… additional benefit of vacuumable and saves going to the tip….. off cuts are also cheaper than sealing/painting!

Used to live in Melbourne and met a few girls who were roadies (one of them got me into biking) – but still more blokies riding around!!!…… if you fancy giving the internet dating thingy malarky – i used rsvp.com.au and that had only a smattering of weirdos!

Good luck – on the brightside you do have The Great Ocean Road on your doorstep!

Thanks for the advice…… looking on youtube Lee Quarry looks pretty flowing singletrack and with Gisburns new trails opening soon that could also be worth a punt. Is this a good weekends worth of ride?

I put down t&g 15mm oak flooring – admittedly it was on concrete and then on to insulation but found the following.

First couple are the most important – take time as these are the most important. EVERYTHING is governed by these. Dont forget to think about the direction of the panels – i would place them along the longest wall or the focal point of the hallway
I would imagine that 15mm ply would be good enough but depends on how wide apart the joists are
Leave a 10-15mm gap around the outside and cover with skirting boards. I didnt use any nails and wouldnt advise to – I just used a tool (sorry dont know the name – large piece of metal on a sliding bar – placed against edge of board and then slammed the metal against it and it compressed all the gaps), used silicon sealant for the decorative bits on the end.

good quality saw is a must! good luck

I have to agree with Muly – I have a 2010 XC8. Excellent bike – just had to change the bottom bearing on the headset and the mech hanger. Not too shabby for 2 year old bike :)

chief – fair point. My legs are hurting by the end of the ride but my ability to talk to my biking buddies is severely diminished – so maybe this is just a long cardio workout….

I will decrease my rear cog and see how it goes. If this is a lot of pain I will curse you Chief! ;)

There is only one thing that can describe this: you are awesome

well I know that… just wondering if others have found Singlespeeding painfull during the ride but ok afterwards….. or do I need to revert back to a geared bike!

Someone had risers and bar ends on their bike.
If Woburn had a look, that’ll be it.

That would be me sir….. i’ll stop going and try and resume some credibility in another sport!

Without sounding toooooooo nerdy – Al will oxidise more readily that almost any other metal – even at very low partial pressures of O2 (in a vacuum for instance). However, unlike steel, Al will oxidise using parabolic kinetics rather then linear(ish) kinetics for Fe based alloys (with low Cr content).

Another pointless fact is that Ti (and its alloys) has one of the highest specific strengths (strength against density) of any element/alloy

Right – ill get me coat!

It could be corrosion but do you have any pictures?

If its a large hardtail with sliding drop outs then its about to fail any second and you need to pass it to your local STW friendly metallurgist :)

If you are swimming i.e moving through the water head first, the water from the shower will be replaced/diluted from that in the pool in a matter on seconds/minutes. Water from the shower will not have a greater affinity for someones hair over chlorinated water.

We bought a side board from them which I drilled the back out of to make a TV/video cabinet and keep little hands from getting to the PS3….. first class workmanship and the wood thickness was impressive. Would shop with them again!

Brant – I am just very frustrated… i bought from your guys as you said you were in stock and the reverbs were on sale….. by the time I found out you werent in stock all the other cheap reverbs were sold from other sites.

    marko75

They did that to me too…. ordered when they had a few reverbs in stock…. got the confirmation order to say they were awaiting restocking!….. Wrote them an email asking why the confusion over in stock and out of stock – it took them a week to get back to me saying that they were busy and that the reverbs were out of stock….. shitty customer service and will never shop with them again!

Can I join?….. just weighed myself this morning after realising that trouser sizes are going up even though I have bought ‘stretchy waistbands! – now 93.5kg (14.7stone) and 6ft…..would love to drop below 85kgs but will aim for 87.5 first.

Bike prepped for my first commute tomorrow (a whole 3 miles!)……

A pressie of a 29er sounds lovely – great idea!

    Good luck chaps and chapesses!

Congrats… now have some time off before looking at it all again for the viva! There are normally a few corrections so you might as well get a copy once its been formally accepted!

Handing in is a let down and so is the viva – you hype it up internally and then when its over you think ‘ Is this it?’. Dont worry about the viva its just a chat to join the club – remember the most important answer is “I am sorry Prof but I dont know!’ I used it more than once – dont try and bulls*** your way through or it will last 6 hours rather than the normal 2-3 hours!

    Enjoy beer and riding :)

There are so many different types of steel from austinitic, ferritic, duplex etc – Youngs modulus as mentioned earlier is a large part but this can vary depending on grain size, heat treatment regime, alloy composition etc…. 6mm by 75mm isnt that big – you could do the maths using beam theory!
