So the tests are there to clobber parents of less able kids? Wow what a great scheme. FWIW my youngest is about to do them and doesn’t seem overly bothered neither was my eldest. I don’t really see the point myself but i don’t think they are harmful either. Both of mine are happy and keen to learn which above all else is what I want. They are not at the top of their classes but so what, they are well adjusted, have lots of friends and like school, job done at this stage i’d say.

I use an iwata and it’s superb, compared to a can is a million miles away and way more flexible in what you can achieve.

It wasn’t about fixing a lawnmower, it was about rebuilding it from its component parts, it would have been better if it had been an hour so he could have shown more detail on stuff like the carb , magneto etc. I definitely fall into the mechanical geek category so enjoyed it immensely and look forward to the next ones….

not that i would buy an aldi compressor… but i would convert to 1/4″ BSP and then to PCL19 or similar (19 is easy to get hold of) also bin the recoil hose and get some normal straight hose, you wont regret that… :-)

International rectifier had already stated that there was to be no inward investment to Newport and when infineon bought IR it was accelerated, they had already invested heavily into a 12″ fab in Villach so the 6″ fab in Newport was always going to be on a back foot. When infineon took over at Newport they surveyed the staff and asked them to describe their positions as a painting, one guy said “it’s like the sun on the horizon, only we don’t know if it’s sunrise or sunset”. There are some very competent people there who’s skills will be either lost or drained abroad which is a huge shame never mind the impact on local communities.

The semiconductor plant is up for sale and will probably close as they are too far behind with wafer size to be cost efficient.. :(

Could be worse, my MIL told me that wearing PJ’s in public should be a criminal offence when quizzed as to on what basis the law should change her answer was pretty much because she says so! (oh and I’m a smart arse for asking the question apparently). :D

Not that I agree with selling arms to anyone much less the more dubious governments out there but the infographic is a bit misleading IMO, from the guardian:
“This article was amended on 8 August 2014. An earlier version in both the headline and the text said that the British government is reviewing the sale of £8bn in arms and military goods to Israel. To clarify: of the £8bn of controlled export licences under review £7.75bn is for commercial equipment, mostly cryptographic software to supply Israel’s mobile phone networks.”
It still doesn’t excuse the sales as a whole but i’m not sure the figures can be relied upon and as we know if you post on STW someone is bound to check!

I think it’s quite a good story to be honest, he is a right manipulative git and shows how people can be undermined quite easily…. Mind you Helen is not what could be described as a hard nut to crack…. Not that she deserves it… And that’s saying something…

I work in Wales with a fair few welsh people and I’m pretty sure they dont base any dislike of the english on the basis of the building of reservoirs. In my experience the issue which they are more pissed off about is the north wales coast being a dumping ground for all the “problem” residents of england. The vast majority of people don’t really care as long as wales keeps its identity and its rich history is recognised(which in some ways is better than englands IMO). I’d go as far as to say that they more political ones I know hate the Cardiff government more as they believe that the north of the country is ignored. I really enjoy around the world cups (football and rugby) as there is a huge amount of good natured piss taking even though no one I know really cares who wins too much. I must say the guys from scotland are a bit different but they are mainly rangers supporters so that may be a reason….

This issue has come up before and got a bit heated  . My view remains that plugs and sockets in this country are sold to a well tested safety standard which makes it a legal requirement to manufacture to that standard. socket covers which are marketed as a safety device don’t have any standard to conform to and thus need no testing. Of course you can overcome the safety features with a certain amount of determination and skill but there is always a way round any safety system (i’ve seen this in industrial setting waaaay to many times where interlocks etc have been deliberately defeated). covers in themselves may not present an increased risk but in my opinion they dont improve the safety in any significant way and introduce a potential method of defeating the safety design of the socket. With regard to extension leads… i’m not a fan, they use a bit of a legal loophole at the moment which allows them to present a much higher danger of the shutters being defeated. I dont use them at home or work for this reason and also because they are far to easy to damage and misuse (daisy chains etc). The only thing we used when the kids were small were stair gates which were a pretty obvious safety device, that was pretty much it… they seemed to survive!.

you can get c spanners which are hinged to adapt to different sizes but looking at your image id either mod an old socket to fit or use a pair of point nose pliers or god forbid tap it round carefully with a punch. If you are careful you’ll be fine.

Oh and in my opinion most people on here are good people, some piss takers and lightweight trolls but i’m convinced that the majority would help you out if the need arose. See any number of threads on mental health issues (or any health issues) relationship advice (particularly when kids are involved), and any number of other things!

Hi stu, i could give give you my builders info but I’m not sure how far he travels, he is good though and would be able to run the whole build for you with no hassle. I’ve recommended him to a few friends and they have all been happy with his work. cheers, marcus

I didn’t say it was wrong in any way I just stated it was one of those things that people like to dislike. As for Lego I only do it if it’s a birthday gift or Christmas so three times a year at most and I help with the initial builds although I suspect they won’t need my help soon.. . We tend not to get it for any other reason, I myself got a pair of socks, call it rampant consumerism but I will wear them until they have holes in so I don’t feel too bad.

Wow I love this traditional seasonal thread, it always reminds me how people love to dislike something.. anything… and if you want to find those people then stw is the place to be. Oh and merry Christmas everyone… I’m loving today’s fun and am king of the Lego… At last…

You’ll struggle to do a swap to LED you need a fairly big metal backplane for a COB or a full IMS board array for heat dissipation if want a decent output and also a power controller. It would be way cheaper to replace the whole unit with an LED unit. Oh and don’t buy cheap as they really are crap.
