wasn't it a 29er wheel with 80mm forks? which fitted the geometry of the 456 nicely.

the onone 26" rigid carbon forks do accept a 29" wheel, easily in fact. I imagine that most will if they are suspension corrected.

I've used these guys a fair bit. The boxes always have some tasty stuff in them, and if your organised you can get them delivered for meetings etc, better than the catering in my office anyway! They generate a bit of conversation too, as they're a bit of novelty.

any one know long the seatpost is above the min insertion line?

I use a 400mm Thomson at pretty much max extension so it would be a bit short anyway, but I think that Thomsons have a smaller than avg min insertion line as well, which would exacerbate this.

Obviously waterproofing will make access a bit harder, but I'd certainly rather have dry kit and an extra few seconds to access it.

As far as I can see other than bags with covers it looks like the Alpkit Gourdons.

    Any other thoughts?

If you can get hold of a Hone rear hub and mech then that would work, as the Hone rear mech hangs off the axle, not from a mech hanger.

Thats why I like the Kona s continuous seat post. seat post all the way up for the long climbs, and all the way down for the descents. One of those suspension posts would be nice but I'm yet to be convinced about their longevity, or found one that is 27.2 and 400mm plus length.

I've done that, I've got an old Kona Dawg with 100mm travel at the back and a set of Pikes on the front. Set at 125mm it rides really nicely in singletrack, for steep rocky stuff I can wind them out to 140mm to give a slightly slacker head angle and bit more suspension.

So far its been great and I think Konas are built tough enough to cope with a bit of extra travel on the front :)

Portugal is apparently very good, although the water can be a bit chilly. not sure if the weather is particularly warm at this time of year.

Or Cornwall – best time of year for surfing there.

why have they released mono and stereo remastered versions? apart from the obvious, what is the difference?

Do you have to make any changes to dropouts to do this?

Good news – Good luck with the new venture.

Although we've never met I can't think of anyone who has not praised your ability to teach and inspire them to greater things on a bike.

no idea about the weights compared to the Deore but the SLX is excellent and looks alot better than the Deore.

To follow on from what Mike said about the difference between a steel and Ti frame, I went from a Mk1 PA to a Mk1 MG and thought the MG felt nicer to ride, slightly more compliant and forgiving than the PA. However this may be entirely in my head because I'd paid 3 times more for the MG frame than I had for the PA.

It is absolutely awesome to have the Ti version of a classic design and it is my favourite bike, but I do think that if something did happen to it I would buy steel again rather than Ti (irrespective of price). Partly because steel is a bit easier to fix if something were to go drastically wrong with it, and also because I like to fly under the radar a bit and the blingyness of Ti makes you stand out a bit too much for my liking. The matt grey laquer of the MG is pretty good for keeping things low key and having taken off the decals you'd have to be a real bikegeek to know that it was Ti.

tlr – I' the same height as you and had a 56" also, the fit was great, it was just the brakes that were the issue. I did contemplate changing from the canti's to mini V's but decided I would be happier with more robust forks and discs.

had one of the first ones, and suffered the same brake judder as Ton, I'm not quite his size but still above avg at 15.5 stone. It may be that heavier riders will suffer more from this than lighter ones.

It was not very confidence inspiring and I ended up selling it. It was fun to ride on road and I enjoyed taking it offroad too, but having lost faith in the brakes I had to get rid of it.

I've got an '04 Kona Dawg which is a lot of fun. The rear travel is 100mm but its quite a burly frame and is intended for more than just XC. I've put a Pike on the front which suits it perfectly :) I think the current Dawg is now 150mm or something so the character has changed somewhat.

It is a wonderful resource and despite some individuals who try to take advantage it has remained so over the 5 or so years I've used it.

Its great for buying/selling and for relevant or OT advice

I'm still happily riding my '04 Kona Dawg, just put some Pikes on the front which has woken it up a little :)

140mm on the front and 100m rear travel is great, and I can wind the forks down for the big climbs. I think the frame was designed for 100 front and rear but the slacker angle on the front makes it a lot of fun.

I can see the office bike rack from my desk, so it should be fairly safe. there are a couple of nice bikes in there at the moment so it should be ok.

Sam – If you're still around, have you, or any of the shops that you stock, done any Bike2Work bikes? Have you managed to put any together for under a grand?

the swift does look very nice, to do bike2work would I need to do it through my LBS? I'm guessing it might be quite tight to do it all under £1k, with the frame and forks at £400.

I had been looking at on-one 29er but they don't seem to have the groupsets in stock to try to build up a bike. they do have alfines in stock tho…

also tempted by the cotic roadrat, has anyone bought a geared version through cotic? they only have a singlespeed as a full bike on the site.

any other things I should be looking at?

its a bit frustrating for me as I'm trying to excange contracts on my house and all communication is done by post, so these strikes will not help that in any way.
