On a related note – I always wondered if the the farmer who has the motorcross track / jumps over to the west (near star wars) would be interested in allowing other forest users onto his land

DT78, do you mean the field with the footpath along the side, that takes you up to the services at Rownhams? Here Back of Services

I’d be interested in helping with formal approach to the landowner?

Mate just got back and reporting that “everything” is flattened except star wars and motorway run

Pump track flattened a couple of years ago along with the pre-workmans run. As soon as it gets jumpy, built up or anything with a gap it seems the bulldozers are called in. The fc only manage the land and I think it’s privately owned. There have been many attempts to get some sanctioned trails but the ownership, proximity to a big estate, shared usage, odd fires and many illegal motorbikes riding all add up to limited negotiation. Sad but true, getting something sanctioned is a bit of a pipe dream.

I find the further back they go the easier to drop my heels. If I ride as per normal xc cleated riding, the pedal is under the ball of my foot and much more difficult to adjust how my ankle / foot moves. Keep trying different positions until you find one that suits as we are all different.

The footpath is tight and narrow towards the Southampton end. Night Time its ace, daytimes its mega busy with walkers and to be fair to them it is a footpath. If it was wider then fair game but it is a case of getting off and walking sometimes just to get past.

Here’s my response from Garmin earlier this year with exactly the same problem

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

For out-of-warranty repairs, GARMIN used to charge parts and labour.
This became a resource intensive task of estimating the repair, and trying to contact the customer with the estimate, and so on. Many customers wanted an estimate before they sent the unit in for repair to determine if the unit was worth fixing or not. Obviously you can’t do this until you see the unit.

About five years ago, we switched from the parts and labour method of calculating repair charges to a flat rate overhaul system.

With this system, there is a single flat rate charge for complete factory overhaul of a specific product returned to the factory for service. The customer knows up front what the charge will be, so there are no surprises. The factory overhaul process is a thorough process which brings the unit up to the same specifications as when it was new.
Any cosmetic issue are addressed, like scratched lenses, cracked cases broken antennas, worn out NiCad battery packs, etc.. If possible, the software in the unit is updated to the latest version applicable to the product. Any modifications or updates are installed in the product as appropriate. Our goal is to send a product back to the customer in a new condition, regardless of the condition it was in when it was received.

The fixed rate repair/replacement cost for your Garmin is: £ 68.08

If you want to make use of this service I would recommend contacting product support by phone and they should be able to provide you with a reference number for your Garmin and arrange any necessary payment details. Product support can be contacted at the following,

    Free 0808 238 0000 (within U.K.)
    +44-870-8501242 (outside U.K.)

If there is anything else I can help you with then please let me know.
Alternatively you can search for a solution here: http://www.garmin.com/support

    Kind regards,
    Sam Taylor

If you are talking new MK’s & RQ’s then no not much difference, RQ’s sh**e in the mud not sure what the new MK’s are like but really couldn’t be any worse.

If you are talkind old MK’s (they are still for sale) then major differences – certainly would never put one on the front wheel of my bike

Hi Tim, I’ve found the Polar ones to be a lot more consistent than the Garmin ones – if you were working say, above 145 hr, then 1300odd calories is about right.

Swiss have some weird rules about where you can ride ie mountain paths etc. We were in Zermatt in April, and little or no signage for bikes, limited bike shops and couldn’t find any trail maps or anything in the tourist office or train stations. Certainly no purpose built freeride stuff – the French resorts much better set up for this ie PDS, Les 2 Alpes or even Italy (Pila). Having said that it was the tail end of the winter ski season, so it may have been uber swiss efficiency going on, ie no summer stuff out yet. Cost of living was mahooooooooosive, compared to Italy (Cervinia in particular) and whilst the signage and mapping appeared no better in Cervinia, my guess is that the attitude and approach to a bit of “off-piste” biking activity will be a whole lot different (as long as you do it with style).

I think, having been to both places, a guide is a must at the very least.

You can also expect sweaty blokes in baggy lycra and some pongy people – but in a endearing kinda way – usually a friendly bunch, good atmosphere, good catering, nice routes, always someone up the road or to ride with on the bigger / longer events. Generally, no hint of racing, much more about companinship and riding together.

Hard to say, as it also depends on where the fixings go and that depends on what furniture you have on the inside…..

Grum – I was more making a comment about the lack of use of the natural environment, terrain, natural resources etc rather than a comment about how easy or not it is to ride. A beautiful part of the world, where so much more could have been made of the location. I’m sure it’s as easy or hard to ride as one wants to make it or has the skills for.
