From what you describe you want a biometric (fingerprint) lock as she is unlikely to misplace her finger… However P-Jay is right that when i had a fob system installed at my last place we still used mechanical locks when the place was empty. Also retrofitting the lock may prove a challenge…. Assuming you are using eurocylinders i would just suck up the potential cost of replacing the lock tbh, they are very easy to replace and available at any diy place (it take literally minutes to do). she will either learn her lesson and not lose another key or simply wont get another!.

I cant say i liked it…. it seemed to be the legacy project of the architect with very little real input from the clients who were paying for it. Undoubtedly a very striking piece of design but not one for me, the vast area it occupied just seemed a little wasted with long corridors etc and to be honest reminded me me of a primary school built in the 60’s. BUT if they were happy with it then that’s what counts so good on them for going for an original piece of design I’m just not entirely convinced that its actually what they really wanted.

Also if you are looking to get it into automotive then it needs to be a: cheap, b: cheap and c: cheap. Getting into automotive is incredibly difficult and they don’t open doors to small players. Your device would have to bring substantial benefits and go though massive amounts of testing before it would be approved and most of that would be at your cost. Being RF makes it even harder, and if it’s an additional safety feature then good luck!. If however it improves performance or reduces manufacturing cost (ideally both then you may stand a chance). This other thing will be timescales which WILL be long!. I don’t want to put you off but I do similar stuff and it’s incredibly hard expensive work even when you have support and as I say is look a universities ( approach their engineering depts) and see if you can get a PhD student on board with your idea it will cost an element of ownership but you’ll get a fair bit done. Universities these days are set up for spin out and so a business could be created off the back of that work. Again, good luck!

It’s pretty expensive to develop any kind of electronic product and you’ll be expected by any partner to stump up some cash ( expect tens of thousands). A patent is expensive too, my honest advice would be to approach a uni that has a set up that may help, you’ll have to give up some element of control and possibly some degree of IP, BUT you stand more chance of stuff like innovate UK funding and commercial interest. There is no chance of this govt supporting you without a very strong reason and they are likely to expect far more than an idea or even proof of concept. Good luck though and keep banging on doors!

All sounds a bit complex to me  in my day we went to pick up our results, denied in our heads how bad we (I) had done and then went to get totally hammered. woke up the next day and faced the music and desperately grabbed any course going…. still, it was free so worth a punt. shame my degree has nowt to do with what i do now though!. 8)

In my defence, my list is a throw back to my days as a site engineer where we had that as a basic kit. interestingly we were not allowed to used pipe grips or adjustable spanners etc due to the habit of slippage which damaged the user and more importantly the thing you were trying to undo. I’ve tried using leatherman type tools but generally found them compromised compared to stand alone tools which i’m likely to have anyway. as for tools i’ve bought but never really used… basin wrench and immersion heater element spanner, firt one used once in 10 years and second became redundant when we got a combi boiler, oh and i bought some spring compressors at the weekend which i doubt i’ll use again.

First thing you need is a decent tool box….. i prefer the drawer type as it keeps things separate and easy to get to then (in no particular order)
    metric socket set
metic combi spanners (up to 20mm)
decent set of screwdrivers (pz and flat)
ratchet screwdriver and bits inclucing torx
    decent metric allen keys
    multimeter
couple of sets of mole grips
various hammers (including one soft face)
    cordless drill/driver
    cheap sds drill
saws for both metal and wood
    dremel….
    workmate can come in handy
    decent set of drill bits
    spirit level
    tape measure

I’d say that with those you can tackle most ordinary jobs around the house. you can add stuff as you need it for specialist stuff…. most power tools excluding drills just speed stuff up and you wont be knackered if you are using them all day but if you are doing a lot of one thing then you can get the best tool for the job.

