Thanks guys, I’m way out of touch and find RS a bit confusing.

Peter, I was looking at the 30TK Gold, which seems a better and lighter fork than the XC30?

Either way, I’ll research the Recon and Reba further. Getting a 100mm travel, 26″ wheel, and 1″ 1/8th straight steerer for the money seems harder. No rush though, happy to shop around.

    Cheers

Thanks for the suggestion. The Recon seems to be heavier than the 30 Gold TK? I’d prefer lighter. The Reba looks good, but quite a bit more expensive.

I’m coming 14 year old 1400g, 80mm XC forks. Fancy staying light, maybe upping to 100mm travel, and probably RockShox for ease of servicing and availability of spares.

26psi is low for tubes, especially with those tyres. I’d bet the slime is whats stopped you noticing any pinch flats…

I have to run 40psi to prevent pinch flats when playing around (ie jumping). Tend to stick with 35-40psi now anyway (and I do ok in the corners  ). Been using contis with tubes for over a decade and this has always been the case. I am switching to tubeless soon, promise :?

Thanks guys. Paul, looks just the ticket. Going to save it for September, give me a bit more time to get sorted, and the midges to **** off! 8)

    Thanks guys.

Eddie, sounds like I’ll be fine with what I have already. Can’t afford any bike-packing kit and already have two panniers that fit all my kit so will stick with them. If it’s THAT bad with midges I may wait until Octobers holiday though 8O

Got a Cotswold Outdoor near you?

They stock thinsulate lined North Face boots, and the Caribou’s, amongst others.

Personally I like the North Face Chilkat, toasty warm and good for this country as well.

@m360 – what do you use it for ? I tired it (it was offered free) but then deleted it. I use Calendar and Notes instead with sharing via iCloud account. Happy to re-visit.

I have the paid version now (£2.99 a month) so have it on my phone as well.

I use it for loads of stuff:

Clipping web pages, articles, notes etc for anything from stuff for Uni to gadgets for bikepacking, like a scrapbook of websites. It’s handy because when you clip an article, for example, it saves it with the full link, and active hot links in the clip.

I take photos in it a lot: documents, map-boards, notice board memo’s, business cards, etc.

I also scan/photo personal documents that I can then file away if I ever need the original, or bin. So rent agreements, receipts, etc.

Recently I emailed tickets for a film festival next year to my evernote account. Yeah, I could find them in my email, or print them, but if I lose them or forget them it’s dead easy to find them in evernote on my phone.

And there is the key – searching! Evernote is so damn easy to search. The above can be done in lots of ways, I know, but searching is what makes Evernote so good. The paid version has much better search features. It searches hand-written notes, business cards, map boards, etc.

I’m know that I don’t use it to its full potential, but for me it’s like a giant scrap book that’s super easy to search, on both my phone and laptop.

Not for everyone I guess, but I am a fan 8)

Nowt, just use it for a month then see what you need.

I bought quite a lot of accessories for my Air, but haven’t used them really. Used the USB to LAN adapter a fair bit when setting-up back-ups and shifting music to my NAS drive, and the CD/SuperDrive for the same. That’s because I didn’t have any of this (or my CD’s converted) before. If I had it wouldn’t have taken long over wi-fi I guess. Since then, not used them. Also don’t use the thunderbolt monitor adapter, however I see that I may need this for connecting to projectors one day. Maybe. And I’ve never used my bluetooth keyboard, reckon I’ll be selling that. Very glad I didn’t buy the apple mouse, the touchpad is so good I’d never use it.

Lenser P7.2 is my choice, and i’m happy with it. Nice size, bright, good beam pattern and zoom. Available in Cotswold outdoors if you have one locally (so you can go have a look/play with them).

Those £6 torches are rubbish. Honestly, My Dad bought one for fishing. He likes it because he doesn’t know better. They aren’t waterproof, they are heavy and bulky, and the quality is what you’d expect for £6. Built in battery will only last a few months before it won’t hold it’s charge also.

Running in it will be horrible.

(You’d have been way better off with the Lenser Neo, it’s small, light, and well balanced).

Still on the first page and it’s boiled down to religion already.

I know, I mean WTF has Christmas got to do with religion. Sorry for dragging it off topic

Christmas day is great: the roads are empty, the hills are empty, and I get the day off

A fair article, and those saying otherwise are just looking for a reason to argue in my opinion.

It gives evidence for and against high vis clothing, helmets, flashing or steady lighting, and concludes with acknowledging that drivers attitudes towards cyclists need to change. For the mainstream “biased” media I think they’ve done a good job.

For those who want facts rather than their own opinion, here are some free scientific articles:

Lenser Neo torch is designed for running. You can put rechargeables in it, and it’s £25.

Quality torch, simple, does the job.

My £2.99 tesco mouse, at least 8 years old, works perfectly with my mac. Didn’t even need to install it., just plugged it in and it worked instantly.

Suggest a fault with your settings somewhere, or your mouse.

I think we should ban dogs.

They leave poo on the pavement
    They bite
    They bark all night
But worst of all, they don’t like fireworks!

PC World Cloud is also reasonably priced. Not used it, but was looking around yesterday for similar reasons (want to duplicate my Lacie NAS drive, including time machine back-up, automatically to the cloud each day).

I would never use iTunes Match, as apart from the cost, it downgrades music to 256Kb/sec, and I rip at 320

Why do you downgrade to 320kbs? I ripped all mine at lossless, 11,000-ish kbs :P

hey just need to share it differently

Don’t all services work this way? You either need to share them publicly, or “invite friends”. If you invite people they need to sign-in, but then they can add their own photos and comments etc.

The hate some people have for Apple is stupid, I don’t get this upset when my friend sends me a OneDrive link or Dropbox link, and I have to sign in to view them.

Get over it, 5 years ago you’d have been sat waiting for 50 emails to download individual files no larger than 10MB.

Any of them do the job to be honest, I’d stick with a known brand rather than supermarket own products, purely for reliability.

A Polar FT1 can be had for around £30 and will do the job.

I’m on Netflix and have just taken the 30 day free trial for NowTV.

Netflix has enough to keep me entertained, especially the box sets.

NowTV – I’ve watched plenty of films during my free trial but won’t be continuing it. I prefer the box sets and documentaries, and price, of Netflix.

Also NowTV doesn’t seem to work on my Mac (they say it’s a Silverlight problem and suggest various hacks to fix it, however Netflix runs using Silverlight just fine), doesn’t have a “last watched” or “favourites” folder either, and I find the interface very poor to be honest (on Apple TV).

Why not just get the 30 day free trial for it and see what you think?

Personally I’m going to stick with Netflix at £6.99 a month, and if I want a blockbuster movie I’ll rent it from iTunes. NowTV is just too expensive for what it is.

Or just start iPhoto on the Mac – it’ll see the iPhone as a camera.

Download photos. I think it even offers to delete them for you – otherwise delete from the phone yourself to make space.

This. Of course, you’ll still only have the one copy on the mac then, so best hope that doesn’t get lost or stolen.

Or find a McDonalds and borrow their wi-fi.

If she’s not really trail running then forget about trail running shoes. Crossing a muddy field isn’t trail running. Trail running shoes don’t have the same cushioning as road shoes, and the treads will wear down super fast on pavement.

The most important feature will be fit, so get to a running shop and try some on. One with a treadmill would be best, so you can give them a proper test.
