    I have two Netgear ReadyNAS’s.

First, a Duo which was fine for storing stuff but has pony write speeds due to disk mirroring.

Second is a Ultra 6 (raid5) which has been happily running for over a year. Data storage and Squeezebox duties.

We have two of their ReadyNas 3200’s (24TB) at work which have been pretty good for the past two years so no issues with Netgear as a company.

Defo worth getting a small UPS as well

As long as you are out there doing it, it really doesn’t matter what you ride. Oh, and there are many 40, 50 and 60 y.o’s who put the fitness of guys half their age to shame.

Sigma 120-300 F2.8. Secondhand. Will even have change out of £1k to buy a Sigma 1.4 tele converter.

Lots of lens for not a lot of pennies.

I’ve had some good results with a friends when shooting static / slow moving subjects but the servo AF sucked big time for sports stuff.

Dunno if the OS version is better but then that’s more expensive.

I went through three Sigma 70-200 f2.8’s before biting the bullet and getting the Canon version. IQ was all over the place with the Sigmas, which isn’t exactly unusual.

As always, I recommend Anthony Beggs’ SDW website – http://www.bikedowns.co.uk/index.html

Did everyone finish at the ‘new’ finish, i.e where the footpath version starts and end? It makes more sense now though that hill would be a git to start out on.

Am I right in saying that that’s a slide hammer, and you’re wanting to to use it as a blind hole puller? – I was looking at stuff like this a few months back but couldn’t quite get my head around the terminology.

Something like this Clarke set – http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cht251-10-pce-slide-hammer-puller-set?

Just as an FYI for me, am I right in saying you need something like the 3 arm hub / gear extractors to pull the bearing out from one side?

Chatting with some BoB guys I know they’re keen to try and get a decent climb route in a la Afan etc. Trouble is the area isn’t hilly enough for such things.

I’ve not studied the history in depth but I believe you could reword your first post, replacing ‘American’ with ‘British’ and moving the dates back 100 years or so.

British Imperialism through the centuries has some very low points.

I know someone who’s been in a team car with Sean and that article is true.

Sean is an absolute legend and his brothers aren’t too shabby on their bikes either.

I think Emirates is the best airline we’ve ever flown with and I can think of worse airports to spend (transit) time in.

Did a weekend there in 95 before they started going bonkers with the building and glad we visited then. Would I go back again? Absolutely not, for all the reasons already cited.

Suction cups are used all the time for car photo and video rigs –

    http://www.b-hague.co.uk/camera_suction_pads_vacuum_mounts.htm

    http://www.filmtools.com/carmounts.html

Now the speeds are a lot lower but folk will happily plonk £000’s of camera kit on them.

I personally would want decent pneumatically adjustable cups as opposed to the cheapy pos jobs andyl has linked to. – No offence but we have one of those here at work and let’s just say you pay for what you get.

Definitely sort out what bits you want in advance and make sure they are compatible / fit / the right size. Bottom brackets and headset types are generally the ones that need the most research and don’t forget things like front mech band dimensions, IS/postmount adapters and so on.

This year I’ve changed my TT bike, full suss and brought a new hardtail.

Parts transplants are relatively straightforward but you can never have too much gear cable (inner and outer).

I’ve got tools for pretty much everything now but fork crown races can still be a pita to fit if you don’t have the right shims/drifts. You might find it easier to get a bike shop to fit the headset and trim the steerer.

Pretty much got on top of brake bleeding but again this can become one of those endless fettling jobs to get right.

However probably the most important bit of kit is a decent stand to work on. Make sure you have room around it, a clean floor on which to find all the bits you will drop, and a flat work surface to put parts and tools on.

If anyone’s contemplating doing it in a day within the next 4 – 6 weeks, you will need to take lights with you for the start and finish.

I’d also strongly recommend a long sleeve top / gilet / a n other item of clothing for once you’ve finished. You’ll be surprised how cold you can get once stopped.

From Amberley onwards you’re right down to sea level on four river crossings and those hills don’t get any easier as you head east.

    Riding in Winter?

As in riding when it’s damp / drizzly / wet / torrential / biblical?

If yes to any of the above, something with mudguard eyes for well, mudguards.

Plenty of steel frames out there

Following on from Shortcut’s comment I’ve done some more research and I’d forgotten that the cranks are 985’s which threads such as this indicate they have a narrower q factor.

The non drive side crank looks like it has 5mm or so clearance and there’s 3mm or so on the drive side without the protector.

Will follow OCB’s advice as well though would another 1mm of spacer really be that marginal?

how does the clearance on the non-drive side look?

