Depends on what you want to achieve/what features you want?

I have had an original Go Pro for years. Am now waiting eagerly for the Go Pro 3 Black to land which I ordered as soon as they came out. Looking forward to the faster frame rates (for slow mo) and wireless remote the most out of new features….

I’ll have an original for sale as soon as the new one lands ;-)

I usually work from home Thursdays and go into the office Fridays which (today included) is usually very quiet. That way I avoid most of my colleagues for two out of 5 days!

Second snap was a stick through it at Drumlanrig, would have done any. First snap was the weird one: just pedalling slowly up a technical rocky climb when it went for no apparent reason. I’m still a bit suspicous of whether clutch mechs can handle the suspension action whilst pedalling under a lot of pressure?

M986 is the new direct mount. You’ll be wanting the M985.

I’ve snapped two M985s in two rides the last couple of weeks. Might stick with XT for a while….? :-(

I had an Orange one for years (the paint stayed on fine, it’s years since they had those problems). It’s still going strong and being thrashed by my teenage nephew.

Great all rounder. Not the lightest (mine was about 32 lbs) with air Pikes. But great geometry and feel.

Main reasons I got rid were to save weight (joined the carbon masses) and to get a seat tube that took a Reverb. Coves always had an odd 30.0 seat tube. Dunno if that’s changed?

I had the 19.5 and am just over 6ft.

benman I’m assuming your ‘steep’ trail is the dotted line to the west of this? Have looked down that hillside from the road but not ridden it…

    Yeah. Roughly there.

I’ll have a look at the Eyam route, thanks for that Mad Pierre. Your sites very good, I’m actually pretty local to you and used to play football for Asfordby!

Small world and all that. I grew up in Asfordby!

Hollow Brook? Better than the re-surfaced descent on the route? Will have to have a look next time I’m there? Not done it for ages.

This way into the back of Eyam is very short but fun: http://mountainbikerides.co.uk/photos/local-rides/the-peak-district/bakewell-robbos-50th/bakewell39-3002.html

Looks flat in the phot but is nice and steep in reality.

Mad Pierre’s route above is pretty good, but I’d detour up past the Riley Graves between points 1 and 2, otherwise you are missing a nice piece of downhill.

Yeah we usually do that but as the best DH option of the two past the graves is “cheeky” I didn’t include it in the route!

At Stainburn: on an easy bit of trail I stalled on a rock and went to put my foot down…. on nothing. I fell backwards towards stumps and pointy rocks. After about 8ft of freefall (one of those slow mo, this is gonna hurt ones) I landed on a particularly big, pointy rock right in the middle of my back.

Inside my Camelbak the plastic box, lined with foam to protect the enclosed video camera (this was pre-Go Pro days) took the full impact.

It still **** hurt but I reckon it would have been a broken back….? The box was smashed to bits but the video camera was also ok!

Dark is always better than White at this time of year! Grit is grippier than limestone – especially when wet.

But… As I’ve not go the book to hand. This route on my site might suit? http://www.mountainbikerides.co.uk/routes/1-the-peak-district/12-eyam-a-bakewell.html

I’ve probably ridden my DH bike less this year than any other but not cuz I’ve gone off it – it’s just the way things have been.

In the past: Morzine area (loads of times), Whistler (3 times), Les Arcs, Alp D’Huez, Stile Cop, Hopton, Bringewood, Moelfre, Caersws, Cwmcarn, Ae etc etc etc

    I’ve never raced though.

Recently went to Antur Stiniog for the first time and I want to go back soon! First time on the DH bike since March!

    Sample Antur Stiog Video

Hopefully get to Whistler again next year?

Do you really feel you need to wash them after every ride?

What is it with some of you lot’s aversion to washing? All my mtb kit gets washed after every ride because it’s covered in sweat, muck, dust (sometimes!) and occasionally shit (assorted animals), blood and god knows what else…? It will stink if I don’t!

My 3/4 MT500 just go in with the rest on a normal wash. Bike gear needs to cope with getting shit up and washed regular else it ain’t bike gear.

    Why the big stupid helmets?

    It’s a DH with uplift…

Be more stupid not to wear them?

