Just to play devil’s advocate, I wonder if there’s a interweb thread currently running about ‘some dozy tart pulled out in front of me, yadda yadda yadda’?

I’d fully expect to see that sort of thing as unfortunately it is usually the cyclist who comes off worse. Of course I’m not saying this is what happened and it doesn’t sound good that the fella has apparently given bogus info.

£37 for a year’s CTC membership is a no brainer .to me

Aside from a 55 chainring, I don’t have a problem riding up hills on my TT bike……..

All joking apart, stick with a conventional road bike as that’s what they’re designed to do and as njee says, you really do need to try a few out for fit.

I have two carbon road bikes and two Ti’s (one’s the TT wagon). Carbon will be cheaper than Ti and I personally prefer the ride of Ti. – Horses for courses and all that.

    Sorry , back again

My LBS (the HQ of a big firm beginning with E) have said 10 + days for that funnel!  but I can source it elsewhere for Thursday though.

I’m going to try trimming the rear hose tonight but the front still has oil residue on the caliper so is it possible that the I did knack the pistons by over extending them? – A bit of conjecture on my part but I think I somehow didn’t have the disc in fully and the pistons may have closed at an angle?

I’m fully aware that this is world class stupidity on my part and I don’t want to waste oil by refilling them only to watch it all come straight out the bottom because the piston isn’t sealing or whatever.

The Avid kit hasn’t been used so no worries about contamination.

    Mr P

That’s the destructions I’ve got. I got a 50ml tube of oil earlier but where do you get the pot etc etc? – These don’t seem to feature in the expensive bleed kit?

How difficult is it to do a single all singing and dancing kit?

My two attempts at the double started in Ebo as it was closer to home and I preferred to get the bulk of the worst climbs done earlier in the night whilst I was still fresh.

I know a couple of folk who bike camped it over 3 days, taking all their kit plus having some grim weather on the last day.

I’m doing it all again on Sat and we’ll be starting in Winch because of the (fingers crossed) prevailing wind.

If you’re talking a laden 700c tourer there WILL be hills you won’t be able ride up and a couple that I’d not be too happy about riding down. If you’re happy to potentially push for a few miles then I can’t see why a tourer would be a prob.

    Cheers folks

I’m not that fussed about a few quid here or there so it’ll be a trip to Evans for the bits though they don’t appear to list the olive and barb.

    ahwiles

I have an Avid bleed kit with syringes so can use them but I still can’t get my head around what the expensive Shimano kit does that’s different? :?:

The gate stories are serious paaaarrrrp moments and I hope to never have one.

On my two overnight trips on the SDW I’ve taken music (the only time I’ve ever cycled with a music player) as there’s no way I’d go through some of those woods being able to hear things

I’d give Exposure a call and ask about spares. They’ve been very helpful with me in the past when I’ve brought direct from them.

The top tube brake guides and that fluted seat post are pretty much the same as my first serious bike, a Raleigh Road Ace which I paid £400 for back in 1987.

    Brings back memories :-).

Now, go and make sure the tops of those bars are more or less horizontal.

m1kea – really? not to go tubs? why is this? fixability of the tubs?

i am not going to be racing, but i like the idea of trying them out as here in switzerland the climbing is really great..

    would be interested to know!

    I have:

A pair of Corima Aeros (2004)
    A pair of 56mm Easton EC90 TTs (2011)
    Corima Disk (2006)
Ancient Mavic 3G (brought 2nd hand in 97!)

As you can probably tell, my wheels are for time trialling. Tubs roll very nicely (potentially better than clinchers) and are generally lighter.

The main downside is punctures. I seemed to get loads back in 2009 and they’re not cheap or quick to sort out. Conti’s in particular are utter gits to fit and I’ve stopped using them after spending 15 mins replacing one by the roadside in my last 100 mile TT.

Peter Burgin[/url] is well known as the man for tub repairs in the UK and he’s had plenty of business from me over the years.

I’d personally never try a tub repair as there’s just too much work involved for my taste, abilities and interest level.

njee20, it sounds like you’ve been lucky with your tubs?

    m1kea

    Ditto what t’others have said.

Full carbon tubs wheels can be v light and as an owner of 6 CF wheels, I’d actually say don’t go with tubs unless you’re planning on regularly racing.

I have some D/A 7850 C24 wheels on one of the road bikes and they’ve been nice. Merlin have the current 7900 versions here

That Drek has cheaper components on it, which is why I discounted it.

    OW
I’ve looked at Canyon stuff but their lead times can be a bit long.

I was quite taken with this Simplon but that’s not cheap!

    [start]complete tart mode

Well our club strip is mainly greens and whites so the Scott has the worst scheme of the 3(ignore the fact my spesh is team red & white ).

    /[end]

There is some good pricing on the Cube which brings it more in to line with the two Yankmobiles but I know nothing about them. It has the best spec though.

    Keep the thoughts coming please

As I said in the other thread, to do it properly, you need to to do it solo and unsupported

Not used Bike24 before, are the decent?

Had a gander at the levers in Evans and I really CBA to dismantle brand new stuff, especially if it needs a bleed kit to do it.

@rse. So that means a complete hose dismantlement, something I’ve never done and don’t really want to learn the hard way on a brand new product. :|

Oh and all six of my currently running bikes are left hand fronts so I’m not going to change before someone suggests it.

    Cheers for the replies though

Defo get some chammy cream – ASSOS ftw in my book.

