Just to really p*ss you off:

It's my wife's 40th next week. To celebrate (this was her idea!) we are going to Spain for 10 days where I will be riding my bike and she will be chilling / doing what she wants. The only rule is I can't ride on her actual birthday!

Ahem – IPR ? (aka Copyright) You are effectively republishing. Not exactly my field, more like the field next to it that I can see from my field. Might get yourself in trouble here.

(not having a go, just trying to be helpful)

I'm not republishing. I'm just providing an alternative source for free to download information.

I'm not worried so you shouldn't….

    Link up with these guys?

Already aware of them cheers. Just thought a more user friendly version would be handy?

Done the Avalanche enduro there twice and ridden the normal red in 'orrible conditions.

For the best ride I'd do two laps – one taking the red options and one taking the black. Don't bother with the loop up to the mast unless it is completely sunny with no wind and you like fireroads!

If you are getting chain suck it ain't lack of lubricant its fecked chain ring(s). The muck and lack of lube just brings it out.

    I'm managing on a dual core with 2Gb ram…

More oomph would probably help as the preview can be very jerky (using Vegas Movie Studio) when editing full 1080p footage. aprt from that it's ok.

Rendering is always gonna take a while but you can leave it to it and **** off and do something else…. maybe a bike ride even?

If you're gonna do a job do it properly.

So UST rims and UST tyres = better than any bodged up system

No offence to Jo as he can certainly draw but Mint sauce just doesn't do it for me. I just skip staight past that page of MBUK.

Another video added today – some XC with Go Pro chest and helmet mounted footage in very poor light conditions – foggy, cloudy and damp: http://www.mountainbikerides.co.uk/blog/?p=406

    Mines a Sony HDRCX105E

Small, simple and good quality. Cost me 300 quid ish

I wish I had a HD Sony Handycam to make make my camera look as good as a Contour

I wish we had some of your footage for comparison? ;)

Trouble is we'd need to record the same run on two cams and then encode in exactly the same way for a direct comparison.

Maybe you and I can do this when next we meet?

Oh and be aware whichever of the two you buy you will need a beefy PC to edit the footage…

Mad Pierre, nice vid's, that's pretty much what I want it for… some head/chest footage and some static filming. Cool.

Cheers. Note: while some of the static footage is from the Go Pro I've got a HD Sony Handycam that I use for most of those shots so that I can pan and zoom etc. With that combined with the Go Pro it's pretty easy to make the vids you've seen.

MAd Pierre, nice footage. Looks like a chilled day out. It was a well chosen tune too.

Cheers. Don't forget to scroll down there are (currently) three vids on there all containing Go Pro HD footage…..

I'm thinking about getting a GoProHD so am reading this with interest. How do you set it up / align it? Is there any sort of screen on it or a view finder or anything?

No viewfinder – that was my main worry when I first got it but it hasn't been an issue. I've used the "ask a mate if it looks like its pointing in about the right direction" technique and it seems to have worked every time! It being such a wide angle lense helps.

I recently made this decision and went for the Go Pro HD. Bought it from Pinkbike.com – saved about 100 quid on UK prices and they mark it up nicely to avoid Mr Customs :)

The main reasons for my decision:

    Price
More mounting options (particularly the chest option)

So far I'm very impressed. Easy to use and quality is excellent. You can see some of my early test footage here: http://www.mountainbikerides.co.uk/blog/

Ditto to goldenwonder. We've been avoiding The Pines all winter. The Kitchener Trail is the worst thing that has happened there for years. What was once pristine singletrack in places is now a 5 foot wide mudfest! :(

There's still good off piste singletrack to be had (with local knowledge) but to be honest the other woods to the south are better these days….

Just bung a little sticker or bit of tape over the hole.

Contact rob@thecoolbus.co.uk for a guide for Les Arcs (and he'll do your airport transfer if you need). Cracking guide. IMO you need one for Les Arcs to ride all the good stuff hassle free.

Dunno about a Mazda but in my Zafira it's just:

Both back rows of seats down. Old curtains deployed to keep car clean.

    Drop or remove seatpost.
    Remove front wheel.
Wedge back wheel between slid forward rear seats and door post.
Bungee round top of seatpost to loops for attaching these (already present in Zafira).

    Job's a good un

No movement. No brackets required. Done in a minute or two.

What you using to edit the GoPro footage?

Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Pro but it's proving to be a pain in the arse and I wouldn't recommend it! I need a chunkier PC too….

Great stuff – what's the music track?

    The Snow by Audio Bullys

Is it possible to point the camera further upwards when on the chest mount to capture a bit more of the trail?

Yes. Already planning that for next time. This was the first attempt.

    £570 – ouch – must be good s/w.

Errr… no its not the full Vegas Pro. Platinum Pro is £52 quid ish from Amazon ATM. You can download the trial version from Sony to try first.

What memmory card are you using .

    A Verbatim 32GB class 6

    Sony Vegas Platinum Pro.

Only trouble I have is I now need a better PC to handle HD editing from this and my new HD camcorder a bit faster!

First one I had I washed a few times at 40 and the taped seams came off. Endura replaced it under warranty but I've stuck to 30 with the new one to be on thw safe side and it's still ok after a good few washes.

Waiting for mine to arrive. 4 weeks is about the norm for delivery.

I have ordered mine having had a look at some of my mates and you won't get a better light for that kind of money.

Mine will just be a backup but last night I rode with 5 people who all have them. Alongside my L&M HID they looked a bit yellower and didn't have the focused spot mine has but they were just as bright and are plenty good enough for night riding for about 150 quid less than mine!

My two young nephews have been getting into this MTB lark this year (and probably have a better idea of "cool" than any of you old farts! ;)

To them (and me in fact!) Sam Pilgrim doing a back flip or Gee Atherton flying off a drop looks way "cooler" in a mag than some old fart in lycra plodding up a hill. Having said that anything to do with bikes is "cool" at the moment with them (that puts a smile on my face despite the constant fixing of bikes!).

Anyway they are quite capable of pedalling up hills but prefer the jumpy / DH days we have much more. Not because it's "cool" I don't think? Just cuz there's nowt more fun than getting some air!

Get a cat! You can leave it to its own devices while you go for a ride and save all the hassle (including carrying a bag of dogshit in your Camelbak!)
