Is it just defaulting to a screen pixel depth that can only work at a silly small resolution?

i.e. this thing is **soooo** old that the graphics adapter can support (say) 1024*768 at 16bits/pixel, but X11 is trying to drive it at 24 bits/pixel, so it ends up dropping back to 800×600?

If you think that might be plausible could you:

    (a) Post the output of “lspci” here
    (b) Send me the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log to confirm.

If that is the problem, then in the old days you’d just put “-bpp 16” on the command line for X11. I’m not sure where that goes in the brave new world of Ubuntu, but hopefully someone will.

I had a lovely Specialized bike pump. Far better than the many other pumps I’ve had.

Dropped it somewhere at Dusk to Dawn though. Sadly missed 🙁

    Home made mayonnaise.

Probably a bit late now; takes around 5 minutes to prepare.

Oil, mustard powder, egg yolk, salt, pepper, vinegar, garlic. Delicious in a way that bought mayo never is. See Delia for details.

(Don’t try to use olive oil, never works for me).

I thought this was going to be about gel wrappers. How disappointing.

I think the ‘Special’ in American Special Forces is possibly short for special needs.

Is it the same “special” that’s used in “special relationship” ?

You know, the one TB took us to war in Iraq for. That relationship.

    Grips are in the post!

    Njee – you’re probably right.

But in my defence, living in Cambridgeshire there’s very little call for gears or suspension, whereas rigid single speeds are more likely to put up with his maintenance schedule (dump bike in garden, leave in rain until rusty).

OK, I will defer to the wisdom of STW and send him to school on it tomorrow. If it gets stolen, I guess we’ll at least know it was some very discerning thieves.

    Rule 32

Hydration packs are never to be seen on a road rider’s body. No argument will be entered into on this.

Well that sorts out a whole load of specious STW “what camelbak” arguments quite nicely.

No-one in the political elite gives a damn anymore.

There’s lots of quite frightening things happening to the environment, but nothing much will happen while our politicians are running around like headless chickens worrying about economic downfall, the ****ing war on terror and where the next vote is going to come from.

In years to come our children will look back on this time and wonder what on earth we thought we were doing allowing rainforests to be cleared, species to be wiped out, coral reefs to be obliterated, our oceans used as a dumping ground, and the planet to be generally trashed.

Anyway, screw Nature. What’s she ever done for me?

as got given said netbook by friend.

Did it work when connected to this friend’s network? (i.e. did you see it working yourself).

Could just be that the network settings are all scrambled. Seems very unlikely that it’s something special about BT homehub.

If so, it might be easy enough to unscramble if you know what you’re doing, or just re-install (prob simplest and easiest anyway).

She braked at the sight of that tiny little tree root.

He had a ton of space to go round on the right without any problem, or left if he could get over the stupid wooden kerb thing.

I guess if you put enough idiots together in the same place, bad things are going to happen.

Well, it’s been bottled around a week. It should have carried on fermenting in the bottle.

Looks like the smaller 1L bottles were OK, but the larger, 2L ones (which were previously just ordinary coke bottles) were not up to tje job.

Tastes kind of OK actually, although a bit sludgy from being shaken up.

I’ll just go and check on the taste again, just to make sure.

Wireless is just a bit rubbish I’m afraid.

Doubtless someone will be along in a moment to say that in their house it’s marvelous. And with the right conditions that’s true.

But you don’t need much to mess it up. Lots of neighbours with wireless? Forget it. Next door to big industrial machinery. No chance. Nice thick walls made of something opaque at 2.4GHz? Not going to happen.

Apparently 3ft of granite will block microwaves.

You might have more luck with 802.11n (but if you’ve just been given a wireless router by your ISP then that won’t help much). Powerline might help.

But best of all is Ethernet.

Sounds like he is just unfit.

You should explain to him what the “M” in MTB stands for.

After that, explain what MTFU stands for.

what can you do to prevent it!

    Tell him about single speeds.

    It is only Tuesday.

Seems bizarre. It will annoy lots of people while saving almost nothing.

How much does it save? About £1Bn, which is a miniscule amount.

It has bizarre effects: people with children on salaries between £48k and £55k are going to be asking for pay cuts. Families on the same joint income will be getting massively different payments.

    Inept.

You were flying round that course; I saw you go past me after your extended pitstop and I knew there was no way I was going to keep up with you.

I was determined to ride the whole lap and even made it out of one of the bomb holes

    Thought it was brill!

Solo’d and came 10th with 7 laps, which I’m pretty happy about. Rode my trusty Singular Swift, which was just perfect apart from the comedy Summer tyres.

Single speed was definitely the way to go last night. Drivetrain this morning seems fine (though just stuck the WI freewheel in whitespirit to be on the safe side). ISIS BB is a bit wobbly though.

I was running my big-ol Maxxis Summer tyres, which were very sketchy once the rain started coming down properly. And I have to admit my third lap was hard, with lots of falling off, and thinking about what else I could be doing.

But the 4th lap was much better – the rain was so heavy by then that the gloop was really runny, so a lot of places was quite easy to ride. And I felt stronger, which meant I could ride better and faster.

After that I just kept going round. Walked all the bombholes – even the skip; walked most of the Beast. No brakes really, just held on to them in a few places for reassurance rather than to actually slow down.

Start of the sixth lap I had some Torq Rhubarb and Custard gel. All I can say is Wow! That stuff is like nectar! And then the sun came up. Took off the rain coat, slogged very slowly round the final lap, saw some deer bound across the trail; felt a bit rubbish in the middle and then was up by the crazy Vivaldi music and finished!

HUGE thanks to ac282 who took over bottling for me for a few hours. It was really appreciated. Also to the other guys in the solo tent (you know who you are) offering encouragement in the pits. And to all the people shouting out encouragement on the way round. Really genuinely appreciated. Someone even took time to tell an entire joke and punchline about money and toilets.

Just keep those pedals turning. That’s what it was all about.
