Disco brakes. Been to the Alps with them a couple of times and use them at home. no issues.

I was there on Sat morning and it was trying to snow but not coming to much. I reckon it will be no worse than it was last weekend. It was nice on the black, enough but no too much snow. There was a diversion on the Spooky wood climb BTW so you will need to go down Pennel Vennel and then get round to the push up. Diversion until 7th based on the signage.

Ctrl Alt & Del to bring up task manager and see what IO is actually going on. Is it really doing something or pulling your chain. Power Director user here as well and yes it can take a while depending on the file and what PC spec you have.

Joda that is my camp as well. If you want then go and get the fancy stuff but not sure that you ‘have to’.

A rag/cloth with WD40 or GT85 on it and wiped over the frame has always worked for me. I wash and dry and then wipe over with WD40. Just keep it clear of the discs for obvious reason.

Nikk, I agree that WUL has salt in it, most cleaners do I reckon. AFAIK it is there as a water softener so you get bubbles. I also agree that it has the ability to get into every nook and cranny as it will reduce the surface tension properties of water. I still remember that experiment at school. That is how cleaners work so they can lift the dirt off. Leave any untreated metal out side and it will corrode, washed in WUL or not. I was not suggesting that you leave the bike unrinsed.

Another thing that help with pressure is to have the engine running. So you can pre warm the car and get a bit more umph out of the DW.

    I will pull up a chair…

You ride your bike through lord knows what on the trails then it may go on the roof or back of the car and you drive home. I seriously doubt that anything that may be in good old washing up liquid is going to be any worse. especially with the amount of salt being chucked on the roads at this time of year.

Quick rinse to get the worst of and then bucket and brush to clean it down. there may be some car wash stuff in the bucket Dry it down, sort the chain and done. Every now and then the forks/shock will get a squirt of silicon spray.

Not one for lining the pockets of these “specialist cleaner firms”. The money feels better in my pocket. 😉

The chain gets cleaned with a Flash/water solution, rinsed and then re lubed. It works for me.

In short it means that you can order it for delivery but you will not be able to walk into the shop and buy it over the counter. I hope that helps.

Isn’t there the Glentress bus that ferries riders and bikes from Edinburgh to and from GT? Aviemore is worth the trip as well. I have stayed in the hostel and found it to be good, pub next door.

Not a young person so I do not ‘bounce’ like I used to. I do some road riding on the MTB but most of what I do is off road. I have had front wheel washouts, OTB moments but nothing serious fortunately. Like you I have knee/shin pads on and they have numerous scars on them. The smallest off, trip or fall can do some serious damage. I think it is just a case of how you fall and how lucky you are at the time.

Off road you often fall of into the undergrowth at the side of the trail. That thorn bush, although a pain to get out of softened your landing. You dont get many of those on the road.

    Hope he heals quickly.

Not tried the HR 2 but I can vouch for the HR working fine in 2.3 single ply. I cant see why the HR2 would not work for you.

+1 on MM Tracker. No maps with it so you will need the OS map files but it does work very well.

Yes MMtracker and a load of QCT files and it works a treat.

Paid for version here as well. For the cost I reckon the VFM is excellent. Being able to use all my old MM files is great and I do not need to have a data signal to see the map. So turning of the data function on the phone will extend the battery life as well.

That would have been a chilly dip 😡

Pushed in or lost control when being passed? Either way not nice, it is only a friendly race. Some people take it too seriously.

Cheers Chaps – I was a bit concerned about flying off the turbo and ending up in the wall.

If you do then do not forget the pictures.

This is a great use for an old or even current Argos catalogue. Works a treat on mine.

Does it only slip on the middle chain ring and largest cassette. Could it be the end stop screw not letting the mech move over far enough? Assuming other gears at the back all work fine that is where I would look for starters.

May be it is not the deer we should be concerned about…

I guess the trick of surviving the chase is to be quicker than the deer.

I have one of the Early Trances when the Maestro suspension first came out. If it is the same, I suspect it is then there are 5 sealed cartridge bearings involved. They are fairly easy to do yourself so long as the bearing has not completely collapsed then it is a bit more tricky. I for get the sizes but 2 of size A 2 of size B and then one big one for the seat post. I fond the first set to be very poor so fitted Enduro Max bearings. These have lasted better IME. Keep the jet wash away from them and that will help longevity.

Just focus on the trail ahead and riding it smoothly. If the bogey man does come out of the dark for you you will ride noticeably quicker IME 😀

I have had deer, cows and all sorts spook me on night rides. It is all part of the fun.

I have got away with Single ply in the alps and I have had failures in both single & dual ply. Take some tyre boots and repair kits. The rocks opened up the side wall on both types if you are unlucky. If you are going to change the tyre for the trip then fit a wider higher volume tyre than you run at home.

As has been said take pads with you as you will use a fair few. Our group varied from a set a day to 2 sets for the week. We had a mix of Hecklers with Pikes, Comencal 55? and Giant reign. The Giant was quickest down but the rest were not far behind.

    Have fun 😉

    I have one of these:

    This looks similar:
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=34775
And is cheaper than the Panracer kit was.

A bit of vaseline on the valve core stops it getting clogged and a small nip up with pliers keeps it secure. I have that T shirt as well but it happened at home.

A Leatherman or similar is a great trail side tool to have in the Camelbak.

I have both across my bikes but will be going full tubeless. Not sure what the mess is, maybe some are more cack handed than me. I have my home brew sealant in an icing bottle and just squirt it in through the core less valve. No mess or commotion.

I have on one occasion managed to split the tyre enough that the sealant will not get me home. When this happened I just put a tube in and got on with it. I know that I have ‘punctured’ and the sealant has done its job a treat. At worst I have had to put a bit more air in the tyre to get home. No special UST or tubeless tyre here either. I fit single ply Hi rollers and leave em on till they are worn out. And believe me they are well worn by the time I take them off.

Yeah I have a small compressor at home and it works a treat with soapy water. I can’t be bothered with trying the track pump although it probably would work. I may one day try the pikey inflater just for a laugh.

I know that some have struggled to get tubeless to work for them due to various reasons. All I can say is that it has worked okay for me.

Search will be your friend as this comes up numerous times. You will also find some training tips for the turbo as well to help avoid the boredom.

I have the Elite Volaire Mag Elasto Gel and like it. I got mine from Decathlon for £99 I think it was. Not sure if they are still in store or not.

Was it not bikers who built some illegal trail through badger sets and cut down tress not so long ago. Different strokes for different folks.

I saw bikes heading up the Pentlands at the weekend. With the rain we have had that must be as boggy if not more than the Surrey hills. It will be difficult to stop it I am afraid even though the trails do get cut up and end up 6ft plus wide. Swinley is a good example of this and last time I saw BKB it was not a patch on what it used to be.
