To the OP – I’m not sure if you meant Eurostar (the train) or Eurotunnel (Ferry alternative)?

FWIW – Eurostar not good with bikes, they need to be in a bag / as luggage so not even a standard bike bag. For Eurotunnel, no problems with either roof, tow ball or rear screen/boot mounted rack – just advise at the time of booking.

I’m in 2 minds, might take my 456 with Alfine, might stay home – either way it’s gonna be 2 sets of pads @ £15 per pair – minimum!!!!!!!!!!!

My 456 steel was different altogether from the carbon one I have currently – I ran/run an Alfine on both, slighlty longer fork 130mm on the carbon one – and have totally fallen in love with the carbon one. As per FOG, I liked the steel one, but could have taken / left it whereas the carbon one I seem to be riding all the time.

Other than the fork, not a huge difference in specification on the Giant / Cube. Mongoose is a completetly diffent bike – great if you want to launch yourself off stuff and go fast(er) downhill and not worried about how long it will take to ride back up.

Of the 2 I’d probably opt for the Giant and get my upgrade purse ready, as within about 6 months / 12 months of riding most of the drivetrain / wheels stuff will be done for if you ride 2 times a week or more.

Dont forget also that once you obviously get the MTB bug, decide to sell all your road bikes, kit, gear, book, mag subs and cancel your club membership, you might have a little upgrade pot to play with :D

It depends on how you like to ride, I’m 5’11 and generally run a large and also own a Nerve XC (in size large) – and it’s quite long and stretched out. I do like to ride that way for XC long rides. I live on the South Coast and it’s all flat, bridleway type riding. If I was riding more aggressively or trail centre type stuff, I’d go for a smaller size, that’s a bit more chuckable.

The frame size doesn’t really equate to a higher front end, just more stretched out but you can still get it quite low if you need it that way….

lucien – I would argue that a tape measure gives you some form of measurement.

Try standing on your bodyfat scales with a cast iron weight and see what happens to your bodyfat %…

TSY – As long as you did this every time, and the trend was going in the direction you wanted, it would be a reliable form of measurement.

FWIW my Tanita scales on athlete mode have my body fat at 9.6% in the morning and <8% in the evenings, depending on hydration and how much I have ridden that day

Just put my details in to Navy website and fig comes out lower than on my scales by 2%.

Both systems based on some sort of algorithm, but at least the scales include some form of measurement before the calculation – nither is perfect.

As with all these things, trend is more important than which number you hit, so if by measuring with whichever method, the trend is going in the direction you want, then it’s right.

Ocado a good experience but need to buy wisely IMHO, as some things much more expensive. Stick to their own brand stuff, including fresh fruit and veg and generally pretty good. Just keep an eye on the prices for branded stuff

Gunt, being the word used to describe the overhang of a fat person’s stomach that covers the crotch area.

Used as follows “look at the gunt on that”, “You gunt’s showing mate”, “I was gunted today, and feel sick”, “He/She’s a bit of a gunter”.

Go, go, go, go, go, go – Mark of Zorro is awesome.

The long Syfydrin trail was wet when I went a couple of weeks ago, but plenty of ways to get around – It’s a combo of completely natural riding (ups and downs) and man made trails. Hippity Hop does it for me every time, and you can ride back round and do it again, and again, and again.

For me, it’s either the best or close to the best trail centre I’ve been to – largely due to the mix of natural and man made trails.
