Track saw would give the straightest finish:

That saw is the wrong colour

I’ve never joined any worktops before but trying to hand cut those jointing holes would be err, labourious. I’m pretty sure the fitters above will say get a proper jig and route this. You can defo hire routers and I’ll be surprised if you can’t hire the jointing jigs

A couple my bikes have Exposure Red Eye’s permanently mounted on them for rear light duties.

I’ll then plug in either a Joystick, Diablo, Race, Enduro or even a 6 Pack for the front. Yes I have commuted with a 6 pack

(Can you tell I’m a USE junkie?)

Additionally I have a Lezyne micro rear which gets moved around and expressly used on the TT bike for racing.

I’ve gone through loads of lights over the years and am old enough to have had these pile o’ shite waste of space things in the 80s

No router or circular saw.

Two options here:

i go and buy one or t’other (or ideally, both )
ii find someone nearby who can either lend you said kit or do it for you for beer and/or cake.

Just to resurrect this again.

Mrs A has come up with Lech, St Anton, St Johann and I’ll lob in Fiss. I suspect the 1st two are quite posh (and expensive)!

Preference is to do this as a package for convenience though that may rule out Fiss.

Any other thoughts from the collective?

Whilst that may be true, if the course is Mac-centric then it’s going to be a constant arseache when your setup isn’t quite the same as the course leader’s.

Totally agree, which is why I suggested sticking with what everyone else will use. Oh and don’t Apple have funny  key icons for the Windows key etc?

Deda’s site is being teh ghey but the Pista is from memory either 23 or 25′, which is the steepest I could find without going down the Look adjustable stem route. I got one for my old TT bike to drop the aero bars below the headset.

I’m a Windoze user through and through and maintain that you can use any of the desktop publishing/graphics/photographic apps that were traditionally the domain of Mac.

That said, if the Uni is a fully functioning Apple shop and you can get decent educational discounts through them, it’d make sense to stick with Apple, especially if you have no legacy of using Windows.

I do need to replace our 5 yo Vaio laptop but I’m struggling to find a machine that has a decent screen, is light and has the horsepower for this sort of thing. Unfortunately MBP’s fit the bill but I can’t bring myself to buy one.

In my experience, OS version upgrades and/or imaging is never that clean a process and you can’t beat a brand new install from scratch. YMMV.

I’ve just done this on a home machine and it took about a day to reload all my various photographist progs, settings and what not.

I’m just about to do it on a new work machine and I expect half a day of reloading misc apps that we can’t image.

Did I read correctly you’re currently on Vista?

If so, “I say we take off, nuke the site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.” and start with a fresh W7 build on the new SSD.

Also not worth going over 4GB of RAM if you’re on a 32bit OS

The missus used to go to Hoch Solden many many years ago. I’ve only ever skied in North America so am used to empty slopes, English as a 1st language (if you know what I mean ) and small quaint hills.

I’ll ping her the list of suggestions above^^^ to do some further research.

m1kea – The Saracen Hack is a drop barred CX/Urban style bike, so the OP should have at least some idea of how drop barred bikes fit.

I’d be comparing the geo of the Hack to any possible new bike in addition (or in the absence of) to a test ride.

My bad as I didn’t check the bike beforehand. Defo agree with comparing the existing geo to any potential replacements. IIRC a lot of cross racers go with smaller cross frames to reduce weight and make them easier to carry (for the short, but flat out cross races).

Might be worth factoring this in when checking sizings again?

I’d definitely concentrate on getting the fit right and then choosing the frame. If you’ve only come from MTB’s, the lower overall height of road bikes (short headtube / smaller stack height) might take some getting used to.

In recent years my road bikes have definitely moved towards taller head tubes and shorter top tubes. In your case a longer bike may help with the long arms but you could end up stretching too far. Stems are the obvious fix for this but you don’t really want to be running 70 or 130mm stems to get the right reach.

Any test rides really need to be at least 20 mins and not around a car park.

Blackland Farm near East Grinstead pretty much backs onto the Bluebell railway. It’s geared up for Scouts / Guides etc but might be worth a look?

And following on from rewski’s comment, don’t try too many samples at Middle farm :D

Yay.

Sorry, you’re going to have to explain that one to me. I don’t think I’d ever be described as upto to date, trendy or whatever other buzzword is in vogue.

But back vaguely on topic, some of the above posts just sound really creepy.

If you’re going to be in the Eastbourne / Lewes area, then include Middle Farm. Cracking cider shop 8) and it has animals for the kids.

In a Kent direction there’s Port Lympne animal reserve not far from the Eurotunnel.

No idea about the town or accommodation but Tenterden is fairly in the middle for many of the places mentioned above

Built a new custom machine a couple of months ago with a Plextor M.2 boot disk, a couple of SSDs for scratch and a 3TB HDD (main storage is a NAS).