Ok thanks for the more helpful ones…. As far as i can see Children under 11 travel free with a fare paying adult ( either contactless or oyster card) on all tube and overground (including euston to watford junction) so in effect id only be looking at adult tickets as long as i paid via contactless which i assume requires no set up in advance. Does anyone know if this is actually correct?

    marcus7

That TFL site says you dont need an oyster card if they are travelling with an adult who is using pay as you go so do you need a special ticket?? (not entirely sure what they system is!)

say what you fellas… I don’t give a shit for the following reasons:
    1. spent the whole day with my fantastic kids doing a sponsored walk for their school and raised a decent amount!.
    2. had confirmation from the gov on a grant approval which will secure work for me for the next two years
    3. signed renewal contracts with our biggest customer which means i can pay off the mortgage (and no im not moving!).
    4. came to appreciate that being upset by nobbers really isn’t worth it so crack on with things that are.
I’m in a very good place at the moment as a lot of stuff that was stressing me has now gone away and i can have a bit more perspective….. might even buy some trousers

The biggest issue we have is recruiting new members especially blokes, it would seem that a lot of them seem to think its “wimmins work”. at our school almost all the active members are from the same year so when our kids leave there will be a real issue. There is a little bit of politics but because there is a greater need to support the school its left to one side. I really enjoy it and have arranged a sponsored walk along part of the sandstone trail this weekend to raise funds, got about 8 families to do it! which is a bit crap but any money is better than none and hopefully we will enjoy it!. summer fair next week so that me stinking of burgers and sausages! :D . We also support cancer research UK via the PTA helping them to organise stuff at the school so we really try to reach out to the community as a whole. It just a shame that there are maybe only six of us to do it as it can feel a bit crap when people critise what you are doing for not being good enough and yet contribute nothing. For me its about giving my kids as much as we can toward their education so any political crap or complaints are ignored by me!.

Hi Mark, that’s truly appalling news and I can’t begin to imagine what you are going through. I don’t know where you are based but if you need anything myself and plenty on here will help you out, don’t be afraid to ask, concentrate on the important stuff. Keep strong fella.

Get onto the phone to them NOW, My experience is that they will help you out but you must talk to them as soon as possible (dont expect fantastic terms but they will be flexible).

Being only 8 and 10 that’s probably not that case and my wife who works there would back that up. Same probably can’t be said at high school and in any case I really am not a fan of swearing in front children and surprisingly is one of the few things I will call people out on.

They are using a big new Holland tractor and trailer to shift the soil which takes up a good chunk of the entrance road to our estate, you have to drive over the pavement to get in/out. Not an issue in my pos car but people have had to leave there cars on the main road. He’s got another concrete pour next weekend so I’ll make sure my cars out first because I’m doing a sponsored walk with the kids, forearmed is forearmed as it were!. Hopefully that’ll be the concrete done so we can get in and out!. Trying not to moan but the if the effin and jeffin that was happening on Saturday is anything to go by then I’d rather the kids were inside!

You may well be right but being told to get a life is not what I’d call friendly, quite the opposite. You accused me of whining when you were shown that you hadn’t read my post again I don’t see that as friendly, in fact you used it as a diversion. Still, as was pointed out to me some people do treat these things as a game and I shouldn’t react. Well fair point seeing it from others point of view I can see why they do it.

Basically he’s using some local farmers to dispose of the soil and they are only available at weekends and evenings, which basically means the build will be very drawn out (6+ months) he did get a quote from my builder but he was too expensive. I’m not looking forward to the summer because it look like our garden will be pretty much a no go area due to the noise and mess but the design looks interesting so it will be good to see the result. There, you see it’s called a conversation which I’m happy to engage in at any time and it’s not that hard! As a side note I showed these posts to a friend in education who specialises in online bullying, she agreed that it wasn’t, however, she did say that this I something that they see quite a bit with “packs” of kids and adults alike. It can escalate quickly and they generally advise not to engage as it really is a no win situation. I probably shouldn’t even write this as it just feeds the situation, she noted despite my efforts to explain my self there will always be those who will willfully ignore you to press thier own views. It would appear she it right with some on here who really enjoy digging into people. I suppose at the end of the day this is only a cycling forum an I can walk away and yes some of the posters on here are genuinely empathetic and helpful, others not so much.
