but the offence had still been commited

Civil wrong rather than criminal offence. They would need to prove they’d suffered a loss. Had they not cancelled the charge, you could have continued to contest it. If you could show you’d paid, then there is no loss.

IANAL but I do read a bit around this area and I am stubborn

I’d say not, but was amazed recently to see someone crocheting with a metal crochet hook in the boarding gate area.

I was in the same place as you about ten years ago. I still can’t skate or bmx but I do have photos of me looking very middle aged on a board and bike. My son does both much better than me and I’d like to think that his dad joining in was part of that.

Word of warning: all the armour didn’t stop me breaking a wrist (not badly) and dislocating a shoulder (still hurts years later)

    Good luck. Enjoy

I am one of those with first and middle name Richard and Edward, in my case finished off with Smith as a surname. Got all the way through school without the short versions being mentioned. In fact it first came up about a year ago, which probably says a lot about the company I currently keep!

Is America’s apparent blindness to the harm caused by the prevalence of guns, similar to many countries when looking at deaths and injuries caused by vehicles?

Someone (barrister Martin Porter perhaps) commenting on said graph asked if those battling to prevent vehicle deaths could have 40x the funding of those fighting terrorism.

Maybe Americans fighting gun violence could be afforded the same level of control and cash given to those fighting terrorism.

Watched a plumber lay an unfolded newspaper across an almost full to the brim pan. Waited for it to become sodden on the sheets touching the water before he pushed hard on it a couple of times in succession. Blockage disappeared and water flowed again.

Never had reason to try it myself since. Not hugely keen to either despite his success.

I used NowTV recently. Worked a treat on both my iPad and onto a tv via my son’s Xbox.

Something like £7 for a Sky Sports Pass for 24 hours or £11 for a week

Doesn’t eBay sort this out for you? Decent photos and a good description, and then leave it to the market.

I’ve always started sales off at £1 (much to my wife’s horror) and offered to post them. Two Islabikes went over what I’d have offered them at, while my Specilized Camber got a lower figure than I’d have liked. If there are enough people looking/bidding surely that’s what the bike is worth?

I’ve worn a Bell for a year now. I almost exclusively ride downhill or fiddle around on jumps, so use it with the chinbar on pretty much all the time. I take the whole helmet off to ride/walk up on fore roads or in uplift (obviously).

I’ve taken the chinbar off and used it for XC bimbling and it’s fine for that too. In reality I’m more likely to pick up an older XC helmet. It’s not that asking the chinbar off is difficult (it takes seconds and I do it regularly to wash the cheek padding) but I have a specific helmet that I’m more used to.

Signed up to another forum with this user name soon after I’d been knocked off and used my face to slow myself and the bike (to which I was still attached) down.

    I don’t recommend it – tarmac won

Love the series, but the invention of the vacuum flask (mentioned a few posts back) led to my favourite joke.

When he was younger, David Beckham came into training just after Christmas. Sir Alex asks him what he got for a present, to which David answers “A flask. It’s amazing – it keeps hot things hot and cold things cold”

“What have you got it then lad? “

    “Ice cream and coffee”

I can answer the issue of a replacement car from personal experience and an understanding of insurance.

It was not your fault. You have the right to be put back into the same position you would have been in before your wife was crashed into. In this case that means access to a similar sized car. It also means you shouldn’t have to go out of your way to get it. I have, in similar circumstances:

    1. Insisted the car was delivered to me as the depot was some distance away (and collected afterwards)
    2. Charged for my own time to sort things out, once the other side’s insurer started messing me about regarding the replacement car. I warned them first and then sent an invoice, which was paid after a couple of reminders

Good luck. Insurers are keen to take your money, but less keen to pay out.

I’ve used a combination of a “ski lock” and keeping an eye out in the past. Neither good enough on its own, but together they’re enough for what you’re after.

Google ski lock and there seem to be plenty of options at just over £10

I was in a similar position with a 3 y/o tv bought from Tesco and found their customer service excellent. We agreed quickly on £70 payment and this was bank transferred to me. Original tv was about £250 and I’d had three years of use. Would have pushed harder if they’d been awkward, but I felt it a fair offer, so I accepted it and moved on.

Perfect answer – just emailed my local centre offering a stack of usable 26″ tyres and my bits and bobs which are ‘too good to throw away’ but which I can’t see myself ever using. Can’t believe I’d never thought of this.

Very much enjoyed the look on some roadies’ faces as a fellow mtb-er tried to describe the blood and scratches on his arms as “not from self-harm” but in fact managed to proclaim quite loudly that “Whatever it looks like I’m not a self-abuser”

Medoramas – I assume that you are looking to reserve a space since the area gets really busy? As an alternative to getting up early and heading there as one of the first, why not look on a map of Dartmoor and see if you can find somewhere with a similar open grassy area and stream which isn’t rammed with half of Plymouth. Dartmoor is a pretty big area with a few honeypots

Rob’s answer could be mine. Skills training two weeks ago showed up my lack of obvious skills. A desire to learn to manual made me decide to switch to flats, at least until I’ve nailed that skill.

I’m three rides into the Ryan Leech course. I will stick it out despite desperately wanting to go back to spds right now. I’m a stubborn bugger and understand one step back to go two forwards. I just wish the step back didn’t seem to have taken me quite so far right now.

Never seen anything like it, opened the curtains up to watch for a hour and considered unplugging electrical stuff as it got closer (would have been a first if I had actually done it)

Dog didn’t like it very much and when it had stopped woofing decided to join us upstairs had spent the night in my daughter’s room.

Ah, canoeing the Ardeche, this should be my specialist subject. I spent a summer there guiding (adult) PGL groups over a three day descent of the river.

In my opinion, both sets of answers are right. If you’re fit and have canoed a bit, you can run the river in a day fairly easily. Your upper body will be sore afterwards and mostly you will have paddled to make the distance, especially if the wind is upstream over the last stretch. Having worked for PGL while I was at uni, I went back and ran the river in a day with my wife some years later.

But a three day descent is a different beast. It is more of a holiday on the river. You have time to play a bit by the rapids, do the various jumps off rocks along the way (including one from inside the Arc), and chill over long lunches and late afternoons on the beaches. If you’re the type of person who likes ‘go, go go’ it will drive you mad. But if you prefer being with a guide and a group I’d suggest it will be great fun.

And one other advantage of a three day descent is escaping the crowds. By far the majority of people run the river in a day, so they need to set off in the morning and keep going to make it in one day. They end up in fairly big groups on similar sections of river. Three day people can leave later on the first day, they then set off on the second and third days ahead of the one day crowds. For perhaps 50% of your day on a three day trip, you only have other three day people around you.

Out from Ludgershall over Windmill Hill to Sidbury Hill and back close to Tidworth and Perham. Only nine miles or so, but great.