Granted it’s replaced a 4 year old PC but I can boot it and be editing pictures in Lightroom before the old machine has finished loading the W7 boot screen.

Many years ago when I were a lad we had a cat that kept coming in. I managed to catch it and douse it in lemonade. My rationale behind this was it’d hate the sticky stuff in it’s fur. Seemed to do the trick iirc.

..the ASA is telling car companies it’s ok to use the term in their TV ads..

I wonder how they’d feel about adverts for houses that boasted about buyers paying zero Poll Tax?

My Sunday paper has a motoring section and they totally interchange car/road/vehicle/ved (tax) in all their articles. You’d think the editors would pick up on this purely for consistency.

molgrips in not adhering to N+1 mantra :-)

I must confess to quite a bling winter bike and whilst it’s a nice bike, getting onto something lighter and faster is one of the pleasures of spring.

I know two guys who regularly do 30+ miles each way 3 – 5 days a week. One rides pretty much every day (20K miles per year) and sets off around 4:30 AM. T’other leaves around 5:30 for an 8 – 5 day.

I’m too bone idle to commit to that level of riding and as has already been mentioned, when it’s lashing it down, blowing a hooley and dark, the thought of 1.5+ hours to/from work doesn’t float me boat.

It’s really obvious but I’ll say it anyway; summer riding is quite different from a dark and dank winter trip.

Should I get a wet weather bike?

FTFY

Yes if you have the funds, space and inclination. It doesn’t have to be winter to want/need a durable and more weather resistant bike. My ‘winter’ bike nearly gets as much use as the better road bikes.

Plugging through the winter on a heavier, less racy bike is good training and it’s a real pleasure when you can move on to some bling when the weather picks up.

Don’t forget the noddy overshoes and winter gloves.

I know its not technical by most people’s definition but speed & fatigue add there own risks…25mph+ down some of those hills into eroded chalky gullies makes things getting interesting quickly, add wet/damp conditions and things can get nasty

Concur

I was hooning down Kings / Star lane into Alfriston on a ride last year and nearly did a 25mph+ OTB over one of the ‘speed bumps’. :|

SDW at night, in fog is unnerving and I’ve been glad of the GPS to show the way. Oh and going through a field of sheep and only seeing their eyes reflecting in your lights is quite freaky

I prefer my 26″ XC F/S and am usually just as quick as my HT but that might be my advancing years.

None of the SDW is remotely technical so whatever rolls the best for you.

I always have black thoughts about Itford hill and its magnetic grass but that’s usually because I only ever do it after 80+ miles of riding.

However it isn’t actually that bad, certainly when compared to Amberley Mount and a couple of other git climbs.

6:50 is early? Can I suggest you don’t try any Time Trials then

Sensible meal the night before and allow enough time to sleep and digest. I only ever eat a bowl of cereal in the morning regardless of what riding I’m down to do.

+1 to taking some savoury stuff for variety.

Following on from JoB’s comment getting out at Preston Park would give you a 4ish mile ride out to Pyecombe where you can pick the SDW up.

That route is a bit of road and then a dedicated cycle path alongside the A23.

I’d personally not bother faffing with a train change at Lewes and just add a few extra miles to your trip.

This 3.5 mile road / tarmac’d cycle path route (which is on the north side of the A27) would get you to Housedean Farm from which you cross over the road and then head back up and around Kingston Vale.

That’d get you warmed up for Itford Hill after Southease

Nice one fellas 8) and apols to Ed for the wrong name.

Re the 4 up; a lack of racing fitness from all of us saw us only just dribble under the hour but it was a nice day and a good laugh.

Apols in advance but I’m rubbish with names.

I parted company with the guys at the A25 and then took a scenic loop with (Toby??) west around LGW before going home.

Up to that point only 1 puncture at Smallfield and everyone was in good spirits. Fingers crossed the weather held.

If you are keeping its food and litter tray next to each other you are teaching it to associate feeding with crapping. Also if you feed it when you eat then you are also encouraging it to evacuate to make more space.

Err where did I say that we were doing any of the above?

Anyway, let’s move on.

You have a place indoors for the cat to take a dump and that place is the kitchen? Where you store and prepare food? Do you all sit on commodes around the dining table so you can join in with the cat?

Well some of us don’t have big gaffs and we don’t have a choice.

However your post reminded me of some submissions on http://terriblerealestateagentphotos.com, including these gems

Do I detect a wee possibility that zippykona isn’t a cat lover?

A couple of our garden borders get used by local cats but I just fork it over as extra compost.

We did originally look at the enclosed litter trays but I red carded them on the basis that if the cat didn’t use it to begin with, we’d have to get a conventional one.

If you could rustle up a crane, low loader and a big chunk of bluff/blag you could swipe this Tornado from Shoreham airport.

Apparently it’s the 3rd prototype built.
