I have run both the Xt and Zees in the Alps and in Scotland. Both are pretty awesome brakes to be honest.

There are some very nit picky comments above that i don’t really agree with. If you are looking for brakes for big descents then obviously the Zees should be your first choice, its what they are designed for. Yep the XT will do, and yep i survived a week in the alps with them and didn’t die but there were more than a few occasions i wanted some more stopping power and modulation and thats exactly what the Zees give me.

They are not particularly heavy, and tbh i am not sure what the lever quality or lack of refers to but they are set up really well for 1 finger braking ( as are the XT to be fair).

My choice would be, for general trail riding and some big days thrown in then XT any day.

For alpine and predominately mountainous terrain then Zee. Hands down.

Had a few rides now with the FAST damper, on the first ride i was a bit underwhelmed. I stuck to the TF Tuned settings and i changed nothing.

On the second ride i dropped the HSC one click and it changed the fork completely, such a good initial feeling with loads of support when you hit the big stuff.

I then had a wee play with the settings now that i had my base tune and there is a fair bit of change in each click of the compression dials, sometimes you don’t think much is happening with other forks when you change the settings but these now have a very distinct feeling with each click.

So far i am pretty happy 🙂

Scotroutes, yep thats what they said they were going to do 2 weeks ago. Bring a company in to do it. Every time i call it seems to be the same excuses over and over.

I am a very patient guy but this is getting beyond a joke

twang, i would love to mate but i am being completely messed about by Vauxhall. They have had it for 4 weeks now and apparently the injectors are getting removed today 😕

They are either very incompetent or there is something i don’t know about that has caused all these delays.

I have all the carpet, lights flooring and extras ready to fit so i need the van back 8)

    Well done 🙂

There is a known fault with some models of Vivaro where water can get into the engine bay and sit on top, corroding the injectors. I already paid £800 to get one changed before the others went. But hopefully I can make some headway now 8)

Hey twang, my van has been in the garage for the last few weeks as Vauxhall are finally replacing all the injectors. Its been an absolute epic getting to this stage.
I got one side carpeted and the roof ready to roll. Hopefully when I get home I’ll get stuck in. I have had one problem after another with the engine but hopefully that’s sorted now.
Keep the updates coming, keeps me motivated to get stuck in

Mmm will do. It might just be a case of once I noticed it then it’s in my head while I am riding.

I feel it quite a bit when riding. It looks like 5mm roughly when I move it side to side by hand.

Cheers hob nob, i had some problems with my pikes so i have sent these in to Tf tuned for the FAST damper to be fitted as well as the repairs.

Stoner, if you are using handles the trick is to wind them off with the same hands/rotation as you wind them on with.

Took me ages to work out something so simple.

I f i was in your boat i would look at doing some self-employed work fitting VW and other vans. There is a big market for good conversions. Some of the quotes i got for doing my vivaro were bordering on the obscene.

A good reliable tradesman is worth his weight in gold. Word of mouth will keep you busy if you turn up on time and answer calls. Oh and do a good job obviously 🙂

Northwind, i’m after a bit of advice. Ill be living like a tramp in my van on the thursday night and saturday night. Parking at Glentress with access to a shower suits me but i am not sure if its allowed. Obviously will pay any parking but is overnighting ok?

    Cheers

Did the forestry commission ok this event after consultation? and were all parties not invited by Aaron to meet up and have a walk round the trails in question so that any concerns could be raised and changes put in place if need be?

I ride a fair bit at Pitmedden and so many of the trails are eroded and well used. I doubt this will have much of an impact as the warmer weather is on the way and the vegetation grows back. Which it will.

Plus guys it is completely understandable objecting to events but by persistently coming online and harassing Aaron after he has done what has been asked of him by the Forestry commission then it appears to be nothing more than a witch hunt. I don’t think it is but it is how it comes across. Your very valid points are being ignored because of the nature of your posts.

Cheers cumbrianmonkey. I tried to find that perfect fit between too tight and too loose but maybe i am just too ham fisted.

Ill have a play again tomorrow and see how i get on 😉

    Cheers

What i wanted to know was if the damper is a decent upgrade for the price or if its just a case of adding high speed damping with a new shiny knob.

Im calling TF Tuned on another matter tomorrow so i was going to have a chat about having this fitted. But as with everything else i just wanted some real world experience.

Bloody hell you lot, talk about making an easy job hard work.

    Repair kit.

In the mountains i have had a couple of spectacular blowouts, usually from smacking my rear wheel into a water bar at speed. Never had to use anything but these. I still carry a tube and tire boot for emergencies but these work and stay working. I have a Hans Damph i use now and again that has 2 of these in and i am sure they will last the life of the tyre.

No need to take the tyre off, bang these in, wait 5 minutes to seal solid. inflate and ride.

Don’t thanks me all at once 🙂

Hob nob, mine appeared to have cracks after the first ride but nothing ever came of them. The tyre is running well after a solid week in the alps and a few months riding.

Cheers for the heads up guys, Paul I have the 3c maxxterra version 2.3.

A bit thinner than I am used to but up front its doing it’s job superbly. Not sure what they are like on the rear but I have a new nobby nic on to try out at the moment. I doubt I’ll ever trust it near sharp rocks though. But it seems a decent enough trail tyre.

Went to pull the trigger on one of these and Next Day Tyres are all out. Word has got out 🙁

    Damn you Northwind.

Tell you something though you did convince me to try something other than Hans Dampf for a change. High Roller 2 fitted on black betty at the moment. Very very impressed.

I don’t know the exact speed but the pain they inflict when caught in a hailstorm and they are smashing off your face is verging on the ridiculous. I will remember the agony for a good while 🙂

Wooly, exactly what I have just done. Yep a 2.5mm Allen key spins freely so it must be the adjuster knob. (Hopefully).

i popped one on the rear the other day and only have 1 ride on it. Pretty decent.

I wouldn’t even dream of putting one upfront a some oddballs have dome on MTBR.

The deciding factor for me will be when i ride some steep rocky runs, if it holds up well t that type of riding then i will be convinced.

But as a bog standard trail tyre it seems to do the trick.

Good news on the banshee, as you could probably tell i absolutely love mine.

What shock has it got? if its a CCDB Inline then it really is worth a bit of fiddling. Patient fiddling 🙂

I was very sceptical with such a huge amount of adjustability but it actually works very well if you take the time to play with it. There is a couple of set up guides on the cane creek site to follow.

Regardless, i really think you made a great choice 🙂

you want these i think. Specs

Interchangeable lenses are the way ahead. Shades in the trees are just plain weird. yellow for grew dim days. Clear for mud and shades for the sun. Easy peasy 🙂

Not particularly to be honest, the bite point has remained pretty constant. I bled them from new as i had to swap the levers around as they were european style. But i could not get the lever close enough to the bar for my liking so i had to get some fluid out. Since then they have felt very consistant.

The lack of a tool free reach adjust does not matter to me either. It might to some but it stops me fiddling with stuff that just works 🙂

I have no experience of the hopes but i have been running a set of the zees for a few months.

I absolutely love them tbh, very good modulation but with a bit more pressure i come to a dead stop. I know what you mean about them being replaced in a couple of years but i got them pretty cheap from a german site so i am not bothered.

Ace brakes. Same weight as the SLX with way better feel.

Only downside is my stock of brakepads are now redundant 🙁
