ive been thinking of doing a long weekend with my 9yr old. have not mentioned it to her mum tho, but she is far more skilled than her mother and i could happily have 3 days of cruising reds / easier blacks with her somewhere, with the odd bit of resort side off piste…

yes as shermer75 says, pubs around Smithfields Market are open in the mornings.

i used to work at Farringdon and the pubs were always busy on my way in in the morning, absolutely packed at dinner time, but then really quiet by teatime, and closed on weekends!!

You’d have to be the unluckiest person in the world to buy a bike from chain reaction when there’s not a sale on.

this bike is so sorted in every department i doubt they’ll ever need to discount em! i hope im wrong.

I’m super pumped for Les Arcs, already eyeing up slack country routes on fatmap. The 20yr old me would have hated the idea of staying Club Med. The 39 year old me is looking forward to it. I did it a few years ago in L2A and that was probably my best week on snow ever. This one is in Arc 2000 so the snow should be decent, hopefully the queues will be small, and the sun will be bluebird!
The big question now is do I want a new pair of skis?…

Same age as you and did my first club med last season. bloody loved it. we were in La Plagne, the the weather and the snow conditions were absolutely perfect all week and i have never done more mileage in a single week before! i was dubious about going in ski school, especially as i ended up in a group without any others from our party, but it was great, basically like having a private guide all day everyday and we hardly set foot on piste all week! only 5 of us, all about the same standard, so it was flat out every day and never waiting around.

the hotel was alright, cannot fault the location for door step skiing but it was a little bit removed form civilization. the restaurant/food/bar/kids clubs/ski lockers etc were all spot on, just the rooms let it down a bit. We have stayed in some pretty salubrious chalets in the past so a very dated box room about the size of my downstairs bog on a noisy corridor was disappointing – it didnt really bother me tbh, im not that fussy (plus i was super knackered every night!!) but gave the women something to complain about.

Definitely gonna use them again this winter tho, weve even sold it to a few others too so just need to find one that ticks all the boxes…

ive not eaten meat for a year now but i dont consider myself vegetarian. the treatment of animals is one thing but i personally stopped eating meat in an attempt to cut out pies, pasties and sausage rolls which were my biggest vice! but also fast food, takeaways and processed meats etc. always said if i fancy a bacon butty then ill just have a bacon butty. but so far i haven’t caved in and now i never fancy a a bacon butty.

never realised how good a plain old margherita pizza was before! always used to load it up with all kinds of shite – and i swear the veggie versions of chilli and bolegnese we make now is much nicer than the old fleshy stuff.

    What’s for lunch?

    “Veggie chilli.”

    Oh, you’re vegetarian? (and we’re away…)

why not just reply ‘Chilli’? and avoid all the nonsense?

both my kids (5 & 9) have gone through a Frog Tadpole, Frog 48, Frog 55 and the eldest is now on a Frog 69.

skipped the Frog 52 and 62.

sold the tadpole and the 48 which pretty much funded the 69.

working away from from home i usually go about once a week – certainly in winter anyway. i also take the kids to see all the big releases on a weekend. i have vitality health plan that awards me a free ticket per week which is useful in London, then the local Vue to home is £4.99 for any film at any time. being such a regular means i cannot abode a poorly behaved audience! you kindda expect it at Toy Story or something but went to see Once Upon a Time in Hollywood at an Odeon in Kingston recently and it was diabolical. people openly conversing – not even whispers, cracking of beer cans, late arrivals, early darters, crisp packets, glaring phones… absolutely spoiled it for me.

Also never buy any of their wares!

went last night; rode Reformation, landrover, wire in the blood, flinty, wee willie winkie then sacked it off missing out rip van winkle from my planned route… Redlands is definitely worth the extra 15mins.

maybe on another day, on another bike i might enjoy it more. my sentinel is completely the wrong bike for surrey full stop. that Landrover was probably my favourite, with that sketchy drop gap stepdown into berm bit! and flinty is quite nice but the hike back to civilisation from the bottom finished me off!

i may be wrong but im assuming its Reformation not Retribution. i found reformation easy enough.

some good info here, have drawn up a route to try. did ride over to Ranmore once before from Micklham but it was a lot of plod for little reward so good to have a proper route to try. Mickleham area doesnt really cut it for me and slinging it down to Coldharbour (from Leatherhead) is a bit far for a quick blast…

must say i only read up about the tate murders after watching it and listening to Robbie Collins gushing about it on the kermode pod. now i really want to see it again! i did attempt to watch a snide CAM stream but its awful given the clarity of the original!

you could do a loop of the north end of the lake. head over to Wray Castle, wander south along the the shore to bank barn jetty or the ferry house to catch a boat over to brockhole then mooch back up to ambleside. low level and super flat & easy.

ha. you still get to commit mass murder of baddies. but just letting people go when you have interrogated them or not robbing folk who you just rescued from bandits etc, seeiing if it pans out any different….

amazing how much faster you progress the 2nd time when you have no need to just explore all the time!

I hate christenings. not just the religious connotations, but the cynic in me just see’s a grubby exercise in obtaining cash and gifts for the new brat – but id probably just go along with what the mrs wants.

there does not seem to be many christenings these days which is good, but in the past ive just turned up at the reception thing and skipped church… the little baby is never arsed.

what i wanna know is what makes the house guest such a prick ??

i started working away about the same time i had kids! :D

over 10 years now. mostly in central London or surrounding areas so usually enough going on to keep you busy. i always used to travel on trains but now i drive which means i can get about a bit by myself when im away and i always keep my bike with me. I also tend to join the local squash club to where im based, enter the internal leagues or play on the team if they have them. the social side of squash is fantastic for meeting new people

playstation too. basically act like im a teenager all week. afterwork i either ride (summer) or play squash (winter) pint in the bar after. back to the digs for tea and mash the PS4 till i pass out. maybe once a month go into town or do something different.

playstation and squash racket travel overseas too. not so much the bike.

the temptation to hammer the ale does subside after the first few years!

id suggest borrowing somebody else’s shoes and pedals for a bit if your only clipless curious, rather than investing in an expensive setup.

then when you realise clips are shite you go running back to flats it wont have cost owt.

    Can I get?

No you chronic simpleton. The person you asked is employed to get it for you. 😠

i had this one ready to go from the beginning but kayak beat me to it.

riles me so bad when i hear this, and its getting worse! likewise OMG.

M6 gantry signs is good one too. but what kills me is when ts says “Long Delays between J20 – J22” like im supposed to know where the eff J20 is along 230 miles of motorway!!

    also, men with Umbrellas.

i went for a day once when i was in Milan for work. hire shop (at top of Aosta gondola) wouldnt let me hire anything other than a full DH bike when i told them i wanted to ride the park and descend to the valley floor a few times! there wasnt that much to warrant it on the ones i rode, id have been much happier on my own trail bike and could’ve pedalled up a bit higher too.

so yeah, defo be reet for a day on an Enduro bike.

i never did make it to Redlands 2 years ago but then stopped coming to Surrey for while… Im back now tho and finally explored the area last night. based in Leatherhead i have mostly been riding Peaslake again after quickly getting bored of Box Hill.
Bloody brilliant. i like the flow lines on Pitch and Winterfold but great to find some steep tech down south finally (tbf there is some at Hindhead but its in abundance here) and it does have its shere of flow trails too. shat myself on that near vertical shoot onto the fire road at the bottom of ‘Going Japanese* (*i think?) plus Holmwood is half the journey time for me. cant wait to explore more.