You know, I didn’t actually snap that side 🙄 though I’ve not noticed any issue.

The Devinci protector is quite a nice chunky bit of kit and certainly less of a faff than lizardskins

I have noticed I’m heel rubbing the stays so will defo go mad with more 3m tape.

I borrowed a 6 pack for last year’s D2D as I’d loaned my lights to a club mate.

Didn’t need the power but it was very handy to have. More importantly the reduced power setting was still brighter that my best light at max.

Once you’ve enjoyed the pleasures of climbing Amberley Mount , make sure you look back over your shoulder towards Arundel and the coast.

Excellent views of the castle and Arun valley.

Views either side of the Ouse valley near Lewes are great though being to see the impending slog up Itfold hill can be a bit marmite.

I’ve always been a big gear kind of a guy and the granny ring has always been the least used on my triple setups.

This year I’ve got a new HT bike and full suss frame.

    HT came with 10 speed 42/27 + 11 – 36 cassette

FS received my existing 9 spd transmission set plus a new (10 speed) 40/28 chainset.

Not done any long distance (30 mile+) hill slogs as yet but have coped with the gearing and haven’t blown my knee caps off with 1000 rpm spinning.

I doubt I’d actually notice the difference but I reckon a 26/38 chainset + 11/32 or 34 cassette would suffice for just about anything.

when the M1 was built all the americans asked that all the bridges were at least 5m high so that they could get cruise missles under them.
Think that may be an urban legend, the standard night for an Unmarked Bridge in the UK is 16 feet 6 inches.

That doesn’t mean the Yanks didn’t ask though I suppose, just means there was no need for them to ask that’s all

I doubt there was much chance of that. I have no proof they didn’t ask for anything but the M1 was mostly completed in the late 60’s and cruise missiles were based at Greenham Common and Molesworth in the 1980’s. Nearest motorways to those are the M4 and M11 or A1.

I’m also pretty sure that no British roads or motorways were built to be used as emergency runways in the event of war. There seem to have been plenty of rumours that some were but most appear to have been easily debunked due to the number of bridges and permanent furniture.

I do recall reading somewhere that some German roads were built to be used as runways first in the late 1930’s and then again during the cold war in both East and West Germany.

    Concur with your time line.

The RAF did do some Jaguar landings on motorways.

I changed the gear outers on my new hardtail as white was a bit too garish on a black bike.

Full susser has a nicely co-ordinated bottle cage as well.

Oh we were talking about roadie bits?

Well I can’t find any white headset spacers or top caps for my ‘best’ road bike.

Chainset in question is a XT 770 iirc so I don’t want to swap that out.

Frame is a 04 Explosif with thin tubes. The description on those Superstar widgets suggests fitting on fatter seat tubes so would the BB mount be a better option? ❓

    Cheers fellas

I’m popping in to Evans later this afternoon to get some stuff but other than some short chainring bolts, can’t see anything that fits the above shopping lists.

For those with time to kill , am I missing something on their site?

Track pumps with wide (wooden) handles and a decent wide foot have a nicer balance. If you’re getting on in years, having the pressure gauge at the top of the barrel makes it easier to read.

I’d avoid ones with plastic handles and feet myself.

After my weekend’s perambulations round the red run I’m v keen to get club mates out to do this.

Now I don’t know if my enthusiasm will wane after Thetford D2D and probably three solid weeks of rain during Oct but hey.

Oh and I presume the start/finish and pit area / ‘camping’ will be in the main car park?

    Slightly OT question

What’s people’s definitions of ‘stretch’ and ‘wear’ here?

An old chain will be longer than a new one so it has ‘stretched’ but is this a case of semantics?

When the connections / rollers have worn, there’s more slack overall and the chain is longer, hence stretched.

Unless of course people can actually stretch the individual links of metal through sheer power

Not been for over two years, will give it another try. Been over at Friston a lot this summer, getting a lot busier over there these days.

I get the impression the bike club have done a lot of work so it’s probably a revisit. You could also incorporate a trip a bit further west? 😉

Went there on Sat for the first time to do a couple of laps.

Loved the runs as they were shall we say, not overly technical, and much more suited to my roadie mincing skilz :D.

There were a couple of gucky sections but the shop has a bike wash if you do get covered.

Shame it’s a ball ache to get to for me as I’d probably ride there weekly.

I’ve been using a Joystick and now a Diablo since 09. For some reason I don’t seem to be getting on with twisty ST this year, hence wondering if two very wide apart helmet lamps would help.

Obviously I have a bar light as well.
