THanks for all the advice re the XTrail I think better tyres and practice will be the key.

Any advice for tyres that allow good grip in snow but also have a fairly low rolling resistance? Or are the two mutually exclusive?

Any advice from the experts on here about descending a steep snowy track in an automatic 4×4?

My wife just had a fun experience in her new (to her) X Trail. she had it in 4×4 lock and also selected 1 in the auto box to limit her gear range but still felt the car running away down the slope, braking then just caused the car to skid – not a fun experience. The snow had been compacted down and she got up the track fine, but descending was not fun, especially with 3 kids in the car.

I’m sure more appropriate tyres would make a difference and we’re looking into those, but are there any techniques which would help?

    Cheers

Sheldons name is in regular circulation on the forum – and he regularly links to it on his flikr site so I doubt he’s too bothered by that.

His partners name is another matter though.

which was inevitably a success, so instantly damning the world to no more kitkats…

Does that mean that the filler bit is actually a vacuum then?

    re post 40, page 3

The first kitkat was rejected as there was no filler, so it was crused and used as filler in the 2nd attempt.

I was just about to comment of that as well.

is it to make the quotes system more formal

eg “i would like to draw the honourable company’s attention to the point raised in post 34 of this thread” ?

I’ve been considering this too. I’ll need a central vent on the top of the helmet to mount my Joystick though

Thats what I thought too – but thought I’d ask as they were so similar it seemed a bit odd that they were differentiating them.

    Thanks tragically

I was looking at the stems actually – seems like the FRS stem is freeride etc whereas the Koryak is XC/AM

    Another fan here

The hooning around in the woods attitude is the one I really identify with and enjoy a mag that reflects that. The reviews are always good as well and tend to focus on kit from a broad price range rather than just top of the range stuff.

The only issue I can see is with the separation of the classifieds into Wanted and For Sale.

I quite liked it when it was combined and think it worked better. I normally brows stuff that is for sale, but would occassionally see wanted ads that I could help with. I think the wanted section may be a bit underused now.

happy to see if anyone elses use is different though

edit – just seen vinneyh’s post – great minds eh?

yep, but super sunshine as the reflection from the snow increased the effect

Returning to the original question hanging clothes out on a frosty night won’t work, but hanging clothes out when it has snowed (particularly if its now sunny) does have a bleaching effect.

My mother in law was going on about this, and I was sceptical, but tried it with some of my toddlers clothes and it worked a treat. The whites were Daz white.

Turns out my MiL had been equally sceptical when her mother was doing it but had been similarly convinced.

OMITN – I’d like to say it you’ll be able to ride again, but based on my experience it’s looking doubtful :/

the difference between a ristretto and an espresso is about 5 seconds

As in you run the water through the coffee for 5 seconds longer, or shorter?

    What difference does this make?

It sounds like you know the answer to your question.

If you did the ride again would you take the same bike to do it? Or would you take a different bike (or change the components on your 456)?

I’ve got this issue with a Shimano rear brake & hub. I’ve convinced its the hub rather than the brake caliper, I’ve changed the pads and the disc with no improvement,

Rich S – let me know if you do consider selling your Alpine – if its an 18 that is

    Thanks for the responses.

I’m currently using Pikes on the MG and have them at 140mm most of the time so I’m not sure there is really going to be that much difference between that and the Alpine, unless I get some bigger forks for it too.

However having recently moved to the Highlands the ability to have a bit more GRR may be justified :)

What is the Alpine like for climbing? Do you need to wind the forks down or is that not required.

I’m seriously tempted by an Alpine but I’m not sure if it is different enough from my MG to justify getting one.

I’ve got a Cannondale Prophet frame that I’m selling – that fits your needs pretty well. single pivot like the 5 & Heckler, but maybe a wee bit cheaper?

    Dialled Bikes Morning Glory

I had a Mk1 PA and loved it, when a MG turned up for a decent price on the classifieds I jumped at the chance to try out the Ti version and I’m glad I did. Its on its 3rd pair of forks (Pikes which are definitely keepers) 2nd groupset, 2nd wheels and bars – the brakes have remained the same though.:)
