  • Interview: Atherton Bikes at Bespoked
  • I’ve just landed a job darn’sarf so will be looking to rent out our house in Sale in the next couple of months, with a view to selling it in the middle of next year.

It’s a 2 bed semi-detached on a decent road that’s 10 mins walk to the metro link or 5 mins drive to the M60.

However, this being STW, the most important aspects of the house are:

    1) Room for 3 bikes in the cupboard under the stairs, plus kit bags etc
    2) Shed in back garden for bike parts, frames and general gubbins (never had problems with she’d break-ins etc)
    3) Engineered oak flooring in the dining room that is easy to clean bike oil, brake fluid and fork oil etc
    4) Travel at a sensible time and you can be in Staveley in the lakes in an hour, same for Llandegla, and even less time to get to the Peaks.

Email in profile if its any good for you. I’d rather rent it out to a STW’er and not bother using agents if possible.

Edit – just read that you don’t drive, so ignore point 4, but you can easily get to Chorlton, Fallowfield etc then onto sportcity by bike.

Bunny hop is correct. Blood clot rather than traditional gummed up arteries and valves…

    Yes, I’d say so.

Traditional procurement of using architectural / surveying professionals is on the demise, whereas contractor led procurement is increasing in popularity, and is where PM’s are in demand.

I’m a chartered building surveyor, and was able to gain full (MAPM) membership of the Association of Project Management through the experience route, without having to take the Practitioner qualification – just provide details of projects you’ve run over the last 5 yrs. maybe you could do the same?

As long as you’ve got a decent technical background, and have good interpersonal skills, you’ll already have a head start on most academic PM’s 😆

PS- I’ve just jacked my job in and my employers want to find a replacement. Where are you based?

Simons brother has this evening reported that he’s moving wards again for infection control purposes. He is still sedated but his breathing is improving, although he’s not yet off the ventilator.

He’s still got a long way to go, but ‘stubborn Simon’ is hanging in there.

Houns – I know that Simon will be reading this thread in a few weeks, and will no doubt in the first instance be overwhelmed by the messages of support, but will then feel depressed as he thought he’d previously managed to upset, antagonise and generally deter the entire online community, just because he can 🙂

I met him in person before experiencing him online, and its no coincidence that me, and everybody else who meets him this way, realise what an outstanding, admirable person he is, before sitting back with a wry smile watching him argue his way through thread after thread, playing with those who bite like a cat with a piece of string. 😆

Simon is very fit for his age, and his heart attack was caused by a blood clot rather than furred arteries etc, which the doctors saw as a positive situation.

The next 24hrs will be crucial as they bring him round and assess for other issues / side affects associated with heart failure. We’ll post more details as soon as possible and with the agreement of his immediate family.

The sheer volume of the messages in this thread will mean a great deal to his family, and the praise for the members who administered CPR before the first responders arrived on the scene are a great comfort. Without their intervention, this would have been a very different thread altogether.

I grew up in Bournemouth before moving to the industrial wasteland also known as The North when I was 14. I had fond memories of growing up there, and although the riding isn’t a patch on other areas of the UK, there’s plenty of riding within an hour, and being close to great sandy beaches was fantastic.

Depending how tomorrow mornings job interview goes, the family and I will be moving back to the area very soon 😀

I joined a night ride with the Dorset Rough Riders about a month ago and found them to be a friendly, welcoming bunch and the riding over the heathland near Colehill, Verwood, Ringwood forest etc was nice, albeit different (flatter) to what I’m used to!

I ordered 15 Ipads complete with Otterbox cases a year ago for use by colleagues out on site most days. 1 year in and we havent had one single damaged Ipad. Very tough case, would recommend.

Not a domestic bodge, but a problem I discovered today during a site visit to a school where various different pieces of work have been undertaken during the holidays, which included overlaying the existing tarmac to the playground and courtyards, and replacing the boxing-in to some services bridges containing heating pipes etc that run across the courtyards..

Unfortunately the contractor neglected to realise that by slightly increasing the height of the tarmac, and slightly increasing the depth of the bespoke boxing in, he was no longer able to get the mini-excavator back out of the courtyard 😀

Mud shark – you mean Chadwick House.

Decent facilities for bike commuters these days, but still a seriously boring place to work.

    I’m in 😀

Setting off 5 mins after you Samcamsdad.

    Sun tan lotion packed!

Top Of the 601 Trail – Ecky Thump in this shot.

The hire bikes can take a battering.

Luca’s bike shuttle (Bike Shuttle Torbole)

    The Altissimo refuge

I’ve driven it twice in the last 2 years, most recently at the start of May this year.

It’s a good 11-12hrs solid driving from Calais, and i think the easiest routes are either heading up the French coast into Belgium, then south past Brussels, into Germany and straight down past Stutgart, Ulm etc into Austria, over the Brenner Pass, through Into Italy and all the way down to Verona before cutting in towards the south of the lake. Very few tolls on this route (only a few euros in Italy plus the tax in Austria.

The quickest route was Calais, Reimes, Metz, then snake down through Luxembourg heading for Milan then over to Garda. Tolls here through France and bits of Luxembourg plus tax in Switzerland (about 40 Euros)

The most scenic route was Milan, Chamonix and up through France, but this was the most costly due to Mt Blanc tunnel.

There’s barely an hours difference between any of the above tbh.

