Hmmm, probably rising to the cleverly set bait here, but have any of you tried riding the xc race course at Fort william. On a xc race Bike. If not try that, before claiming that you need a 50mm stem, a chain device and 7 inches of travel to be a man.

ANyway, sadly no pics, but my ‘man bikes’ so far have been –

Spesh big hit, Intense M1, 2 gt dhi’s and i now have a marin quake frame waiting to be built up…

yeah, i was there. I saw what happened and it was completely out of order. The said track is a large fire road, with farm buildings etc at the end, people reguarly ride from the farm building, used as stables in various directions, including up the hill we were to go up. Which IS a footpath we now know.I must say jez dealt with it very calmly, and maturely, if it was a few other riders i know, the other fella would have regretted it i think. Big Tony comes to mind…

My point of view, is that the ‘in new music we trust’ dj’s are good. Pete tong is a legend! Annie mac plays some great tunes, giles peterson has great tast etc. I even find Tim BIG DAWG Westwood amusing. But moyles should shoot himself.

Just going to see it myself at 8. Hopefully it will be good! It cant be a worse adaption than I am legend was. Or should i say ‘I am Will Smith’

well, the rims as i said are mavic 819’s, and the tyres are UST kenda nevegals. They are pumped up to around 35 – 40 psi. When i say landing sideways, i dont mean literally, but when i hip a jump or such like… It is far worse with the nevegals than any other tyre, so maybe they’ll have to be ditched…

Can i be first to say this? Rules are there to be broken.

Right, well ive been running tubes on tubeless rims so the worst that will happen is that but on none UST rims. I think I’ll try ghetto tubeless first. I just Spoke to a mate who did it, and it sounds promising. I think i’ll be going for some maxxis high rollers all round

    What compressors do you use?

this thread has made me laugh so much… when I used to go out with my local road club, I’d allways use my mtb shoes, pedals, and helmet with peak… They allways used to try to wind me up about it, and even worse was when I dared to bunny hop the speed bumps on one descent.

Not trying to wind people up, and it may have just been the people i rode with, but they took themselves far too seriously, and always used to critisize other riders, even they weren’t seious rodies or mtb-ers.

To be honest, I thought they were a group of idiots really…

I’m playing it at the moment… Its a great game in my opinion. I’ve wasted far too much time playing it as im unemloyed at the moment… I’d repeat what is said above, its tactical, and at first quite hard to get into…

Combe hill, thats the one. If you have to go across the top of combehill, and the route map says to keep in the trees right at the top, it will be hell. You’ll know it if you meet it. Anyway, you can go out in the field bit and avoid that, which I would do if I was you. More or less everything else should be fine though, just a bit wet, and slippy.

I had some old sids serviced, not pushed or anything. The difference was amazing. Ive also owned a gt dhi ( oh how i miss thee!) which had had the fox rear shock, and 888’s set up with different oil weights etc by mojo. The suspension was the best I’ve ever ridden without a question. Far better than standard 888’s and shock.

So if you are paying 100 pounds or so to get them serviced, and you intend to keep the foks for a while, i think it is definitely worth the extra money.

I hope you dont have to go along the top of that big hill bit – I cant remember it’s name but its gonna be very muddy

Sometimes I like the kind of scailectric biking you get at places like Afan, but i think in general, i enjoy tecnichal stuff more. Its still great fun… The beast is a good track, but I wouldn’t say its really technichal… Unless you tried to climb it.

I think i’ll just get some normal sealed cables… Any reccomendations?

I’ll take a real beast of a climb, technichal, physically tiring, and just a complete bitch. Maybe an hour and a half or so with the odd bit of flat to rest on. Then when i get to the top i’d like to find one of those new trek session 88’s. Then from there, a really technichal, steep, route back down. ANd can i have some big drops please? Something along the lines of the CHampery Dh course

As to whether i could ride the above, I’m not sure…

ok, I’ll just have to how they fell, it wasnt for anything bad so if i’m lucky…

The bontrager race lites aren’t actually at all that light, from memory they are over 2 kilos… Anyway, I had an 06 stumjumper hardtail, it was a great handling, fun bike. I dont think you would go wrong with either though.

Seriously, if you are going to do it, then i would look at somewhere closer to the Chiltern Hills… Like the places i mentioned previously… In reality, there is some fun, fast riding round where I live… I can’t really say much about where Herts shore is, but i believe it’s not as hilly. As for epping forest, i think there are places as close to london more or less, with more variety… if you head over wendover direction, the hills might not be too bg, but there are lots of them… You’re legs will definitely feel it if you try hard enough… And you can also descend for a good 3 or 4 minutes solid!!

I’m not trying to annoy anyone else by saying that, i just think that the chilterns would be your best bet…Plus

Ah, whats this about spds being scary on technical stuff?

Why do you want to dab anyway? Surely its faster to keep you feet on the pedals.

I thought about that.. i guess in some ways i’d rather stay ignorant whenit comes down to it… I know i’m going to suffer from all my injuries when i get older anyway, but i keep on doing it, and adding to them…

It would be horrible though, everytime i was climbing a hill to be thinking, is this it?

Yeah if i was to buy a lightwieght stem for that kind of bike, easton would be top choice. I wonder if 120 odd grams is too light really though…

My opinion, is that its one of those things thast happens… Obviously its a shame, but it sertainly wont worry me too much. I do believe though that there should be more publicity on the subject, its the first ive evr heard of it anyway… And that the tests to find out if you are at risk should be easilly available to athletes.

But i suppose you have a far higher chance of being in a car crash, or dying of other illnesses, so its not a priority to health autorities.

especially as it seems alot of people nowadays count walking to the pub or train station to go to work as excercise…

yeah, i think i shoudl find out within the first few days of next week if i get the job… Fingers crossed. And Christow kid, there are other vacancies where i may be going… I’m just applying to be a maintenece supervisor working for a centre that runs activity holidays for schools. I should stand a good chance being a qualified sparks and relatively good at speaking french… But they have lots of other vacancies for younger people, if your daughter was genuinely interested…

you’ll be dissapointed. i live in hertfordshire, and can testify it wont be half as good as where you currently are. DOnt do it unless its really worthwhile. Oh and hatfield has rubbish riding around that area, if you have to move down south, then look at somewhere nearer to the chiltern hills, eg amersham or chesham, or even berkhamstead/ tring.
