It’s shifter or cable in that case. If you leave the cable loose and move the shifter you’ll see if the shifter has friction. This is unlikely though, much more probable that you’ve done something to the cable either poor routing or wear/kinks. There’s no great advice to find this unfortunately, just looking closely and ripping the whole thing apart to look see

I generally test without the cable attached in these situations. Push against the spring to change gear and then let go and see if it changes back automatically as expected. If so, you have issues in the cabling/shifter and the mech is all good.

Why not call the shop and ask if they’ll swap you out the cassette? If it’s one of the big online shops they probably won’t have a “groupset” anyway it’ll be individual bits. Wiggle are actually selling OE parts rather than boxed product (presumably hence the price) so imagine they could be flexible. Failing that, Evans are really good at price match so give them a call and see what they can do about matching the groupset deal.

The “stupid names” are Strava segments – for people who ride with their mates :)

Such dislike for trail centres! Is everyone like this with camp sites too? ;)

Onzadog depends what you mean by “better spaced”! For me the small jumps on the Shimano are great as I get closely spaced gears for my “big gears” and then two massive cogs which are the equivalent to changing into a granny ring. The big cogs on a cassette are just there for climbing on my bike so I don’t need them to fit with the rest :)

Where are you? In the UK I’m having trouble finding shops that don’t have stock of the 46t cassette!
Definitely hunt for the XT one – the shifting is extremely smooth on all cogs as you’d expect from Shimano

I’m using 26×4.8 Jumbo Jims on mine and it’s about as fun as it gets :)

Lol Nick, I hadn’t even considered the scenario of being in when it happens! Very good point and makes me reconsider the whole topic

@nickjb when you get that ping what happens next? It’s unlikely the police would deploy immediately for a simple burglary these days so your choices then are ask your neighbor to confront a potentially violent criminal, or watch someone steal your stuff live, possibly including the expensive IP cam!

Before you blow a load of cash bear in mind that CCTV won’t make your stuff more secure, won’t improve your chances of recovery, and won’t help the police catch the thieves. All it does is provide evidence if the police happen to catch someone – they don’t actively seek to find criminals like on TV these days!
It will give you some peace of mind from a certain perspective, in that you can check when away. Of course, all that really does is feed the paranoia so you’ll check more often and possibly become obsessive.

The only way to protect your babies is with locks and insurance, and locks can be cut easily with modern tools!

If you’re traveling from Stoke then Swinley Forest is only just off your path in the grand scheme of things – a couple of junctions along the M4 from the A34 junction, but then when you exit Swinley you could hop on the M3 South which takes you direct to Southampton.

For the described requirement a cheap “cag in a bag” would be perfect which are under £5 in loads of shops and extremely light and packable. I don’t see a good reason to spend a fortune on what is effectively a tailored bin bag to be used once or twice a year. It would be different if you want to regularly use it for rainy riding, and I’m certainly on board with spending money for quality where it counts but it doesn’t sound like it does here.

Thanks I thought that might be the case but best to check in case it didn’t go down automatically :)

Report him to the police for fraud. You have account details, and the bank will have contact details so they should have no problem tracking him down. At the very least the bank can freeze the account even if the contact info is false.

Shimano do make a 36t chainring in XTR I have one on the Scale. I made a video of my second 1×11 conversion on the fatbike. This is also 42t XT cassette and also zero problems. Just needs to be set up correctly as per Shimano manual.

I have the 46t XT cassette and it definitely doesn’t drop the chain pedalling backwards when properly set up. I’m using XTR everywhere else and have the 36t shimano ring at the front. I don’t even get any noise from this setup in any gear, let alone shifting issues. It’s a bit twangy when shifting to the big cog but to be fair it has to climb up quite a way to get there!