We had another fantastic weeks riding in the mountains at the northern end of the lake. Plenty of places to hire bikes if your not taking your own, and loads of shuttle companies.

Brilliant, this gives me the perfect excuse to reel off one of my favourite yet slightly lame jokes:

‘What does a bottle of Budweiser and a couple having sex in the berth of a yacht have in common’?

‘They’re both f*cking close to water’

    IGMC

Seen my pics of Garburn from today? 😯

Nice one Fay! Pitchforks at the ready.

Really sorry to have heard this Fay. I’ll keep an eye out around south Mancs. Between STW and all the members of the bogtrotters and the other clubs that have shared the photos, there’s a good chance somebody will spot them somewhere.

PS – I bet the only thing worse than having your bikes nicked is finding out that so many of your mates are STW’ers 🙄

Contact Adrian (Nasher) at riviera bike, im sure he’d welcome an extra guest for a day – has hire bikes too.

I’ve got a 3 door and occasionally use Thule bars. The front bar fits easily by clamping under the roof shell when you open the doors. The rear is a bit of a faff to fit as you have to fold down the window rubber seal, but once you’ve found the right spot on the roof to get it properly seated they are secure. I have seen the same set up done incorrectly with the rear feet just relying on the power of gravity to keep in contact with the car 😯

Have a word with Rick at NWMTB as (I think) when his bikes were stolen earlier this year the police actually recovered them and uncovered other stolen bikes too. May be a link.

Worst: losing my dad in July and also my best friends wife in December, both to cancer.

Best 1: hearing my 15 month old daughter say ‘daddy’ for the first time.

Best 2: seeing my mum pick herself up so soon after losing dad and go and work as a games maker at the Paralympics.

Condensation. How do you know it’s not happening on the days you don’t go up there? Vent your house more, leave window trickle vents open / ajar, keep heating on. Oh, insulate the topside of loft hatch too.

    Temple of Convenience

I’ve just emailed you a shameless plug for the HR consultancy that my wife has recently set up. We’re fairly local to you too.

If you go a bit further on to Jct 40 there’s a Cumbrian produce farmers market type supermarket with a cafe upstairs. Just past the petrol station by the mini roundabout on the way into Penrith. Decent scrambled eggs there. 😀

Good but predictably expensive – £4 for a bacon roll.

Difficult to say without seeing a picture, but you could probably use a Helifix repair – chase a groove through the lintel, insert stainless steel bar and fill with colour matched mortar / resin. You can also run Helifix bars through the stonework above, effectively making the stone into an additional lintel.

A mate of mine had a 2 bike rack on his Boxter – two L – shaped steel pipes attached to a bracket that bolts to the subframe, flexy as hell. Oh, it cost £800 😆

I lost my dad to cancer 3 months ago at the age of 62. He was diagnosed with stomach cancer but it had already spread to his lungs and kidneys, and he passed away just a month after his diagnosis. It really is a vile, indiscriminate ****t of a disease. Marie Curie & Macmillan were both tremendous support.

Best of luck to anybody out there affected by cancer right now.

Try Carpentaris bike shop in Torbole, they have a range of cube bikes. They can also sort out places on the local bike shuttle uplift service (luca’s bike shuttle)

Most people start by riding down from Mt Tremalzo which is a stunning 2hr+ descent all the way back down to Riva. Other good trails are the Skull trail, Coast trail and I think there was one the locals called the snake.

If you are feeling adventurous, you could do a full run of the 601 track but it’s a bit full on in places!

Send me an email and I may be able to help. Email in profile.

Papa Lazarou / Coyote, I can confirm that Chadwick house no longer has the paternoster lifts 🙁

I have a brand new unused set of Marzocchi rc3 ti (2010) that I’m looking to sell if your interested. As mentioned above they are super plush.

    Sometimes.

So come on then, what have the yoot done? Pished through your letterbox??

A mate of mine made a pizza oven positioned on the rear wall of his house and during its first proper run he felt something drip on his head – he looked up and his plastic gutter and fascia had melted 😆

You can easily get from South Mancs (sale/ chorlton / didsbury etc) using the TPT to Urmston, then Flixton, Irlam Locks, cycle lane next to A57, take Dam Lane in Glazebrook across the Moss in to the megalopolis that is Birchwood. That’s my commute, usually done twice a week, originally on a SS genesis io, nowadays on a Kona Sutra borrowed from Plumber ( 5 mins quicker on cx bike).

You didn’t say whereabouts in Warrington you’re heading too, but you can alter this route to work for you.

Be careful when tackling roundabouts in Warrington in the mornings – most of the locals have had that part of their brain removed that governs their ability to give way to bikes approaching from the right.

Grantus, you have my deepest condolences. I lost my father three weeks ago to the same form of cancer – he was diagnosed on the 13th June and sadly it had already spread to his liver, lungs and lymph nodes. He passed away a month later.

I’ve no useful advice other than to suggest what aka_Gilo says sounds sensible. I hope everything goes as well as it can do during this difficult time.

    Email sent 😀

Slight hijack – eckythump, have you got a doctors note yet? I’ve overlooked this, and plumber is also struggling. I was thinking of asking Adam to write one for me, seeing as he is a doctor. (albeit, a doctor of chemistry 😆 )

Good call on the insurance too.

Torbole at the top of the lake is the bikey end. Loads of trails around there. Lucas’s bike shuttle is a local uplift service.

    Enjoy. Awesome place.

    Beaten me to it Andy!
