Oh, and, as with coaching be extremely careful if you ever touch a child. And make sure that in the case of serious injury, you cannot be accused of allowing it to happen. Hope this doesn’t put you off.

Explain how you intend to referee then game before the match starts. Remember different age groups have different laws so be clear.

I have some limited experience, as a school teacher. I found it very difficult but it did get easier. The better the players understand the game, the easier. Stick to your guns.

I have seen some ridiculously biased refereeing in order to even up matches. Once it’s obvious which team is going to win, there’s no point in them completely walloping the other team – it’s of no benefit to anyone and if the difference in the scores reaches 50, the match ends (I believe).

Good for you and good luck.

If things get get too heated and players look like they’re about to lose theirs heads completely, slow things down.

    Learn to fake authority.

Learn the laws. Learn to quote them if possible.

I am that sort of guy. He probably wanted to acknowledge what had happened without getting into a really deep and sensitive analysis. He probably didn’t really know what to say so thought he would try to say something positive and forward looking. People, even ones you don’t know closely, do care about other people, generally. Give him the benefit of the doubt. Hope I don’t sound like a duck.

Whatever you are feeling is ok. Being sensitive to such comments is ok and not unusual.

    Be really kind to yourself.

I’ve walked in to Sourlies from the end of the road along Loch Arkaig. Personally I wouldn’t even contemplate cycling that way.

Sourlies is in an amazing place. Great views, particularly of the pointy shaped Corbett whose name I can’t recall without going to look it up. There are mice in the bothy.

Knoydart is a great place to explore. My mates and I have discussed approaching Barisdale by boat next time.

Resist any instinct to wade in all guns blazing. What exactly does your wife suggest?

Telling the school without telling your daughter is a possible step. Obviously you would have to explain that you don’t want your daughter to find out that you have intervened.

Mood changes could be due partly or wholey to hormonal changes. Puberty is a horrible thing. Obviously that doesn’t excuse any nastiness on the part of others.

Reassure your daughter you love her. Find something she enjoys that will help her confidence, if possible.

Have you asked your daughter what she thinks would help? To what extent have you discussed it with her?

Don’t expect everything to be fixed instantly but do expect help from the school. Good luck and best wishes.

Great video about the isochronous curve.

I believe, although I am not certain, that if you hang a chain from it’s ends it hangs in the shape of an isochronous curve.

Mate, I understand how you feel completely. I have felt trapped at times. Family life is intense. My time is no longer my own. My wife and I have been close to splitting up.

Talk. Take advice. Consider marriage counseling. Be honest. Decide what’s wrong. Decide what you want. Write your thoughts down. Be honest. It’s not easy.

I’ve decided to change careers to give me less stress and more time. I’ve also started to address my mental health. They were linked. I feel happier about things despite the instability. Let’s face it though, the rat race sucks.

I realise he wasn’t charged with assault. I’m not saying that the jury reached the wrong decision as the law stands. However, as a normal, law abiding citizen sitting at home watching the news, it doesn’t inspire any confidence in our justice system. In my opinion, there is almost always an alternative to punching someone in the way he did.

I’m a big cricket fan and Ben Stokes is am absolutely brilliant batsman, bowler and fielder.

    But that’s irrelevant.

I don’t understand how he isn’t guilty of assault. Video clearly shows him punching someone and knocking them to the floor.

I think BBC news report just referred to the Italian PM as Antonio Conte. Did anyone else notice? Did he go from Chelsea manager to Italian PM?

I used to think Simon Mann was boring but now I actually quite like him. He’s authentic and provides balance to the TMS team.

Klunk – I disagree about Cook. He was absolutely right to be on the front foot but instead of pushing through he should have held his bat still and let the ball hit it. Easier said than done though because it was a great ball by Ashwin.

England need a large total. A couple of guys need to score hundreds. Take the game deep.

Michael Vaughan is so annoying. He sensationalises everything, like he’s trying to justify his own existence.

Gower, Boycs, Vic, Swannie, Simon and, of course, Aggers are all excellent but MV is just so dislikeable.

Drove to Lake Garda in the van last summer. We went through Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria and the Brenner Pass. Stopped a night in The Ardennes region of Belgium (which was lovely) then in Germany then stayed in Dolomites for a while before heading to Lake Garda. Returned via a similar route but spent more time in Austria. As far as I can remember, we avoided tolls except the vignette to get us through Austria. Really liked the Tirol region. Also it’s interesting how the language and culture change gradually – there is much more German spoken in northern Italy than I expected.

Thanks again for all the replies. I don’t know where else I could get this sort of insight. A lot to think about; I suppose reading some of your replies has been a bit of a reality check.

Along time ago, after uni but before I trained to be a teacher I worked for three weeks for a building firm as a quantity surveyor of sorts. It was very boring although I didn’t really know what I was doing and I my heart wasn’t really in it.

Off to read the other thread on how to become a hippy.

    Sounds a bit like me.

Is she on medication because that can average out the highs and well as the lows.

Is it the getting changed and getting out there that’s a challenge or is it a bit of a slog once she’s out there? If it’s the former, then talk it through and agree that you’ll be quite firm when coaxing her into action.

Lastly, don’t underestimate the importance of talking and social interaction – for both of you, with each other and with friends – for addressing problems and being distracted from them.

    Things will get better.

I’ve been to both, albeit a very long time ago.

Stopped in Budapest while inter-railing in August 1996. All I can remember is that it was really, really hot. I ate wild boar goulash in a restaurant. I am probably one of the people for whom there is more there than I realise.

Went to Krakow with a girlfriend in about 2002. Thought the main square was spectacular. Catholic churches were really, really full for mass. Visited Auschwitz, salt mines and Zakopane, all using public transport. Was on a tram when it smashed into a car.

I would choose Krakow and visit Zakopane and explore the tatra mountains without a doubt. That would be my preference. Have fun wherever you go.

Shropshire, Northumberland, Forest of Bowland, Dorset all good suggestions. For what it’s worth, I quite like Barmouth and pretty much all of the Welsh coast. Criccieth or somewhere else on the Lleyn peninsula is another possibility.

I used to live in Shropshire where there’s Ironbridge Gorge, the Long Mynd and Ludlow. Authentic enough, rather than too touristy but with enough pubs and amenities.

And I grew up in Dorset. Perhaps somewhere like Seatown would appeal although some of the roads near Weymouth get busy. Portland, Durdle Door, West Bay all nice in their own way. Sherborne is nice but apart from the abbey, there’s not much to actually do.

Have a nice time, wherever you go.

As usual, Scotland seems to have its laws bang on. And because the Highlands are so ace, people do care for them when they visit.

Well done to anyone who’s ever filled a bin liners with rubbish out on the hill. Well done to those of you (us) who have put something back by way of maintenance to trails, bothies or whatever. I’d really like to make more of a contribution…

When people do things in groups, they can often be, or be perceived to be, more stupid, reckless and/or selfish. Willy waving can be a contributing factor. A teenager walking down the street is fine but a group can be intimidating to some people. Put decent people together in a group to support a football team and they sometimes do things which would be completely out of character for individuals. I don’t mind coaching groups providing they are considerate to others. Don’t block the trail unless absolutely necessary; don’t destroy the trail; don’t drop litter etc etc. Consideration innit.