    MadPierre
    Full Member

It is bloody good fun and the uplift is very good too. There’s also a cafe and stuff at the bottom with brand new pump track and visitor centre under construction. XC trail is planned…. I reckon it’s gonna be the the daddy of (gravity) trail centres when it’s done. You already have to book weeks in advance to get on the uplift…. Easy to combine in a weekend with Coed-y or Betws trail centres.

Check out my Youtube channel for vids of the other trails there.

I reckon it might be a bit bleak on a wet and windy day though.

In (very) slight fairness to the chap the morning dew did make the first couple of runs that day feel a bit squirmy at the back end especially when you braked. He is obviously braking a lot, getting the squirm in turn causing him to panic and brake more and so spiralling towards a crash….

It’s not super steep but is a lot rougher/harder than it looks on film. Here’s (a slightly competent) one filmed by myself of the same on the same day:

Ok. Cheers. A bleed won’t be a problem. I’m swapping from Magura so have plenty of LHM fluid knocking about.

I was just wondering…. In the past I’ve not had to shorten a rear as the hose was about right (though I’ve not had the tape measure out yet for this setup).

er just use chain link pliers – they cost less than a chain cleaning brushed tool and it takes a couple of seconds.

if your cleaning your chain, your doing it at home and can take your chain off doing a ‘propper job’, brushed tools may be easier but they are not better imo. I own both – but rarely use teh brushed tool. already got those. It’s not quicker to remove, clean an re-thread a chain than use a scrubber and never will be. And I’m not always at home. The most important times are those long weekends away where it’s only really the chain that gets cleaned between ride and pub and next days ride.

WD40 the chain, bung it in the car and get a pint in.

    You need more efficiency
No tools needed 2-3 secs at most to disconnect the link, maybe 10 secs to put it back

If you can do a SRAM 10 speed power lock with your bare (bear?!) hands then you are a better man than me. 9 speed yeah no problem but not the 10 speed ones.

And more than 10 secs to thread the chain through all mechs, chain device etc for sure!

My chain would be clean and I’d have downed my first pint while you’re still messing about. I’d bet that pint on it!

Wrong on both counts… It’s easier than fannying around with a scrubby machine, and also cleans it better

(you can do the old gilette test on this if you like- machine clean first then shoogle in paraffin, see how much more crap comes off)

I really can’t be arsed with that much faffing. Especially to prove a point to a STWer! So we’ll have to agree to disagree.

I can have it cleaned quicker than I can lay my hands on the tool to get my 10 speed link apart so….

I reckon it’s more down to the de-greaser than the method anyway. As I said earlier the expensive, citrus, cycle specific stuff is a load of shite

    MadPierre
    Full Member

Removing your chain is far too much faffing about just to clean it! Doesn’t get any better results than a scrubby machine thing either!

I’m guessing they’ll be here http://www.rootsandrain.com/race1606/2012-oct-21-pearce-cycles-charity-gravity-enduro-hopton/photos/ when the photographers get round to it (only the podiums currently)

I’m on my 3rd Park one – they’ve finally changed the design of the clips that hold the lid on so hopefully this one won’t fall to bits there?

Does a great job with the correct de-greaser. Cycle specific, eco-friendly, citrus stuff is shite and overpriced!

After much experimenting I have found this stuff: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_700554_langId_-1_categoryId_255222 is the daddy for getting it clean!

Only went down for the Sunday Enduro (no practice – just on sighted the race!) and it was really good. The weather definitely helped.

The (accurate and efficient) timing first go certainly put two years of other enduros to shame!

I was blowing big time on them climbs in the stages. **** hard work! Alright plodding on the transitions but trying to ride uphill fast bloody kills me! Need to get fitter!!

Mad Pierre – that sounds a good price. I’ll hang on for now and see how the Shadow+ I fitted goes on it’s own.

    Hmmm.. 60 quid posted?

    It’s a 36 – 38 one in black.

All the parts are brand new and unused apart from the backplate. This is because I had it on my Mojo HD and then had to buy a whole new device just to get the Mojo specific backplate. I swapped all the bits.

My email is in my profile if you want to discuss further…?

You’ll be better off with a 26 than a 24 for the little ring. You don’t need the smaller one as you can have 36 at the back.

I find running 2×10 there is less “stick in middle then bail to granny” instead it’s switch to granny earlier and use the block sensibly.
