Mike – mech yes, but surely not the shifter.

Hora – for 32-11, I’d have thought. But it does seem like a shite load of money!

    Thanks Mike.

1 x front shifters are certainly a niche market!

I meant though, the RH Zee shifter says 1×10 speed. why not simply 10 speed.

Hi there. Thanks for all the help.

It’s a full bouncer. 6″ Norco. I don’t know how the sus design works re a lot / little chain growth.

Having googled and read, I think an XT (or SLX) might be the way forwards to allow for chain growth and also for a future T-Rex. I like the idea of a secret granny but, to my mind, why not keep ‘proper’ 2×10 + bash for a while? That allows me to upgrade to N/W and T-Rex in the future. It also means I only need a bash, cassette, chain, shifter and mech.

I’d prefer to run 1×10 with a T-Rex but, like I said, funds are tight.

I’ll keep an eye on the classifieds. I’m happy to go second hand and the £’s go further.

    Three more questions.

    1) Are all cassettes T-Rex-able? If not, what recommendations?

    2) Do I need single ring chain bolts to add a bash or will the regular bolts work? Does it depend on the bash ring?

    3) I understand why the rear mech would be 1×10 (chain growth) but are shifters 1,2,3 x 10? Why would they be single ring specific?

    Thanks again

    Thank for the replies.

I think I may order that bit richie (thanks) but to the UK. I have family coming over in December. Otherwise, it will be an expensive bit after postage.

I’ve used the coin method before but it’s not the ‘pushing’ part that’s too small. It’s the bit that screws into the crank to keep it there.

Are SRAM cassettes better for Pro II hubs? Will a 10 speed SRAM slot straight on to the freehub too?

Although I could be persuaded otherwise, I’m pretty set on Zee mech and shifters. That’s only based on positive reviews and, like I said, it’s DH(-ish) on a budget orientation.

My set up’s 50/50 Shim and SRAM. Could go either way! What’s your opinion?

I like the look of Zee. It matches the bike in a mini-DH type way. I have Shimano on my Inbred.

I’d still need the same bits, wouldn’t I, if I go to SRAM or shimano.

I’ve a Catlike Leaf and although I don’t enduro race, I bought it with a view to ‘slowly climb up, fly down” riding.

I live in Thailand so need a cool helmet and it certainly is. It’s very light for the coverage it gives. It looks and feels like a much more expensive helmet, both in terms of the retention system, the quality of the finish and the attention to detail.

The one gripe I have is the plastic bits that are on the straps, under the ears kept coming apart. A little piece of blu-tac sorted that but annoying nonetheless.

Daniel – I am selling but to a friend.

If he says ‘no’ then I’ll be selling but they won’t be back in the UK until January!

I’ll let you know the outcome.

    Happily not an expensive mistake.

Bought a super-mincy carbon hardtail from the classifieds here. It had 80mm of travel, a riding position like the TdF bikes and made you feel like you were being beaten up when you rode it over anything bumpy.

Luckily, for my marriage, it didn’t cost much at all to sell it and get something more suitable. It took me 9 months before I gave in and started looking for a replacement.

A wonderful summer but it’s too hot to do much riding here in Asia at the height of summer. A perfect 25 deg here in the evenings at the moment </smug>

I’m a firm believer in hard tails giving people with less experience, better ‘training’. You’ll understand exactly what the bike’s doing, why and what you need to do with your body to stop you falling off / going slowly.

As someone who’s pretty fresh to mtb’ing, I guess you’re also pretty fresh to maintenance. Full sus bikes need more of that!

If I were you, I’d get a bike like either of these (honestly, if I had the money, I’d buy one for myself). The Bfe in particular will take quite a hammering. Is very well specced. Dammit. Wish I had a spare 1k! Plus, that 200 can get you a skills course, bike holiday etc.

Also, should you get bitten by the riding bug hard, bikes like these hard tails are easy to justify keeping whilst you add a full sus, a road bike, a CX bike, a single speed…….. ;)

New to me 4 months ago and it’ll be mine until either it breaks or, more likely, I do.

*although Father Christmas will hopefully make it 1×10, N/W + clutch mech.

My wife’s due with number 2 in a couple of weeks. She’s taught him there’s a “baby burva” in his Mammy’s tummy. She’s also taught him there’s “Daddy juice [beer] and cake” in Daddy’s tummy! Something he likes to tell strangers!

Yeah one of ours has had a couple of grommet operations, my wife says holding what feels like a lifeless body as they fall asleep is awful.

MCPH Jr had open heart surgery at 5 months. They put him to sleep in my wife’s arms and had to, quite literally, prise her arms open to take him to theatre.

Unless they don’t have any 26″ 2009 stumpjumper chainstays left.

…and are, perhaps unfairly, trying to get out of giving you a whole new bike. I guess they wouldn’t be able to give you a 650b frame without also giving you a wheelset, maybe tapered forks etc.

    Keep us updated OP.

Branstons pickle (in Asia it’s £4 a jar – worth every penny).

XT disc brakes. W(hy)TF was I a HOPE fanyboy?

Mountain biking socks. I’d always worn normal sports socks. What a difference!

That sounds amazing but, as someone who’s never had a go on a fancy road bike and certainly not a proper aero frame at a velodrome, how tough is it? Is 50kmph (ish) an easily attainable speed for most of us but much more impressive to keep up for 60 minutes?

For any of you velodromists, could you ride at 50 for, say, 10 minutes easily enough?

Living in Thailand, Jokelys are very jokey. Absolutely rubbish. However, the same as you, I don’t want to wear my real ones riding.

I’m fed up with the glasses breaking so frequently. I’m going to try some proper riding specs (but cheapy ones) from CRC or similar next.

I’ve just gone the other way but do understand you OP.

Having owned and loved some great hardtails over the years, I got rid of a Rocky Mountain HT XC machine and in it’s place have a 6″ FS – A Norco Fluid. A similar bike to the Five.

I have a bad feeling that my next crash will be worse on the FS than it was on a hard tail. I don’t think it’s the speed that makes things exciting, it’s the nearing the edge of control that does. This is faster on a DH orientated bike than a hardtail. It’s faster on say a Chameleon than a 90mm forked, lightweight hardtail. Therefore, I understand your thinking; it makes sense to me. I’m only 30 but see myself swapping the Norco for a shorter travel FS in 5+ years after enjoying the extra speed I have at the moment.

I don’t know if a hardtail would slow you down and keep you safer. Something like an SC Tallboy seems to fit the bill for what you described.

When I get a new bike (new to me or properly new), I make a tiny scratch on the bottom of the bb outer.

I remember years ago, I had a new frame and was a fraid of doing a jump I’d done previously in case I damamged the bike. Was persuaded to make the mark then it’s no longer perfect and you can just enjoy it.

I bought a brother and an endless ink system (3 colour reservoirs and 1 black on the side if the machine). It doesn’t look pretty but ink costs almost nothing. £2 for 200ml.

    Something similar to this

Yep. Check the plugs s (power and data) are properly pushed in.

Next step is an HDD enclosure (or put it inside a desktop). It might be buggered, but I’d be surprised / you’d be unlucky, in my experience.

I quite like it. There’s no such thing as the wrong weather, just the wrong clothing.

I often ride shorter routes in the rain but, with riding from my doorstep, sometimes a massive downpour is enough to send me running for my jersey etc.

Toolbox* for me. The bikes are lucky enough to live under the stairs but tools are all outside in the utility room.
