@bencooper thank you oh so much for making me have a good laugh at your expense. Classic 😆

OP, if you can beg/borrow some knee pads would be my advice as knees tend to take the brunt of it when you fail/forget to unclip.

Welcome back. Can’t you just get then to forward on your old passport?

Aint it terrible who our immigration lets in these days… 😀

No sign of the old passport yet? At least if you know it has been found and returned that you know where it is.

I am not so sure that the risk is that small.

Cyclewise recently suffered. Even if it is nailed down it seems they will have it.
Bike nicked from cycle rack outside Morrisons, staff never used it due to volume of thefts but a customer was not aware of this
Recent posting, last few weeks as I recall, of another bike being taken from roof rack.
Degla seems to suffer more than its fair share of walk/drive offs of bikes.

Yeah you could be lucky and get away with it but how many bikes were found in that poly tunnel in the New Forest recently. Maybe there should be much better/more obvious warning signs at trail centres so as to raise awareness and remind people of the risk.

    Edit:
I would add that there have been some good news stories as well where people have been reunited with their trusty steed. Lets hope that this does turn out to be one of these as well. 🙂

@Hora, yes agree totally it takes a couple of nano seconds and it is gone. My current vehicle, and last few, have integral roof bars so I have locked to this previously. The roof carrier was of the type you could lock through, not just round, the carrier itself. I now use a Thule 3 bike tow bar mounted and lock to the substantial frame of this. Saying that I am nervous as hell when doing this and the bike is out of my sight for no longer that a few minutes. I certainly do not leave it for any length of time while I go in for a drink or bite to eat. The only exception to that is if I can clearly see the bike from where I am sat. I would hate to lose any of my bikes.

Sorry to hear of the loss. I agree with other comments that that roof racks and rear racks are not secure places to leave the bike unattended. Back of the car / van is so much better. If I do have to leave mine for a few mins, and I mean a few not 20 or 30, then I cable and D lock to a secure part of the rack and or roof rails of the car.

I have had some very old Panaracers do the same when I tried to make them tubeless. More solution in the tyre and then rest the wheel on top of a bucket so the solution can pool round the side wall. 20 mins each side worked for for the Panaracer.

I had a similar issue on a cross trainer and after much striping down found that it was the axle that was shearing off on one end. Think of it as the bottom bracket shearing. I binned it.

Thanks so much for the advice guys, il get a chain link tool tomorrow as well as a powerlink and a few extra links

Just make sure you get the right speed (8/9/10). There are differing links depending on how many gears you have on the cassette on the back wheel.

If not what new chain shall I buy?

Be careful of just fitting a new chain. If the old chain is badly worn (stretched) then so will the cassette and chain rings. This means that a new chain will most likely slip as it will not engage properly with the now worn teeth.

sometimes when it shear you can get a small screwdriver down in the hole and turn against the sheared edge.

Be cautious as it may be a scam and they are fishing for your details… I can see it now you protesting your innoncence saying that you are not who they are looking for and then being drawn into a “well who are you” conversation.

Another couple of thoughts. How good is the car battery/ciggy socket connection. It may be that you are getting a voltage drop due to an ageing battery or poor ciggy socket connection. This will have a noticeable impact on the performance. Having the engine running, to warm the car up ready for you, will help when using the dirt worker or any variant. The alternator will be putting out about 13.6 volts so as to charge the battery.

Std WD40 is not meant for lubricating chains. It is meant to disperse water. WD40 have moved in to the chain lube market I believe but I have not used the WD40 chain lube. Edit: I see that you are using the pucker stuff.

Chain life will depend on more than just the lube used. Where, conditions, maintenance etc will all play a part in the life of the chain. How long is a piece of string?

Have you checked the filter that is in side the water chamber. I have found that over time and if water left in the Dirtworker you can get slime etc on the filter. This will slow down the flow rate and reduce the cleaning ability.

I regularly retreat my waterproof jackets with tent reproofing solution. The shoes have been know to be treated as well. Works a treat for me. Detergent is your worst enemy for waterproof stuff. The surfactants used to get the dirt to release from the surface also do a great job of keeping the water proofing off.

