… speaking of which, much of the gravel is sharp flinty stuff and you’d better take plenty spare tubes if your tyres aren’t heavy duty

Sometimes 2 or 3 times on a 2 hour ride, so yeah mega grimmsville 8O

Walked 400mtrs from where I was working to hotel – didn’t think I’d get there in one piece due to the wind…. 8O

There is, almost all is unsigned, unmarked and hard to navigate unless you know where it is or know a local. At the moment, large parts of the NF are very water logged, and so can end up hub deep in mud/water/sh*te. Not trying to be a naysayer, just realistic….

If you are South of Salisbury, then plenty of bridleways in around that area that are great on a CX bike…..try Alderbury, East & West dean and down towards Downton – you can probably ride from the door.

I made the mistake of putting a 160 Van R on my steel 456, and it was horrible. Hard to pedal well, and on any climb hard to stop the front wandering and lifting. I’ve also run it with a Fox 100 RLT, and couldn’t get on with either, found the ride hard and unforgiving. Its now has a 130mm coil Tora on it and it’s much more pleasurable to ride…..

I’ve got a Bagpuss soft toy. It sits in the chair by the fire and makes a yawning sound when you pick it up.

Depends on what you want to do and how long you might take to get there with the caravan?

The Jura and the Vosges in eastern France are well worth visiting, as both riders and non riders with plenty to do and quite unique local cultures.

If you want to stay in Switzerland then the lakes are well worth a visit, as is Annecy.

As above, depends what you want to do….

Skyline walk in Bath (National Trust) is signposted, and gives great views of the city. Bath itself is expensive for food and accommodation and if you don’t need to be in the city centre, there are some great pubs, B&B’s, smaller hotels on the outskirts. Vobster Inn is good food and nice rooms, the Moody Goose is not bad, there is a best western out by the Uni which is good value.

Still, the locals will be used to a revving engine up there anyway. There was the usual ‘posse’ of yoofs on various stolen MX/minimoto/mopeds at the crossroads.

Affectionately known as “pikey crossroads” in some parts

Ridden road bikes for years, then had a couple of big accidents (with cars) and seemed like lots of others were also. Couple of guys I raced against got killed during races, hung up my big wheels and went off road. Since then, I’ve had more injuries, accidents, cuts, grazes, scrapes, blood, gravel rash than all my years riding on the road but loved every moment of it.

Give you normal mtb trails a go on it, take it slowly at first, build up. Same skills really as per mtb, push for drops, pump and weight off the back ( and on the drops ) for descending – works fine for me without all the faff of on/off , running et al. Too aggressive and the pinch punctures come, so you’ll soon know if your line choice snd speed are right!

None near the campsite, it’s that and nothing else. Cable car closes around 9.00pm, there is path goat track back from the Les2Alpes to Venosc if you fancy it, and it’s clearly signposted

Nighlife up in Les2Alpes could be described as “lively”, plenty going on at least….

    South Downs

Bought a whole bike direct from them and it was a very good experience, super quick and totally as described (it was one of their ex-demo ones, that they sell mega cheap).

Here – you can walk 100 yds up the hill to the chair lift and there is an awesome trail down from Les2Alpes to the bottom. Plus it gives you full access to the whole Les2Alpes trails

    Champ du Moulin

They have rooms, chalets, tents the whole 9 yds. If you are in a car, Alpe d’Huez is a very short drive as is La Grave, and then the other 5 or villages to the Italian border….lurvely riding

    Haldon Forest?
    Dartmoor? – Highest point 621m – Here
    Exmoor? Dunkery Beacon 520m

Not sure how high Afan is, a quick look at the map doesn’t show anything much higher

Dry, dusty trails down south, in March…..at the present time that seems a dim and distant thing – there is so much water, slush, mud and flooding around

Have you considered that rocks might be another option – less weather dependent at least, so perhaps N. Wales or up with the Sweaty’s?

Other than that, something self supported in Spain / Portugal – a nice easy jet flight, cheap accommodation, map, maybe a mate or two?
