you can’t tether on 3 unless you have the one account, I know this when I last renewed, even though they have all you can eat packages it’s the only contract which allows it.

I’ve just had to do this ( changing a single to a two story), digging out proves to your structural engineer that the footing will support the extra weight. ours were a little over 1m and they like to see the bottom!. it’s a plain to dig especially if you have restrictions on access. we were lucky as the footings were made to be two story and don’t need underpinning. a structural engineer will tell you where he wants the hole and building control will want to see the calculations, it cost us over £1500 for this alone, although there were other calculations needed for the other side of the house which are a lot more complex.

have to say its all becoming a bit of a yawnfest, it wouldnt be a grand design these days without some amazingly expensive glass and a shafted builder…. There appears to be no mix these days and as said above its all about the hinges and hand made austrian taps. yes it is a grand design but how many people really have £1M to spend on a pet project. To some, spending £100K would be pretty strong and theres no reason to say that it wouldnt be a grand design (its been done before!!). I’ve said in the past that my decisions on the show are becoming more about the people and to be honest these days the ego projects are getting right up my nose. A balence is what is needed so a bit of “hippy” (for want of a better word) design would be nice to see. And finally… budget, why is it when they go over by £100K they alway manage to “find” it somehow… i know i couldn’t!

well I’ve seen my fair share of strikes since the 70’s and all that seems to have happened is the unions have become weaker… infact I can’t honestly remember when they have helped. if you want me to be honest IME most people just don’t care and be that due to media reports or apathy people have become or maybe always were not generally interested in things outside their immediate worlds. STW appear to be far more interested in such matters and I sometime think that they are often in the minority of the population. Ive seen it on here where peoples interest in a teachers struck doesn’t go beyond the personal inconvenience it causes. Any and all strikes will I reckon be essentially be ignored by the majority as it will not affect them in any significant way and life will carry on. the unions are so restricted now and the media no longer supports them ( not that they did) that the impact can at best be minimal. IME you have to go way into the past to get to a time when the unions had a real voice and one that was to be reckoned with which even though I’d never join a union is a shame.

yeah I get that but I just find it hard work, like the Chester thread where you made some negative remarks at first then some good advice!. I just hate the idea of a fella that lives relatively close not being able to see the good stuff in life!. I can’t honestly say I’ve read all your posts so maybe I’m just picking up on certain ones!. just had to say something really! :-)

now I’m not being funny but I couldn’t see who posted this but I somehow guessed it was you project. seriously are you genuinely this negative about things? it’s just that many of the posts I see you on you are hardly a ray of light. i’m generally very positive about life and find your general view a bit depressing. don’t get me wrong, I’m not questioning your views because fair enough and all that but really? do you consider the world in general to be that bad?.

+1 for the roofbox company (next day for my kamei husky xxl!) AND the supply free hoist straps to store it in your garage. cant fault it really and improves any holiday experience as you dont have to overload the boot so you cant see out of the back!.
Edit, yes they are a PITA to fit on tall cars (Zafira) and as far as i know you cant fit one to a 500 ;-) (well not mine anyway)

you could do go ape at delamere, the crocky trail, or go to llandegla, plenty of spa hotels etc zoo is good, bit of retail at Cheshire oaks, plenty of walking on the sandstone trail, beeston castle, ice cream farm at tattenhall, loads to keep you occupied for a weekend.

not like you to be negative eh project???, at the risk of your wrath I enjoy it and so do my kids, where I live everyone makes an effort and its more like a fancy dress street party, you could even say it brings the community together which is a good thing!. all the kids are well behaved without an egg in site, as for bonfire night we usually go to an organized display as it’s better value. Christmas is excellent with family and friends all getting together and again the kids love it!