There is no way I not of improving breath ability of any given material unless you cut more vents in. You can spend a small fortune on a “breath able” water proof and still suffer boil in the bag issues.

Good MTB specific insurance. Basic holiday insurance may not cover you.
    Brake pads,
Dual ply wide tyres. I have got away with single ply 2.35 rollers on 2 trips.
    DH tubes or tubeless.
    spare Mech hanger.
Most stuff is available out there but it is not as cheap as here.
    Sun cream
First aid kit. don’t rely on others to patch your holes.
take it easy for the first couple of days to get used to it. No point breaking yourself/the bike on the first day.

If you need to change the 5 to disperse some Gremlins then that is fine. The Heckler is a good bike. I have ridden a 5 and a Heckler. I hated the 5 but love the Heckler. Get out on some demos though before you part with any cash. My Heckler climbs great but it has a coil shock not air.

What concerns me is the frequency that you seem to have been breaking mech hangers. Touch wood I have not broken one on any of my bikes in numerous years. A mate rides an Orange and he has not broken any either. So I would be looking at what may be wrong with the set up/care/storage etc that has caused so many hangers to fail.

Sorry to hear about you off. Heal well and soon.

“If complete segregation from trams isn’t offered then it will be possible for people to cycle in the same space as the trams. Given the schedule, there will be large gaps between approaching trams and it should be fairly obvious when a tram is around because of the bells they carry.

If the tracks do not give it away first that is…

Having seen the tracks I did wonder when this would be an issue. Mind you they have been building it for long enough so it is not like it sprung up over night. While I sympathise for those that have fallen off I do not believe that they should be able to claim. What happens if they decide to ride into some other street furniture such as lamp posts or signs and fall off because they did not see it. Yeah it is a wheel trap if you ride down it and not across it but you do not need to be the sharpest knife in the drawer to work that out.

I agree with you that Morrisons should have put in better security given that their own staff have had bikes nicked from there. I know that they will accept not responsibility and all that but they should be doing a bit more for their customers. What lock was it, cable or D lock?

Good luck on getting it back and keep an eye out on thiefbay etc.

They do work. I have some on my old hardtail with ghetto tubeless. What I would say id they are quite porous so yo will need plenty of latex solution in the tyre to seal them.

Not your insurance but theirs that needs to be worried about. Unless you reverse into a wall/bollard etc then it will be your insurance that may help you out if fully comp.

There was a view that using CO2 cartridges was the cause of these but I have seen them when not using CO2 as well so it cant be that.

Sorry but I do not care how gobby he may have been. I reckon that this is irresponsible. There should have been some very basic coaching given after the first/second off by the cameraman. Not how to change gears but getting up off the seat in the attack position and moving his weight about the bike etc. It is plain to see the guy does not have a clue. If he was still struggling then an offer/suggestion should have been made that he walk back up or down the trail or find a bail out point.

The video of the first few bends/off would have been evidence he was all mouth and no trousers so why the need to continue to let it happen. It could have been that if he had enjoyed it he may have come back and been more understanding/tolerable.

How can we moan about how drivers treat us when on the road etc and then allow this to happen. Sorry double standards I reckon.

Gets some pasta loading done now. I seem to recall that it takes a few days to get the benefit so that may help for the weekend. You could go at the front and set the pace of your choice. Next time get some riding in in the build up to going away and you will probably have more fun/less pain.

Great news to have got it back. Yeah it sucks for the “middle man” but we may have discussed “buyer beware” a few time on here. With luck this can all be traced back and others brought to task. Moon on a stick I guess.

It has become an arms race with the brightness of lights. They now far exceed what is needed for a night ride. Maybe there should be retro night rides where you rock up with some old halogens and ride for the fun of it.

Kevin Evans and Dave George, one of South Africa’s top mountain biking duos, became proud health and wellness ambassadors of Nedgroup Life’s 360Life insurance solution in January 2011.

Above from the Nedgroup web site.

Is it just me or is that two health and wellness ambassadors that have been associated with cheating and drugs etc.
