Ive got one and really enjoy riding it. I have the Tiagra version which at the time was (on sale) £600. I have the grey version but in reality its more like a dark petrol blue colour. I Put on some 40c nanos and ride it mainly off rode. QR’s front and rear may put some people off but i think its great value at the price i paid.

A mate has the orange and although bright its a little flatter. Paint chips fairly easily so the grey also hides that fairly well, but it doesnt bother me as i bought it to ride it not admire it. He recently had a replacement frame as a problem with the dropouts meant the wheel slipped out a couple if times. But theyve now changed the dropout design and he has the new version (ive not had an issue with my old version).

It was like that before they resurfaced it, I guess maybe they’ll do it again if enough of the horsey brigade complain?

I usually do it as a climb rather than descent, but it is rideable both directions on a CX let alone MTB (ok you have to pick a line !)

BTW there is a tree down in the woody bit of Track40 which is a lift over job.

    Nice write up thanks.

I totally agree about the navigation on the fly. I was recently in France and had plotted some routes to ride. One had a closed road that caused a major headache to re-route around and the Bolt was no help on that front.

I’m interested and will keep an eye on things, but can’t commit until nearer the time when I know if the planets align in terms of weather, being injury free and family commitments etc etc blah blah.

Think 40c Nano’s might be a bit draggy for the road jaunt?

Any idea what the start time window is for the White Roads event? Can’t see anything on the website and it interests me but would be a fair drive to get there. Good luck for both events btw.

I’ve tried the craft and DHB ones. Both definately work and are great. The craft has the slightly longer torso of the two, so that’s my preferred product.

Ooohhh lovely, I really want one of these and been waiting for some non studio pics for a while, so thanks.

What size frame is that ? 16.5 or 18, it looks quite small?

Yep the ranger doesn’t mind the singletrack but objects to the features/large jumps that were/are being built (but people don’t seem to learn). The trail I did up there I made sure was rideable for everyone.

Now THAT looks like a whole heap of fun bike. Enjoy.

Have a look at the Specialized Roll (low entry), sit up and beg position, nice comfy big volume tyres and saddle, step through to make it easy on/off. May fit the bill…good luck.

The Strada 1200 is currently £166 on wiggle.

Pretty good price, however for mixed on/off road use I think the Toro will suit me better.

Do these exposure lights (Toro/Strada/Race) have a pulse mode for road commuting?

Like a couple of others I want one light to use both on and off-road and not sure which is most suitable.

^ thread above relates to ‘old’ 26″ wheel frames, both current frame versions have had major revisions since then.

If I had the money I would be buying the slackline, the main plus point for me being the slacker head angle.

Bob, I have been using a charge spoon on my CAAD for a while, and it doesn’t have any protruding stitching that rubs the lycra.

I am getting a Fabric scoop soon to try and those don’t have any stitching at all. They do various comfort levels of the scoop.

    Nice Work.

What do you think of the Oka frame and how the bike rides? I don’t think I’ve seen you say. Does it feel a heavy frame?

    Thanks all.

@Spin “with the trails at Abriachan and Craig Dunain” are these easy to find from the GGW? What kind of trails are they, I would be a on hired hardtail and not looking for anything particularly gnarr.

@epicycle – I read your 20″ wheeled effort post. I like the look of the Redcastle loop but maybe Dores direction offers more in the way of scenery??

I think weather at the time will be the deciding factor of GGW or road (I do both).

I left no rubbish on the trail I built there over winter, so it’s not mine.
There is no excuse for that.

I know someone who’s done some others, there are still new ones being worked on now.

There is a couple of hours worth of riding in St Leonards, if you know your way around. There has been plenty of pixie work over this last winter, with 3/4/5 new trails.

Still quite muddy at the moment, ground conditions do suffer, best after a long dry spell.

I wouldn’t say it was worth a long drive to ride there, but if you are localish it’s a good place for a summer weekend/evening ride. Not much in the way of elevation.

Tilgate is rideable, all the XC stuff is unaffected by the closure of ‘ride Tilgate’ and some of those trails are still rideable, just not signed/marked any more. Still plenty to ride there, again it’s a case of knowing your way around and it has similar ground conditions, although slightly better than St Leonards.

If anyone needs some pointers let me know.

Idiots, I just don’t get it, they think they have a right to be there more than riders do.

I’ve removed branches jammed between trees across the trail on LOM before. I can understand why someone might walk down/up it, but why anyone would walk down Wizards Sleeve I have no idea – other than for sabotage purposes.

A tarmac rake should be sturdy enough for the job. Something like this: http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p53966

the only Mcleod tool in the UK I’m aware you can purchase is this @ £90 delivered: https://www.btr-fabrications.com/product/trail-tool/

I have to agree, a fantastic episode, the best I can remember for quite a while. Great bloke & project.

I’m surprised he didn’t make/adapt a room so his daughters could sleep there though.

    This looks like it? http://www.expressandstar.com/news/2010/05/27/rock-house-going-up-for-auction/

Stayed at the Rose & Crown, Nether Stowey a couple of years ago in November for a similar trip.

Can’t rememeber how much it was but it wasn’t pricey when sharing a room/rooms. Large bike store + bike wash (hose), hearty evening meals and beer of course. Worth a look.

It certainly is a lovely area.

We stayed there a few weeks ago and did the full Kayak descent down the river. I took my road bike and it was great for that, but also wished I had my MTB as well.

Is that rock jump the one off the road by the tunnel? It’s gonna hurt unless he closes his arms!

I recognise the bridge with the bikes against the railing as well, isn’t it the one with the dam and the ‘chute’ for the kayak’s?

As above, head along the BW across the road from Smith & Western, take the first turn off it on your right, and stay right. There are a couple trees down but diversions have been worked around them.

even at the closest zoom level

Not sure if this will help you, but I find if I can’t find a trail on the normal map, if you change the map to ‘Satellite’, you can sometimes zoom in further and be able to find it.

I don’t know if there is anything better, but I’m very happy with my set, bought for around the same price 6 months ago.
