Toaster springs to mind when I see them on the head..

Take a look at the Contour would be my advice and don’t just disregard it.

I have the contour 1080 and can not fault the quality of the footage taken so far. Not sure the GPS is a must have function mind you.

You do not need to have the powerlink but it is easier/quicker. Careful use of the chain breaker and you can push out and back in to make a join.

+1 on tube in to get the bead seated on a new tyre. Another way is to take the valve core out as this will restrict the flow a bit. I have found that it helps.

I used to use CO2 but always seems to get a smeg ball of latex so have stopped using them for the moment.

Sounds like a great plan but I will be heading back up from the south I am afraid. Have a good one though.

It is nice to see that Spooky is getting a bit of TLC. The new black section seems to be coming along well. I just hope it is at least as much fun as the old bit.

Yeah the guy at the back should not have been close enough to rear end her. But give him a break, If you are going to stop dead, not slow down for a technical section but stop dead, do it at the side of the trail. If you stop in the middle of the trail you should expect a problem or be causing one I reckon.

Anger management training is required and I reckon the guy at the back can give it. I would have lost it well before he moved on.

I carry a card with me that has my deatils, next of kin and numbers etc. But as has been said if anyone does find me at the side of the trail tend to the first aid issue first please. Thanks 🙂

Is the mech bent or the hanger?

Never had to straighten a mech but have done a few mech hangers before.

Not as far as I know, It will be redone but I guess it is time and funds that will be the deciding factor.

How much! I did my trance myself with a full set of Enduro "full compliment" bearings and it was no where near that cost.

If you do not fancy the Enduro set then get the numbers and look to a local bearing supplier. It will be so much cheaper than the Giant cost, no pun intended. It is not too bad a job to get them out and refit them.

Milton tabs here and also a baby teat cleaning brush for the bite valve. I avoid putting anything else but water in mine to reduce the risk of bugs due to the sugars etc.

I have just6 had to replace one. At first I thought that some dirt etc had go in and jammed it. Copious washing and flushing and no improvement. I have been able top strip down some Deore shifters before but the XT was more formidable so I gave up on it and got a new one. I think it may have been a knackered cable in the end.

Big to big plus 2 links works for me. I have never counted them. When it is all set up I double check that small to small works and the mech is able to take up the slack.

Think the Braking Bumps at Winny are bad you want to try the Red & Black runs at Les Gets hundreds of the fooking things

+1 There may be a few more than that….

May be a little less tiring with out them but hey it is part of the trail so ride it and take the rough with the smooth.

Tubeless for 2 years now and no issues. I can't see that the sun getting the air pressure up enough from 30psi to enable the tyre to blow. Is it possible that may be happening is the rim is getting warm enough to soften the rubber so that it slides a bit and then the pressure helps it along until it blows.

I have seen a tube escape from inside and under the bead before. I can only assume that it was partly burped off during the ride and then just finished itself off when left. That could also be a possibility here I guess.

£12 million is a pittance considering the billions the Olympics is going to cost or wanting to host the world cup.

Maybe but that still does not make it right.

Yep, I have chased down may a creak and squeak on my various bikes.

I guess the two areas I'd like to see improvements in are price, and battery technology (the output to weight ratio)

TBH I don't think we need further advances in actual light power. At the Gorrick last weekend the power output on the majority of rider's bikes was astounding compared to a few years back. I just don't see that we need more light.
+1 on that. Make them cheaper and last longer on the battery but no more light output required for MTB use.

That was my first thought but, they're Hollowtech II bearings… I'm still feeling my way with modern bike mechanics, but aren't they sealed units?

Yes they are but they do not last for ever and will last even less if you keep jet washing and hosing them down. Water gets in and the bearings will rust and wear out. Mind you I would not expect this to happen by the first 6 week service unless it had been abused or not set up correctly from day one. There is a pre-load that you apply to the bearings before doing up the cranks. If you over do this the life of the BB will be greatly reduced. How overdue was it for the free service?

I may be being dumb but the threads of the BB should not be moving as the should be done up tight. I can see the bearing being the issue as this moves but not the threads.

Seeing as it is since the shop I would run it back to them and ask them find it for you. If you start to go and find it you may get a warranty issue when you do find it.

Some hairy and horned highland cow appear out of the darkness one night when riding back home. It was just stood there on the trail and it did not move a muscle. It scared the living daylights out of me. It was docile enough fortunately. They had introduced them to help manage the heath land.

Not used or seen any of the Magicshine lights in use so cant comment. I would say though you should try and avoid halogen. They will not be bright enough and you will quickly wish you had got something else. From what I recall of my old Electron 5/10 you might as well hold a candle up, similar yellow light as well.

I think my first night ride was is 2000 with a 10W smart light set in Epping Forest. Its was like nothing I'd ever done before. These days, I barely differentiate night and day riding.

Same here. In fact I still think I have my old Electrons in the garage. You raise a good point about struggling to differentiate between night and day rides. I think that some of the lights today are just to powerful and bright. Why bother to do a night ride if your super high beam light makes it look like daylight. Much more fun to ride with enough light and get the thrill of the ride at night I reckon.

Put the wife/sig other in the shed and keep the bikes in the house. If anyone goes near the shed they will only do it once for sure..

Congrats BTW on getting your Heckler back, great bikes.

My Heckler is now a bit of a Heinz 57. It started as an 08 frame that was built up. Pikes on the front and DHX5 on the back. Great bike and I do every thing with from Stanes, lake district, local woods and Morzine. It broke it second swing arm pinch bolt in Morzine so I fitted the new style swing arm with no pinch bolts.

I know it doesn't really help you, but I got this from a mate for £50! Beats racks any day of the week!

No 3rd/4th lane of the motorway though…

Sorry to hear about the off but glad you sort of ok. It is always the way the super tech stuff you are fine and then you take your eye off the ball for the "easy bit" and wham you hit the deck.

Snowcard considered ski resorts to be level 4 and not level 2 when I insured with them. Most MTB cover I saw was level 2 cover as std and a lot cheaper unsurprisingly. Best check with the insurer would be my advice so that there are no "miss understandings" when you need them and get it in writing.

Mark, Tinto, where what route? I've looked everytime i pass, is it worth a drive from edinburgh?

Hi Kevonakona, I have only gone up from Thankerton and it is a straight up and down trail. It is tough climb/push and I missed the view from the top due low cloud . Mind you the run down is okay :D. I need to try the other routes out from Wiston and Symington as they look to be a bit more interesting.