As for saddles, they are a very personal thing and you may need to try various options as you’ll be spending a lot more time on your saddle when on the road.

I’ve used various Selle Italia saddles for years (the original Flite Ti is my all time fave) but couldn’t get on with the SLR.

You might want to try Spesh’s @rse-o-meter saddle guide. If nothing else it will give you an idea of your sit bones and associated dimensions.

When Shimano went to 10 speed they made freehubs out of alu to save weight. The (10 spd) cassettes have the same pattern splines but are deeper / taller so won’t fit on older freehubs.

Shim did go back to the ‘original’ pattern a while back for a number of groupsets; – D/A 7850 wheels have more durable freehubs for example.

You do realise you do need to do it solo / alpine stylee to do it ‘properly’?

Big props for completing it and it makes my bailout after 130 miles / 15 hours all the more galling for not having the guts to carry on.

Did/do have a gps tracker of any sort?

Great day (and night). I managed my Double and got back to Winchester this morning at 7:55am. So a little outside the magic 24hour target, but hey, I realy don’t care as I aint doin it again! Thanks so much to everyone who wished me well on the return leg and great to meet M1kea. Thanks for you positive attitude!
I had 6 flats by mile 67 which kinda messed with my head and I ended up swapping front and rear tyres. Massive thanks to wifey who hung around dark lay-bys until mile 150. Have very sore knees, not to mention posterior. Made for an uncomfortable trip back to North Wales!

Top Man and well done with plugging on 8)

I did post a quick thread about our meeting here.

Now kind of wish I’d carried on with you a ways further, especially as I’d got my distances wrong and it was 13 miles back home not the 7 or so I said to you

You know I’ll like that. Like the white headtube. But don’t those older frames have a nice ride, not comparing them to the modern stuff, but nice in their own/different way.

I was going to suggest an old Campag Chorus aero post, try Hillary Stone.

Now because it’s so nice my nit picking is going to make sound a twunt, but the kits almost too good for that winter build look? if that makes sense.

Edit; Nah scrub that it looks great, perhaps a classic wheelset though? Campag hubs and Open Pro CDs or Ceramics for that old full grey look.

I recently brought an Enigma Etape as a winter bike and it has a selection of Dura Ace on it at the mo. – Overkill bling? Probably but I need to ensure I stay riding this winter and this is my incentive.

I know what you mean re classic frames and matching similar era components. Modern stuff can look odd on noodly steel frames :D

    Blimey. That is soul destroying.

Easy to say should have run tubeless but hindsight is a terrible thing.

Good luck to him…fingers crossed he makes it

He was on 29’ers so I couldn’t give him a spare or two. Very strange to have that much trouble and I gather Mrs DD had had to go shopping for more :(.

Twas another BHF 65 / 100 mile ride today and I’d passed quite a few peeps on the trail side with punctures.

    Superfi

He bombed away from me on the two descents we did so I don’t think there was any brake dragging going on on his part!

I’m in a similar position with my photos

    Primary Win 7 PC 1TB C, 2TB E and extra 1TB
    Old Primary XP PC 500Gb C + 4 X 1TB raid 5 (2.5TB E + 800GB F)
ReadyNas Duo with two 2TB mirrored.
    Couple esata external disks

Primary machine regularly gets cloned onto NAS and important files get punted to XP machine plus the other internal and external disks.

In an ideal world I’d want a 5 or 6 bay raid 5 enclosure with 2TB disks and maybe a smaller box for further offsiting.

Trouble is we’re probably talking £1K to do this properly with a decent external enclosure with a good array card and non ‘green’ (i.e slow) disks.

Oh and don’t forget a decent inline UPS. I’d look at 500VA or more to ensure a decent run time if things go pete tong

Could you setup a VPN on your home network then VPN from work into that and browse that way? Not certain that’d work like but it might?

I think I can guess what content filtering system the OP’s company is using and if they’re as on the ball as it looks, ALL the proxy avoidance tricks are blocked so good luck with that.

And harsh as it sounds, Dr J is right with his post.

I tried back in June and the start was at 5:30

Officials get there at 5:00am and set up camp. You can register on the day for about 35.00

Leave anytime really, but the ‘official’ start if 05:30

First train gets me to Winch for 7:30ish so probably a 8AM kick off for me.

    I’ve used Look since 1989 on’t road.

The previous generation were infamous for squeaking but I’ve not had any probs with my four pairs of Keos.

Oh and one advantage  of worn cleats is you get a bit more float

TBH I wouldn’t sweat any small subtle differences in frame dimensions though an 11cm stem may be worth a punt?

An inline seat post may also move you forward (and down???) a splash enough to change your position relative to the bars.

What did the bikefit say about your torso length?

I had one done out of curiosity and it confirmed what I already knew; I have a slightly short torso for my 5’10 height.

One of my road bikes is a 54cm TT and I currently have a 10cm stem on it. My (new) winter bike is a 56cm TT and I’ve put a 9cm stem on that.

TBH I don’t spend a lot of time on the drops so don’t really notice any knee – elbow interfacing. If I want to ride as fast as poss, I have a time trial bike for such things.

Would love to go back and spend a few more days there. Maybe next year.

From a pure tourist perspective, we loved bimbling around on the trams, just watching the world go by. Cheap as chips and the land version of the ferries, if that makes sense?

For the de rigueur Peak view, it was recommended to me to walk along Lugard road a bit. Hardly anyone along there and I got some decent enough pano shots

I’m planning on popping out for the 65 miler as a warm up for another full distance trip on the 13th.
