Damn I miss bluebells and that is a nice looking bike.  Don’t ride so much this side of the pond now (crap weather and apartment living) but Stateside, singlespeed all the way ;)

I don’t think they still sell the inserts @oldfart as there is a new, single lock-ring version of the ODI Vans.  I was tempted but ended up going for a pair of AG1s from Bike Parts UK

Cheers! Yup there are an awful lot of Chinese manufactured ‘ODIs’ on the market and 18 quid is a lot for a pair of fakes 😬

Time to bite the bullet 💸

Good to hear. Good luck with the recovery – keep us updated 👍

Tore mine with an unplanned dismount almost a year and a half ago. Unfortunately due to my age they wouldn’t even consider an MRI to check the extent of the damage let alone a repair 😔 (diagnosed with anterior drawer test).

I was 3 months off the bike and with physio regained a good range of movement by around the 6 month mark – probably a little longer before I could kneel properly. Walking reasonably normally now although some days I limp like the OAP I am 😂 and my knee does occasionally give way. I wear a hinged brace for biking (mainly BMX trails) and my strength doesn’t seem to be affected but anything involving twisting movements is definitely a no no.

Good luck with the recovery and yes, definitely go for the repair 👍

We have a pair of red cardinals here in North Georgia but our main visitors are freakin’ thieving pine siskins – seem to appear in their hundreds, scare off all the other birds and eat everything in sight 😬

OMG that is amazing – wish I was nearer.  Good luck with the project :D

Trailbuilding is so therapeutic – I now live 50% of the year in the US and spend every waking hour outside digging/riding while Stateside.

Oh this is awesome – looking forward to the updates :D

I decided to (try) to learn to skateboard last year and quickly progressed from carpet 🤣 to balance exercises in the kitchen and then on to kick turns in the unfinished basement of our US home. Unfortunately a (bicycle related) ACL incident last Christmas put paid to my Tony Hawk aspirations but I still wonder what might have been and indeed if it’s feasible to skate in a knee brace 🤔

    Good luck!

Oi @kenneththecurtain . . . old? OK, yes but still svelte(ish) ;) and @mashr . . . that original is bloody lovely – Patriots freakin’ rock.  Always wanted one and finally scratched that itch earlier this year :D

According to this list, so long as its 2005+ then yes – http://650bpalace.blogspot.com/2011/10/650b-from-26-convertable-list.html

I’ve done it on a Cove Stiffee and Kona Blast with decent width Ritchey Z Max and WTB Vigilante tyres.

Just returned to Wales after a 2 month stay in our US home and cannot believe how quiet our city centre apartment is.  Normally we’re woken every night by speeding chavs racing up the hill outside our house – a total contrast to the peace and quiet of the North Georgia mountains.  I know a lot of local folks here aren’t in favour but the 20mph speed limit definitely has a thumbs up from me.  This mornings grocery run around town to restock was so much more relaxing and I’m actually looking forward to a local bike ride later – I normally hate riding on the road.

Do you know of any women who collect old bikes?

Hey! 👋 Die-hard retro biker here – maybe just because I’m old though and can’t be doing with wheels bigger than 26” 😂

Stateside at the mo’ otherwise I would definitely have taken my little Patriot to the Malverns.

This side of the pond 🇺🇸 my ride is even
older – tiny late 80s Offroad Sport.

    Levi’s 311s are good – nice shape 👍
    I also wear 711s as I have
no shape 😔 but like a skinny fit.

Fwiw, I’ve not worn cycling specific shorts for years – jeans or cut-offs ftw but that may be because I rarely sit down 😂

Interesting thread and cheers @blokeuptheroad for your insight. I crashed into a tree last Christmas, landing awkwardly with a loud crack in my left knee and figured I’d damaged my MCL – in the States at the time so self-treated with duck tape and a Walmart knee brace 🙄 On return to the UK a month later my physio diagnosed an ACL tear with a positive anterior drawer test. I was referred for an MRI with a view to repair but the request was refused due to my age 😬 I was given the opportunity for an Ortho referral but as I spend 50% of my time Stateside I figured I’d stick with the physio route.

Fast forward 6-7 months and I’m still riding MTB and BMX with a knee brace and keeping up the strengthening exercises but the intermittent limping is getting me down and I’m starting to notice quads wasting on the injured side. Any exercise advice would be much appreciated – I’m back in the States right now so keeping pretty active with yard maintenance, but have noticed my knee giving way more when I don’t have the brace on (reluctant to use it too much unless I’m riding as I don’t want to become totally reliant on it).

Good to know @sprootlet – thank you 👍 Stateside at the mo and I know there are quite a few places over here that stock the Donjoy.

Cheers @sprootlet 👍 – those Ossur braces look pretty substantial (I’m using a cheaper hinged brace which does give support but is quite cumbersome).

Oooh good to hear of another ACL buddy/victim.  Did you have a repair Tasha?  I tore mine in the States last Christmas on my backyard trails – I blame the Walmart bike 😂 (it went to a yard sale afterwards).  Sadly due to my age they won’t consider a repair (or even an MRI) in the UK but I’ve managed to get back riding (albeit in a brace) with a regular physio regime to keep the strength.

Last week I went as far as deleting the Twitter app from my phone. Quite a turn around for someone who used to be a daily user.

Me too @kelvin . . . before all this ‘X’ nonsense started.  Was finding a lot of the chat on there pretty negative and Insta suits me better as I don’t read, I just look at the pictures ;)

Incidentally, anyone know how to remove my (dead) Twitter link from my profile here and replace it with Insta?

Oooh cheers for the heads up – I must follow her on Insta now that I’ve made the leap from Twitter/X.  I too raced against Rachel (in the loosest sense of the word) at Aberystwyth’s Conquer the Cliff back in 2016 – as a serial DH wannabee, my first and only DH race.  I came 12th (out of 13 🤔) but it’s the taking part that counts, right? 🤣 She was super cool though and happy to pose for pics with the old lady 😎

Hey y’all! Ageing, injured, long time forum member here – still lurking and riding (just) but rarely post now – no particular reason but I think maybe due to the advent of social media apps like Twitter where I could get my rock/metal/biking/news/USophilia fix all in one place. Finally managed to ditch the bird (what is going on over there?) and enjoying Instagram far more (even though all the dog and cat vids are eating my bandwidth 😅).

Anyone remember the Budweiser and doughnut rides we did back in the early 2Ks at Cwmcarn/Forest of Dean? Actually I’m not sure there was any beer involved, maybe it was just doughnuts 😋, but I do remember getting into trouble with one or two of the male posters for daring to suggest a women’s meet up.

I ride mainly BMX now – nowhere near as rad as it sounds, it’s just easier to carry a 20” er up a couple of flights of stairs in a knee brace, now that we live in an apartment over here (although I do have a lovely early Orange Patriot that I’m happy to wrestle up and downstairs when it’s dry enough not to drop mud on the carpets).  We also have a cabin in North Georgia, US where we spend 50% if our time (and I spend 99% of my time digging backyard trails and generally playing in the dirt 😛).

Oh and @Rona, we’ll need pics of that Spider 😎 I had a lovely orange Tazer back when I had two functioning knees – bought from new, sold it, bought it back, sold it again and tried to get it back again only to learn that the shock mount had snapped 😭
