I use a few bug hooks from b and q. I hang the bikes from their front wheels with the left pedals taken off, the handlebars turned sideways and an old sock over the crank against the wall. Our town bikes then just get propped against the wall. It works well for us.

As Elfin says, if you were speeding, you were breaking the law. You don't expect to be able to get away with breaking the law do you?

If I nicked your bike, posted on a forum saying I'd done it, would you be happy if I got away with nothing? It's just the same, except more people are killed, maimed or injured from speeding than from bike theft.

Pay the fine and stop breaking the law.

Impromptu bike race! If you can please make sure you post that up here, I'd love to take part in the inaugural papal weegie classic if I'm back from fort William in time!

I've got a G1 with the 20mm lens. It's really quite little and I enjoy using it. It's definitely smaller than a dslr but more importantly for me it feels a lot lighter. I've managed to get some nice photos from it, and I think it was good value. I wish someone made a waterproof case for it though.

I've got the Speck, and it feels pretty good. Fits well, looks simple and stealthy and feels quite protective. And it was free, which is ace.

Mt favourite component on my bike is my Gravity Dropper. I'll never own a mountain bike without an uppy downy post now, they are so good.

get a remote one if you can

Definitely agree with this, they make the post so much more useful.

I think I did, I was merely offering an alternative to the lumen race, and suggesting that for many people, a more basic and less bright option may be just as appropriate and applicable to the way they will night ride.

    EDIT: and be cheaper 🙂

I was hardly whining. Just stating an opinion in a fairly chilled out way I thought.

That's fair enough vinnyeh. I use an Exposure Enduro and I've found the burn time to be fine as I put it on low power for climbs and things, but I definitely appreciate your points there.

I can't quite see the point of having lights so bright you think you might set fire to the air. It's night riding, surely you want it to be quite dark?

My light is not so bright that I scare away all the wildlife, so I come round corners sometimes and see deer and badgers and things. I like that. No, it's not bright enough that I can go at daylight speeds, but because I can't see like I can in daylight, things feel faster anyway and that's really fun. I'm sure big lights are fun too, don't get me wrong, but they must also be quite a different experience.

    Depends where you holiday.

Good point, well made. I suppose it also depends where you live.

I can't help feeling that we have a model of how to make a happier, healthier nation right in front of us. It is a model that has less people and less power, but both of those things seem like a good idea to me. The Scandinavian countries, particularly Denmark and Sweden, seem to really focus on using government to enrich the lives of actual people, not make it easier to do business. Now, I'm not saying they're perfect, but I'd give 50% of what I earn in tax to live in a Britain more like Denmark.

Surely the point of all this – governments, economics, democracy – is to make us safer and happier, not more powerful, richer, less healthy and less happy as our system currently does? And if that's not the point, then why not?

Are you more likely to be mugged on holiday?

I'm all for it, but it's practically impossible in most UK cities I think. on most of the roads I used on my commute there simply was no room.

There's loads of room in that street for cycle paths you see how much room those cars are taking up on the sides of the pavement?that's some lovely real estate for cycle paths. In Holland they've been building housing estates with 1 car space for every 10 houses. That makes it an absolute bugger to find a space, and encourages people to use the fantastic bike network. You think there's no space because you're stuck with the current auto centric mindset.

    Where?

Every city and town, and in much of the countryside, much like they do in some European countries, like Holland.

If we had proper cycle infrastructure she'd probably be alive. People in Denmark, in Holland, in Sweden can cycle with their children sat in their box at the front distracting them, while talking on their mobiles and shopping bags dangling from the handlebars and make it safely to school or work. Remember, it is the motor vehicle that killed her.

Build decent and comprehensive segregated bike lanes and watch the cycling rate increase and the death rate fall. When will we learn? I hate this macho "well she should have been a better/more hardcore/less invincible feeling rider…" NO! She was just trying to get to work like a normal human being, she shouldn't have to suffer and fear for her life every day, because that's what our current transport system makes me do just so I can get about the city.

    Sorry for the rant.

There is nothing cool about any kind of cycling motor vehicle. At all.

    Fixed that for you coogan.

I find it really interesting how many people on here come out with comments like "grown men riding push bikes aren't cool". In that statement, heard many times in many threads, is an implicit idea that bikes are kids are adults do serious things. I don't believe we'll ever have a cycling culture if even supposed 'cyclists' come out with this rubbish.

    Bikes are cool, FACT.

I had this problem on my bike for a while. I then realised I had my forks set way too soft. I thought for ages that that might be the problem, but I didn't have a shock pump to check. Firming up the forks made a world of difference.

There's nothing more satisfying than zipping through some singletrack at top speed with your saddle perfect height for pedalling, then spotting a drop, slamming the post, and hucking like a gnarlcore off of it.

    Definitely remote.

igm – that's something I've heard from other people too, this idea that the more varied body positions that are forced on a ss rider help minimise damaging anything. This is the main reason it seems to me that having only a few gears would be the best bet, 9 or 10, maybe, or even just 5 or 6, so that you still have to move around and work hard, but not quite so hard that your knees are popping out and your heart is exploding…

Yeah, along with no rear mech hanger or cable guides! 😳

I would just like to put my virtual head above the e-parapit and say that I am getting a geared bike because my knees are hurting. I have no idea if it is because of my SS to be fair, but I only have one mountain bike and can only afford one mountain bike so I'll have to sell it in order to find out if it is the bike or not! 🙁

I have a friend who's a masochist. He's a PE teacher, so it makes sense.

Now, I've been riding with him for years and years. He has always been faster than me up the hills, still is. But, we both ride singlespeeds now, and rather than being 200m behind him on any climb, I'm maybe 2m behind him. I think the reason is that on a singlespeed, you can't go slow. If you do, you walk, and walking's rubbish, I'm not a rambler. So I beast it, get strong and go fast, and now I love climbs.

The only problem is, I would quite like a full sus now and am terrified that I buy it, and, lacking the mental fortitude to just hammer the climbs like now, suddenly end up 200m behind my mate and winching slowly and pathetically up the hills!

If you're just starting to make your own bread, then the sachets are great. They are simple and you really can't go wrong. The dried activated yeast in a tin isn't too much of a faff. It is also better value, you get far more yeast for your money as long as you regularly make bread.

I've started making my own yeast in a kilner jar, and that's working out well, it gives the loaf a totally different texture I've found, coarser and with a strong flavour. It's fun to experiment with. I'm definitely an amateur baker, but I'm learning. Enjoy the process robob.

Bringewood is where I grew up riding. There are great national quality DH tracks, little nadgery singletrack and you can spend all day there going for an explore. I love it there and still go whenever I'm down south.

I've got a Rab Momentum eVent jacket, it's a Demand with a full length zip basically. I love it, the fit is great, eVent is excellent and the hood is a great cocoon in wet weather. It was expensive, but one of the best bits of kit I have.

Isn't STW amazing? I was thinking of posting something asking where to get hold of a Wingnut, as I've been thinking of getting one for ages. And there, from the importer themselves, is the answer. Mountain bike community FTW! Thankyou spokebloke.
