Stayed here last year – chair lift up to Les 2 Alpes and it takes bikes. Wicked descent back to the campsite on a super wide and steep red graded trail. Plus plenty of walking / cyling around, including and XC route to Bourg.

With my Crests I used both the 21mm and 25mm rim tape and could get them to seal around the valve – spoke to CRC and Freeborn who both assured me I had the right tape and valves. Still no joy – in the end used a normal rim strip (25mm) and trimmed it slightly around the valve to fit on the rim, tyres now inflate and seal no problem and they are tubeles tyres. Took me a good few weeks, bottle of sealant, loads of gas cannisters and plenty of pumping to find all that out mind you – very frustrating!!!! 8O

I have a GD in 27.2 on a big heavy Kona and works a treat – easy to take apart and service, nothing complicated, rock solid (dated) engineering – but, everything you would want. Bit flexy at the top end of travel if you have it extended too far from the seat clamp, so if anything would buy a longer length than needed.

Compared to my Joplin that’s been back for service X2 under warranty, it’s a no-brainer

My mate who’s a bit heavier than me always seems to roll tyres of rims that are running conversions, particularly at lower a lower PSI – any specific tubeless tyre could potentially avoid this

Batteries work better when cold, so once charged keep them cold (fridge usullay works) – i’ve found that batteries I have in my jersey pocket don’t work as well compared to batteries that have been kept in my pack

Pedal assisted drop off’s is a different technique to trail drop offs, and used a lot by trials riders and yes, a different technique. Pushing on the pedals, squshing and then pulling the suspension all at the same time. Personally, tend to use as a “get out of jail” card when I’ve got myself into a spot of bother… 8O

Trailmaps from the Visitors Centre / Bike Shop show the route sincluding roads / fireroads so it’s easy to navigate and miss out a lot of these grindy, pointless climby bits for the sake of a £5 spend

OK if you like fireroads, even without the diversions. Haven’t done it for a bit, but if you like the singletrack, go up Whites to the top, turn right and it’s all the fun downhill bits of Skyline without the fireroads.

Rode there about 18 months ago and was disappointed (if I’m honest) – However, having looked at the clip, seems quite a bit of work has gone on since. It’s a small hillside, very steep, and seems that a lot has been made of it

Make mental note to self to pay a visit……. 8O

Navigation on 305 is poor, as is the Garmin mapping (not sure on the 800?) – the 500 doesn’t try to include mapping so makes it a small unit, that gives essential data plus downloadable to a variey of different applications.

Agree with Bunnyhop, Italy better for kids than France – particualry the ski schools. Some of the smaller, gentle resorts (incl Passa Tonale) would be Sestriere, Bardonecchia (Italian Alps) – paid about the 3k mark with some of the bigger tour operators (1st Choice, Thomson) and you get pretty rubbish accommodation but if you can handle that the budget should be fine. French very stuff about learnign to ski the right way, ski schools very regimented, nothing taken into account for language differences (French or nothing), no fun elements, no chance of the kids bottle it to hold back, change the lesson or anything like that.

I’ve used 2 S710’s for the last 6 years, until I broke the strap on one and the PC couldn’t deal with the Polar Software (no Windows 7.0 version) so changed to a Garmin, but miss the watch element. Worked on and off the bike perfectly.

Cheers for the replies – still unsure what to do.

@ awhiles, so when I slow for more technical parts of riding, if I have been bumbling along at a fair pace, it’s hard to cool down?

@ nicolaisam, it’s on glasses that are deisigned to be ridding on a bike (Endura Stingray) and are vented for aiflow but still seem to get the problem. Once steamed up, there is then condensation running down the inside so no amount of airflow seems to clear this.

    What does anyone else do?

TP only good if you are going to monitor power output, and then only if you have the time, inclination and a degree in sports science to understand it. In the end I found it was more data than I could deal with (and I was riding on the road, so easier to stay at certain levels and cadence) and my HRM data still gives me key info like threshold, cadence, GPS data etc.

If you are using a HRM instead, lots of excellent (and cheaper) alternative software around. I have used both the Polar Personal Trainer (V5) and am currently using Sports Tracks Linky Link Link[/url]and find it really useful (for training) and very interesting from a GPS point of view – it’s matched with a Garmin 500.

    Hope this helps

    Cheers for the replies.

@thv3, don’t mind spending cash, it’s more about value for money.

Rotor upgrades for my Hayes would be around £50-£85, incl the adaptors and new brakes may be in the £250 region. Partly my question was about would I get a significant upgrade in performance for this.

@Jeffus, yep – spare pads always good particularly with (French) Alps prices