Thing is with plasterers is that they tend to set a price and stick to it.an avereage room should cost no more than a couple of hundred quid if prepped up front, less if its just a skim. once you have bought the materials and possibly bought at least some tools the diffence in price will probably be less than £100. Unless you are very lucky to get it right first time you’ll end up with a mess that will still need a pro to sort. However if she really wants to give it a try (and good on her i say as i wouldn’t)then just get enough for one wall and id suggest youtube as its often a good resouce for methods etc. Oh and if she does manage to do a decent job I’ve got some major plastering work at work and home!! :-)

It may well be customer attitude sometimes but that last time i was there i was asking for a new rear wheel as my old hope bulb had finally died. the guy at the counter really didnt seem interested until i said my budget was around the £200 mark and to be honest he said he would have to order the parts to build it so at that point i thought better of it and left. I went to a nice man in a shop in chester and he couldn’t have been more helpful and he got the buisness (and i got my wheel!). As an OT i met some very nice chaps in PUSH in ambleside over weekend just wanted to say good luck with thier shop!

There are only three things DIY i never attempt, brick laying (as i’m too slow at it), Gas boiler fitting/ repair (excluding pcb replacement) as that would be illegal and…. plastering, compared to a pro i may as well be pebbledashing. General builders i know who do some plasterwork are still no where near as good as someone who does it for a living.

I have to say this is one of the reasons i chose to live in the countryside, its great to be able to get the kids out and picking blackberries, chestnuts etc within 5 mins of leaving the house. I just wish i was better at identifying stuff when the enevitable “daddy what plant is this??” arises.

“Not near anything”…. are you mad there is a fabulous chemical works just down the road… i’ll call it ICI to show my age… The shop hasn’t changed in over 20 years (i used to go there back in the day to get x-lite Ti bolts). IME Dave was never that friendly… i once asked for some some mudguards and was told told “get a wet arse!”, which was kind of funny but i dont think he was joking. Last time i was there i was lied to about fixing my wheel but they were cheap which i guess is why they keep going. For those who have not visited the shop just imagine a specialized concept store and then the absolute opposite!.

Yeah i tend to agree… but before we stop can i just canvass some opinion on the best policy on overtaking an accelerating unladen truck which is cresting a blind hill on a dual carrageway at sunrise ( sun on your right ) in a hybrid lexus… :-)

As it happens we need a phone system at work as we are on a single line, dont know much about these but i would be interested if the price was right and it was a straightforward install.

It a very hard question but very few blokes i know regret having kids… regret the women they had them with but not the kids. At your age i’d hope you would have some life experience and realise the kind of commitment that is required and the sacrifices you will make. Any guy that says that it will not change them or thier lives is either a liar of an asshat. From my experience i didn’t mind either way, we said kids= great, not having kids= great. Dont get hung up on your feelings now because i can garantee* that if you do have them you’ll love it!.
    * i cant of course do that but assuming you are an average, compassionate good kind of guy you’ll be OK.

Slightly OT, but i got a call from the PRU today asking me if id like one of their nice reps to visit my company to show how cheaply they could provide pivate medical insurance. I let him talk through his scrip then politely to him that as a company we were not interested and i felt that moraly it was wrong to que jump the current system, he replied that what would i do if i had something “untreatable” i replied “probably die i guess if its untreatable”….. He was foxed by that but didnt give up, he offered me treatments to help with the stopping of smoking (no one in the company smokes) and really seemed suprised that i thought it was wrong and that the NHS has, in my experience given me the medical care I need. Of course this wasn’t entirely true and if you want to go private i havn’t much of an issue but as im fully paid up on my NI contributions I’m going to stick with that!!

£60 enforced fine for an unautharised at ours, only changed this year (althought the rule has existed for some time). Its a fair rule as far as i’m concerned, some parents properly take the mick ( two weeks off for a trip to Disney!!). Ours isnt on strike as far as im aware but this may be a timing thing. I have to say I know a fair few teachers and am very good friends with a deputy head and they dont share some of the views expressed on here. They may be exceptional and i suppose it depends on the school but they dont allow themselves to be stressed and generally enjoy the work (just the parents who are a PITA ;-) )
