Here’s my Alpine – love it!

Seems that those who have ridden both agree that both bikes are great but that the Sov has a little more to it. What are the key differences? geometry?

shaggmeister – is it the 24in or 26in version?

I’ve got my son a 2nd hand 24in version in anticipation of a growth spurt, but the forks are a bit goosed on it, I’m interested in what the options are for 24in forks.

It would seem to be a classic tactic of the non-DIY partner, if there has been procrastination over a job, start to do it badly and thus inspire the completion of the desired task by the more competent person. Or in my case realisation that I am no more competent and bring in the experts!

I have to agree with A_A on the limited window of use aspect. We would have bought 2nd hand had we known this, ours has been woefully underused.

Teadrinker: pics coming through to you this evening – apologies for the delay.

We’ve a Deuter Kid Comfort 3 which we’re about to sell

Its been great for carrying our two around, both of them were very happy in it, and the adjustable back meant that both my wife and I were able to carry them comfortably. Only really used on summer holidays etc so its in great nick

let me know if you are interested in it – email in profile

don’t worry about what you look like, as with biking you will never be as good or as stylish as the pro’s. just enjoy yourself and feel good that you are helping MrsCamo achieve a long held ambition

Another vote for Nevis cycles – nice people – the shop up at the auction mart is an offshoot of the nevis cycles shop and caters mainly for folk wanting to hire bikes

I’m not sure about the white, it looks ok on the smaller holeshot frame but I don’t think it compares to the green

I really like the metallic grey used on the mk1 Alpines but if you want something bright I think the orange used for the PAs would go well, either that or purple

Mk1 needs a 27.2 seatpost and a 68mm bb. It will be tricky to use a front mech on one as there are no cable stops, however I fitted one to use as chain guide when I ran mine 1×9, I can’t remember what size it is thought.

Ive ridden it on a dialled alpine with 140mm up front, and it was very doable. The hardest section is the rock section, its steep and I find it to be a killer for arm pump, which is nothing really to do with riding it on a HT. As said above the rock section has some marked dots on it to follow, this shows you a very ridable line. The first time I rode it the dots weren’t very visible and I really struggled to pick a line, last year with the dots to follow it was easier.

Take your time on your first couple of runs to get used to it. The boardwalk has potential to pop you off at a one point so take it easy, especially if it is a bit windy.

I’m not really a jumper but it is the bike that I’m most comfortable on in the air.

Dialled Mike has a bmx background ithink and everything he designs seems to come with a flavour of bmx in the way it rides.

    dialled love/hate

Phill Wood EBB for rock solid chain tensioning and if you pick up a mk1 it should have a mech hanger for it you change your mind and want to pop gears on.

Who’d have thunk putting some pics up on a bike forum would get them in front of the RAC’s Media Officer?

welcome to the wonder of the singletrack forum :)

    blimey thats a long one!

+1000 for it being the easiest speech in the world, and plenty of advice above as to what to include etc.

My only advice would be, if you are not a confident public speaker, and even if you are, practice. write your speech and then practice it, out loud a few times. hearing yourself say it, not just reading it through in your head, will help to iron out any problems and get you used to what you’re saying. A top tip I’ve received and used often is to read it out loud to yourself looking at yourself in the mirror. Making eyecontact with your self as you read it will help to make it more of a real life situation.

Practice will help your confidence and confidence will lead to a great speech. a great speech badly delivered is worse to listen to than bad speech delivered well.

In some cases, but not all. Things are incredibly dry here at the moment and it doesn’t take much to get things alight. The one in Fort William was allegedly started by sparks from a bonfire.

Trees down all over the Nevis Range trails, this was one of about 12 in this section alone. Trails are in great nick though, if you can find a section with no trees across it.

    Cheers Burchy1

I’d have no hesitation in recommening a Love/Hate as an option if you want an out and out SS, they’re not as hardcore by reputation as the Alpine but they are plenty tough and awesome fun to ride!

is biomass worthwhile for domestic uses, or is it better used in a commercial property?

Burchy1 – what ratio have you got there? Looks like you’ve not got a tensioner on there?

EDIT – scratch that, I’ve just noticed the chain guide

I’m up in Fort William, unsurprisingly not much different to Kinlochleven.

Hills are covered but there is no snow in more low lying areas. There is a light covering at the top Gondola station at Aonach Mor but no more. Trails in a similar frozen state.

I enjoyed many of the ones above, two yet to be mentioned that stood out for me were

The once and future King – TH White

    &

The Right Stuff – Tom Wolfe

Interestingly both were book that were set texts in English, but I loved them

First ride in daylight this year for me yesterday, cycled to meet the wife and kids in the forest, had a play with them and cycled home. Got v cold in the middle but it was worth it.

Clear bright day but bitterly cold in the wind. Awesome to be riding through though!
