You can also buy some of this Grippy Grip Gripper– it’s like Vaseline with sand in it.

Works a treat as I had the same problem on a Selcoff seatpost / Ti frame

MidlandTrailquestsGraham – get it, you won’t look back. If you use a GPS or HRM it can also log this data.

snowpaul, like you I was going through huge amounts of spares, and wanted to ascertain best value for money products to handle type of riding I do – that’s why I ride an Alfine now!!!

Back on track and not wanting to comment on your desires for doing this – Sports Tracks will do it for you and can also track miles, rides, GPS routes etc should you want to.

I ride a 456 steel with an Alfine 8 hub and my expereince is pretty much the same as Saccades. I’m running a 20 tooth rear and 32 front ring, and spin out around 28kph on the road.

The bike / setup was bought as winter project to avoid the heavy maintenance schedule and costs associated. Have been running since early Sept, covered around 2000kms of which 80% has been offroad and apart from tyres and a couple of chain tensioners that’s all I’ve spent on it. Cleaned about twice.

Advantage of the 456 is that it’ll take a good range of forks, so when the summer comes, might put some lighter tyres and bigger fork on it and take it for a DH spin 8O

I’m 5ft 11 and a 56cm road bike is too small for me, and ride an 18″ MTB frame with a long (10cm) stem

Les 2 Alpes and Alp D’huez are also close and have strong MTB scenes – you could stay at Bourg-d’Oisans which is n the valley between the 2. Both excellent for XC and DH / freeride stuff

Uh……get some miles in – long steady distance stuff like Audaxes, build to within 80% of target mileage within a month or so of the event than tail off.

Overpriced and under made – some equally as good shorts out there that are a whole lot less IMHO. Santini, Campagnolo to name two.

Whilst I apprciate everybody’s bits are different the best thing is to try as many as possible and then deciding…….I guess

It’s looking horribly complicated – I only want to play DVD’s when I’m away and seems that taking a DVD drive for the laptop would be a whole lot simpler……..

Sealant very unpredictable IMHO – when I take a tyre off and see all the mangled up sealant then Its clearly worked somewhere, but for punctures that you hear I’ve never experienced it working.

If you want a really big laugh have a root around on the No Tubes website where a nail goes into a tyre and (they reckon) it seals…. 8O

Went to Italian Alps last week (Bardonecchia) and a) it snowed a lot there and b) they had lots of snow to begin with.

Had a great weeks skiing, reds and blacks, no off piste/back country although some available

Going to Cervinia at Easter also – snow reports fine at the mo

Never liked French skiing anyway 8O

Got a road bike, but a bashed up mental state as had a couple of big accidents with cars in the last few years and decided to give up my road riding and racing as a result – only non-traffic venues for me I’m afraid

    Mmmmmm……BMX, there’s a thought

Plenty of good singletrack particualrly rideable on the doorstep around East / West Dean, Dean Hill, Farley and then down towards Alderbury & Downton – a good OS map will show you the tracks / trails. New Forest would be ok if you want a sandy, flat and featureless XC long ride. Really depends on how far you want to ride / travel…???

I use a Garmin 500 as a normal bike computer, plus it’s good for looking at where you have been.

I also use a Satmap Active 10 strapped to my top tube for new routes, as it has full OS map capability, with a reasonable screen so that I can either import a GPX file and follow a route already planned or I can navigate as per standard map. It’s very accurate, so even with thin, hidden trails it gets you where you need to be. I don’t use it all the time, suppose I could if I neeeded to to record some data but in my mind it’s not for that it’s more about it being a navigation aid.

Been right round the houses trying to find something that did both (ride data and decent OS mapping) and couldn’t get anything at all that would suit. I can’t comment on the new 800, all Garmins prior use their cra**y version of an os map as the base map and it’s right proper grim.
