From the 12th August onwards its the people with the shotguns that have the right…
Even if you are a grouse riding a bike.
MacavityFree MemberThe rest of the world values the finest things in British manufacturing more than Britain does, thats why they own a large chunk of British manufacturing.
Reid and Taylor in Langholm make some of the best cloth / fabrics for some of the finest suits (British, Italian etc) in the world.

They just happen to be Indian owned.Kyowa Hakko Kirin of Japan has bought ProStrakan of Galashiels.

Tomatin was the first Scotch whisky distillery to be wholly owned by a Japanese company.
Scottish Power, a fine Spanish company.
British Energy, a proud French company.MacavityFree MemberIf it is Reynolds 753, then the wall thickness of the tubes is fairly thin. In particular the chainstays are only 0.6mm thick (very thin).
The spacing of the rear drop-outs will probably be 126mm. If you are tempted to try to pull them out to 130mm then do not be surprised if the chainstays then crack.

MacavityFree MemberBy bringing your ankle up and forward (dropping your toes) you will be able to compensate for having your foot too far back on the pedal (The conventional wisdom of ball of foot over pedal spindle, does not suit everyone).
http://www.stevehoggbikefitting.com/blog/2011/04/power-to-the-pedal-cleat-position/Being able to drop your heels relys on good flexibility.
But pedaling for exteneded periods of time relys a great deal on the muscles in the legs above the knees, rather than the smaller muscles below the knees (ankling)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNpvASJDpmsMacavityFree Member“Plate” possibly a Richards Screw plate (if an intertrochanteric fracture), which is two elaborate pins plus a plate and two or more screws. The surgeon will not want to alarm your father too much about the amount of metal that will be used, surgical steel.
The mobility question depends on the amount of physiotherapy he gets and how soon he gets hydrotherapy. Splashing about in the water is incredibly effective, even though getting in and out of the water is horrible.
But crutches for a few weeks does mean that it is very easy to forget how to walk. Which is why the hydrotherapy is so important, he will get to walk in the pool.
The surgeon will / might labour the point about only an 80% success rate etc etc…. poor blood supply the the hip etc etc…. but the point about infection is very important. In general let what the surgeon says just wash over your and your fathers head, they are used to dealing with hip fractures is much older and less active people who smoke and will inevitably have complications.
Having the operation as soon after the break is big factor on the success of the operation.Do not have a look at pictures of Jewett nail plates or even the Richards Screw, they are big and ugly.
MacavityFree MemberThere are specialists that can clean , ultrasonic clean, the injectors.
This would mean taking out the old ones and cleaning them, then refitting them so they will be the original and therefore the right ones (if they were the right ones to start with).
How effective the cleaning is, can be variable.
Have a look in the yellow pages for diesel specialists in your area.MacavityFree MemberHave you considered moving to the south of England?

MacavityFree MemberIs there anything cheaper than using the bike frame or forks, with some tape and bits of cardboard as guide/ indicators?
MacavityFree Member“Need to get some new diesel injectors….”
maybe, but “some”…. I just wondered if it might be the fuel pump that is on the way out.
MacavityFree MemberWhen you buy wheels off Ebay you could be buying something that was repaired by this guy:
http://www.alloywheelrepairs.net/
Or you might be buying a secondhand car with these wheels even.

“What’s the difference between a 6061 aluminum hanger and a 7075
aluminum hanger and which material should I choose?
6061 hangers are more ductile than 7075 hangers but do not have 7075’s
tensile strength. A 6061 hanger will bend before it breaks. A 7075 hanger
will take a bigger hit than the 6061 but will fail catastrophically. In either case it is advisable to keep a spare with your bike.”MacavityFree Memberhttp://www.jobsite.co.uk/job/kers-coordinator-939595984?src=search

MacavityFree MemberIt is the extreme heat of the welding process that causes the annealing.
The weld will be the softest part of the frame after it is welded. There are a number of different types of welding wire to chose from 4043, 5356 etc. Not all of them are heat-treatable, some will not precipitation harden. The process of heat treating a bike frame (6061) would involve heating the whole frame (super saturated solid solution) then quenching in water. This would induce some distortion and would do little to stress relieve it.
Further heat would then be require to precipitate harden it, to get peak strength.“It is not easy to make materials that are both strong and tough. All the [aluminium] alloys have a higher strength and lower toughness than pure aluminium”
Materials engineering, science, processing and design. Michael Ashby, Hugh Shercliff, David Cebon. The precipitation hardening heating process (6061) is by coincidence at a similar temperature and time as that for powder coating.
A good weld needs as high a standard of weld preparation /cleanliness as possible to avoid contamination.
MacavityFree MemberIf aluminium breaks due to lack of ultimate tensile strength, then there will be yeild before failure. If there is just a crack with no deformation of the metal around the crack then it is less likely to be a lack of ultimate tensile strength.
Even on a new frame the weld is in the as cast condition (a weld is a casting) and the adjacent parent material in the heat affected zone (exposed to the harsh very high welding temperature) where the solution treated and aged wrought material (tube etc) has effectively decomposed. Then there is the parent material that has been unaffected by the welding.
So what type of heat treatment would sort this out?MacavityFree MemberWhen welding a crack in aluminium, steel, titanium the main problem is getting any contamination out of the crack. Cleanliness is the main problem in TIG welding.
For aluminium any contamination in the weld means even lower fracture toughness.
http://www.ndt-ed.org/EducationResources/CommunityCollege/Materials/Mechanical/FractureToughness.htmIf it is possible to clean the crack so that there is absolutely no dirt, oil etc then it is fairly simple to make a good repair.
Aluminium can be TIG welded or even Oxyacetylene welded.
http://www.youtube.com/user/tinmantech?blend=3&ob=5#p/u/0/aF1Srs_e1AwThe heat treatment of aluminium is of less concern than cleanliness.
MacavityFree MemberWhen aluminium corrodes it can expand with enough force to damage whatever is surrounding it:
http://pardo.net/bike/pic/fail-001/FAIL-102.htmlwhich is why when an aluminium seatpost corrodes into a frame, a fair bit of force or application of physics/engineering is required.
If you can get some liquid nitrogen. Then hold the frame upside down and put the seatpost in a container of liquid nitrogen (a pair of stout gloves might be a good idea). Take the seatpost out of the N2 and put it in a vice and twist, turn and pull and the seatpost should come out.
Tony Oliver has an idea in his book Touring Bikes. Put the frame / seatpost in a deep freeze for a few hours. Get some towels ready, that need to be soaked in some warm to hotish water. Take the frame out of the deep freeze put the seatpost in a vice, wrap the hot towels around the frame seat tube and the heat differential … might be enough to …. but I have never tried it.
The liquid nitrogen method is the easiest, if you can get some N2.

Dont twist too hard though:

you might be right.
MacavityFree MemberSoda blasting can be OK, with minimal effect on the aluminium.
