Wouldn’t be up for the whole route (race the next day) but could pootle down to the start and do a reasonable chunk of the road leg if that’s allowed?
Questions
Would turning up on my best plastic road bling and mamil attire be allowed?
If not, I can keep the mamil gear and dig the winter bike out. It has guards and is made of Ti so is almost in keeping with the original equipment.m1keaFree Member@ V8
I think wwaswas would look very silly trying to get on that 😆

WD40
get ready for a flamming!!
He’s cleaning with it not trying to lube anything. Seems fine to me (though GT85 smells x1000 nicer natch).
Thank you
Many years ago I tried cleaning bits with Coke (the drink) and tomato sauce (separately). Slightly alarming how quickly 1p and 2ps buffed up.
Oh and Comma spray grease is great for gear levers, linkage bearings etc
m1keaFree MemberAm I the only one who splits cassettes down to individual cogs and hand cleans them?
WD40, GT85 or whatever else is to hand works for me.
Yes I know some of the spiders don’t split down but hand cleaning is therapeutic.
m1keaFree MemberHere’s an excellent website posting examples on how NOT to shoot estate agency pics
m1keaFree MemberWe tagged onto the back of the BHF ride (well 2.5 hours afterwards) and got away with a light covering of rain.
Unfortunately I can’t use that as an excuse for my pliss poor ride (2 hours slower than last year) and despite it being my 8th SDWiaD, as brakes said, don’t underestimate the hills.

Does anyone know if Neill Newell is still looking after the SDD website?
m1keaFree MemberI only get this when using a deepish (50mm) section wheel. My TT frame has some deep/aero/wide tubes which will add to the mix but never had this on a conventional road bike.
Why not get hold of some Zipp 808s or similar and have another go with some proper deep section wheels to get the full buttock clenching sensation.
m1keaFree MemberNice one Mark and make sure you get in the SDD hall of fame. 8)
Two favourite moments from my night attempts were firstly, a white owl sitting on a fence post and silently flying away as I approached. T’other was riding down Harting Down with a herd of deer running along in the field next to me.

No it was Rob Bullyment from the Catford.
m1keaFree MemberWell done that man 8) 🙂
I was involved with the recent National 24 hour time trial in East Sussex.
One of the competitors did the whole event on 80″ fixed 😯
I could possibly cope with single speed but riding fixed, for a day is just mental.

Strava is a phone application and everyboby has a différent phone. Strava works better on road sections. Use it to follow your personel best rather than to win KOMs.
Is it? is that why my Garmin GPS has been wrong for the past 5 years…..
I know GPS’s have fun in tress and that you get variances with the tracking sites like Strava and Garmin Connect (200rpm bursts of cadence etc) but this just seems odd to me.
I’ll be doing the same ride on Sat so it’ll be interesting to see what time/route I’ll do this time round.

Best of luck. I had a crack at the double last week E-W-E but turned back at Amberley as I wasn’t feeling particularly strong…..
I tried E – W – E in 2009 but bailed at Cocking on the way back 😳
Hopefully Mark is motoring to the finish as we speak.
Wunderground also suggests a wet one for Sat. 🙁
m1keaFree MemberIf the 9:13 to Ebo is actual elapsed time then that’s seriously rocking it 8) 8)
m1keaFree MemberI’m confident that that route is correct. So confident that I can say it’s not totally ‘correct’ in that the start point isn’t the ‘proper’ start point in Winchester.
There’s also a point just after halfway where the route can take a ‘walking’ or a biking option to cross the A24 though I’ve yet to meet anyone who’s ever done the walking version.
For the volume of people who do this route, I don’t believe that there’s enough differences for other rides to not be recorded ❓

The only potential negative thing i’ve read about them is around the lack of availability of spare spokes if you do break one. They are definately a tempting offer.
FWIW
I’ve been riding a set since 2004 and not had any probs. Well the bearings have got a bit gritty and I think the (Shimano) freehub is on it’s way out but I really can’t complain after 10 years!

Yeah I’m aware crossers came well before MTBs :-). I cobbled together a 1 X 9 HT last year that basically hasn’t had any use hence the Q. MTB drive train + road cassette would probably still be undergeared but could be a start?
Mind you I’ve just remembered I do have a load of 9spd road spares as well.
I found an interesting 60 mile+ ride / route that doesn’t lend itself to road tyres, but is too road for a MTB, hence a hybrid / cross would be ideal.
m1keaFree MemberSlight threadjack s’il vous plait
The N+1 collection currently doesn’t include a cross bike and these Tripsters look like they’d fill that niche. – I have bikes for pretty much all types of riding so this wouldn’t need to be a jack of all trades.
If I raided the parts bin and butchered a bike or two would I be mainly looking at road or MTB parts? I could strip a hardtail down and fit most of the drive train though I presume there’s no easy / practical way to combine hyrdaulic brakes with road STIs?
m1keaFree MemberNice one DrP and props to you both for Xrossing that. 8)
On my 1st SDWiaD one of the guys rode a cross but had to bail at the A24 as he’d been shaken to bits.
My two club mates finally agreed to do it this Sat so looking forward to trip n#8
m1keaFree MemberDoes he already have a road bike? If so, I’d suggest starting with some clip on aero bars and a pointy hat first.
This’ll be the cheapest way into TTing and allows for one bike to handle a couple of disciplines. If he’s still keen after a few months then you can start throwing the cash at the bling.
Oh and http://www.timetriallingforum.co.uk/index.php? is the main TT forum in the UK.

