The gold one is Z510. The silver one is Z510HX.

The Z510 doesn't last well; mine stretched quite quickly. The HX lasts much longer.

Dig around in http://www.kmcchain.com for more details.

Looking at Derbyshire County Council's website, there's a whole series of claims to turn this bridleway (Roman Road NW to Hope Cross) into a byway open to all traffic all the way to the A57.

The most recent (as far as I can tell) is this one.

It's currently shown as a "Non-compliant claim pending resolution" whatever that may mean.

But doesn't that imply that it hasn't been "upgraded" to a byway?

DMR revolver + WI freewheel ?

DMR hub has been problem-free. White Industries freewheel is pretty good, and can also be easily rebuilt if needed (as I found out the other day). But about £70 each.

Or ACS freewheel – mine was fine until it rusted solid, but perhaps would have been OK with some actual maintenance.

Cambridgeshire Guided Bus cost £140 million for a giant ugly thing that's not even a decent cycle track.

Seems like the Royal Family are actually doing us a favour by spending public money, because then there's less of it around for pig-trough politicians to spend on uglification and war mongering.

So my biggest complaint about the Royal family is that they don't cost enough.

I think one would want to know some actual facts before deciding:

    – how many car journeys have been saved as a result?
    – are people who get C2C bikes healthier (=reduced NHS and company healthcare costs) ?

Knowing that might alter your decisions about whether to cancel the whole thing or make it even more appealing.

I think given a choice between Prince Philip and that awful little french chap, Sarkozy, I'd take PP every time.

And what kind of person would actually want to devote their life to becoming President of the United Kingdom? Tony Blair for President anyone?

    Bleugh.

Well, for the record, I bought a new sealed bearing from ebay for £5 (*), prised off the seals and put some proper grease into it and then followed the instructions to reassemble. After a bit of fooling around it's all back on the bike and much smoother than before. But not had any mud yet.

    So they really do work.

(*) The original bearing was an Enduro one, and if that can fail then clearly buying expensive bearings isn't going to help.

Drop sam at singular an email and he might be able to sort out a test ride for you.

I was able to get a test ride the other day. Really nice bike I thought.

Maybe I already know the answer to my own question. I guess my wallet just needs to MTFU.

Yes, I ought to trim them off or something, but can never actually be bothered. Idle and lazy.

Sigh. New bearing needed. Tunstall forest mud is clearly quite exceptional stuff.

Let's hope that unsealing the bearing won't have the same effect as at the end of Indiana Jones.

    I'd recommend a Scandal outright

The OP was asking for singlespeed or geared. I thought that On-one had stopped selling the single-speed friendly 29er Scandal?

Does anyone know if any of these are demoable anywhere? I know Singular cycles seem to be very helpful indeed – is anyone else, preferably in East Anglia?

    Great theory.

    Evidence? Testable predictions?

    No, thought not.

Depends on the conditions. There's a reason you see people on 1.5" tyres round Thetford way in the Winter….but I personally would struggle on such tyres on rooty rocky madness.

sounds like the ones you are taking are OK, afterall you're still here

    Perhaps like these ones ?

Awesome. Keep at it, but maybe work on the tuning. For the good of humanity…

For reasons I won't go into here, I spent my entire formative years just listening to brass band music, and occasional shots of classical (nothing later than Sibelius, and not even Shostakovitch).

Can't say any of the things mentioned here ring any bells. Apart from Abba. Hard to escape that really without living on a desert island.

So the only recent music I know is anything that gets played at bike races 🙁

Perhaps someone with a Rohloff can suggest something, but if not, I would think you could do worse than to go across to Charlie the Bike Monger and look at his SS chain selection. KMC Z610HX might do the trick (i.e. blithely ignoring your/Rohloff's warning about SS chains).

Well, my Shimano HTII BB came with the words "improved seals" on the packet.

Following the last round of the Thetford Winter Series, they've now got that slightly stiff feeling about them that bottom brackets shouldn't have. I've taken square taper through similar conditions (i.e. absurdly wet and gloopy) without any problem.

Once they finally disintegrate I might try an Acros, or even a Hope before I go back to square taper though.

    EDIT:

Maybe the only way old UN72's are superior is in their fit and forget nature. As far as I can see, HT2 is superior in every other way.

Perhaps HT2 just can't cope with being immersed and square taper can?

    Fantastic ride.

But don't kid yourself that 100 miles on the road will be anything like the SDW.

Lots of long rides (5+ hours) off-road did it for me.

He who pays the piper calls the tune.

A lot of voters are going to be wondering who runs the Conservative party and why.

    luked2

I'd love to vote Conservative at the next election. I can't stand New Labour, and I can never work out what (if anything) the LibDems stand for. I've even been known to help out a friend with canvassing for Conservative councillors.

But it looks to me like, once you get past the weasel words, that this man has indulged in deliberate deception in order to get his place in the House of Lords. And it reflects very badly on people like William Hague and David Cameron. It calls into question their judgment, which for a politician is everything.

What a piece of work he is.

Normal wheel is a possibility I guess (although the Deore freewheels seem to need replacing fairly often as well).

But then my wheel won't be nice and dished properly – there will be that great big ugly freewheel sticking out on one side.

I'm going to try singlespeedstu's suggestion first off (need to get a pin spanner first though).

get a wheel with a proper freehub which are much
    more reliable.

Couldn't you have at least put in something more interesting? e.g. what tyre for XXX, or 26er vs 29er, etc?

So – what was it like at Tunstall? Did the 29" wheels roll over/through that gloop better than 26" wheels? Were you faster as a result?

Or is it all just marketing?

You also have to use your new bike "mainly" (i.e. more than 50%) for travelling to/from work, although you don't have to keep records.

    Q. What tyre for 650b?

    A. Whatever you can get; they're like hen's teeth. Just be grateful you can still pay the mortgage afterwards.

    650b?

    Nichetastic!

Does it actually go any faster than 26" (or 29") ?

So the real question is, is it realistic to go for a weekend's skiing in Scotland with the kids, starting out from Cambridgeshire?

    luked2
    Free Member

Quick blast round the local fields just to make sure the bike is mostly working for the weekend. Bit drizzly. Very muddy and churned up by tractors in a few places but most of it surprisingly fast, if a bit slithery.

Get some skinnier tyres. They won't pick up quite so much mud.