I came up behind a bloke and his dog…
…”why would I want to hurt a dog, even if it is off a lead and unsupervised? If the bloke is right there it’s not exactly “unsupervised” and my experience of dogs on NCNs is that it’s usually a lot safer when they are off the lead and not attached to a dozy owner.
I’d rather encounter a dozy owner with a dog on a lead than not. By unsupervised I’m meaning not under direct physical control. Perhaps I’ve been unlucky?
Back to the original topic, I don’t understand why it’s OK for horses to 5h*t all over the place without any recourse? Considerably more volume per horse!
m1keaFree MemberOn a connected note I was riding along NCN21 a couple of years ago when I came up behind a bloke and his dog.
He immediately and loudly told me not to run over his dog (which wasn’t on a lead).
To which I replied “why would I want to hurt a dog, even if it is off a lead and unsupervised? I then pointed out the Cycle part of NCN and that it’s not a linear dog toilet.
Don’t think it made much difference as he obviously thought that as a local doggist, it was his path to do what he liked with.
m1keaFree MemberMaking a list of the other bits, plus I should be able to nick a half decent (if very old) workench and clamps of me dear ol’ da’…
If it is an old one (20+ years) it’s likely to have a decent wooden worktop and metal parts, unlike modern mdf and plastic efforts

A £1700 monitor!!! The world has truly gone mad.
Can I suggest you DON’T look at colour accurate ones from Eizo, NEC et al?
Such as thisRecently got a 27″ widescreen Dell, stepping up from an old 21″ 4:3 Viewsonic. Decided against a 24″ widescreen as it didn’t have enough of a resolution step up for photo work.
m1keaFree MemberI must confess to having too many tool toys 😳 .
Most of it is Makita 18v Lion kit and aside from the obvious drill drivers, the recip and oscillating multi tool have been very useful, more than I’d expected.
Don’t forget tool storage / carry cases for when you’re moving about.
m1keaFree MemberOh and I’m sure you’ve already been on http://www.southdownsdouble.net/%5B/url%5D
Ironically I caught Ben Amesbury (DaisyDuke on here) in 2011 climbing up to Truleigh. When he told me of the amount of punctures he’d had in the first 60 miles my immediate thought was f… that for a game of soldiers!
P.S if we get our act together, I’ll be doing Winc – Ebo on the 19th with a mate.

Thanks m1kea. Excellent ride there, and a good lack of time spent faffing instead of riding (often my downfall!)
Cheers Mark
More waffling about it here
I didn’t really stop per se so it was surprising how much time can be lost just on quick pit stops. That’s the fastest I’ve ever done it but is still waaay off the mark of the fast boys. – Chris Noble recently whizzed it in 8:20[/url]
m1keaFree MemberWhen I tried to the do the double back in 09 I intended on ‘coming back’ with the BHF ride for a bit of moral support / people to chase.
That didn’t work out so cut to last year and chasing the BHF ride two + hours after they’d started
I dunno how many actually take part but it’s really not that busy and it’s nice to be able to chat to folk. I encountered handfuls of peeps at Cocking, Amberley, Truleigh, Southease and Alfriston. It’s possible that you’d hit a load of peeps at (their) start but it’s hardly going to be like a mass start lap race.
The newer route at Warnford is a bit longer and the revised start/finish at Ebo is further on compared to the original Paradise Drive point.
All the best with the attempt 8)
m1keaFree MemberJust been lusting at the 109C team and realised I recognised the background of this pic
Do you think they’d chuck me a long term eval (i.e permanently) for being a smartypants? 😉 🙄

When I saw the topic title, the 1st thing I thought of was that map. Titled Geoffrey Howe’s Map of the world IIRC.
Sheer class in it’s offensiveness and from 83 or 84.

The roads are poor at best !! …. some roads are virtually dirt, more like bobs road !
A good ride out from fethiye would be to the top of bagada mountain , awesome views from the top, get to watch all the para gliders throw them selves off the top while having a coffee and then hurtle back down the mountain …I’ve been reliably informed that the scariest part of that Paragliding trip is the drive up!!
Been to that area many times and were I to ever take a bike, it’d be a MTB or cross bike with decent tyres.
Strava will give you an idea of some routes and the ‘back’ road to Kayakoy was pretty steep in a car.
Prepare for some hills. 🙂

It is indeed!
Dunno if that makes me a complete saddo as I’ve spent the grand sum of 5 days visiting there.
And seeing where you are, and I guess are working, full carbon bling isn’t going to be an issue! 😀
m1keaFree MemberHave brought from Digital Rev in the past without problem. Not used Ian K but he has a good rep.
We were in HK last year and I understand that a lot of the local shops can now only offer ‘local’ warranties. Not sure what DigRev’s position is on that these days
m1keaFree MemberI gather you can get very good student discounts for Adobe products and there are ‘other methods’ to get software keys. 😉
I reckon Elements would do the trick though.
m1keaFree MemberLightroom is my bread and butter tool but I’ve been using it since before it was an Adobe product.
It’s no good for layers and advanced editing but then again I doubt many people do more than scratch the surface of what Photoshop is capable of.
Not used Elements but it sounds like it’ll do pretty much everything that your ‘average joe/josephine’ would want.
I’d also question the logical of chucking money at what may only be a short term requirement.
m1keaFree Member+1 to the ‘shithole’ comments.
We’ve only ever done overnighters there as part of gulet cruises and can never get out of there fast enough. Do you have the option to change location?

Crate of beer and local fire station
All joking apart, would you be happy to pay for such a service? – I think I would.
In fact, I’m going to email a fireman mate on the subject!
