I am about the same age, my knees are ok and bought a DH bike 2 years ago – I’ve done various uplift days in the UK, a couple of “push up” rides and quite a bit of ski resort summer riding. I’m so glad I did, I get yo push myself as hard as I dare, out in fantastic countryside, and give myself a right good workout – skills wise. The DH riding gas complemented my other riding and whilst my DH bike doesn’t get used anywhere near the same amount, it still gets a fair amount.

Anything in the New Forest would fit you bill, plenty of flat / fire road rides that could either be out and back or a loop that rake in most of the scenic elements of the NF. Maps from tourist info office, bike hire centres and I think also from NFDC.

I really hope no one was seriously injured on that ship, but the way the person “brains” that pillar made me laugh out load

Depending how your drive down goes, consider stopping in the Vosges on the way down. Lac Blanc bike park is worth a day (chairlift, short runs, not massive queues) and the road riding around there is great.

As is the XC riding – some if it is very tough, rocky, narrow singletrack – if you head for Gerardmer the tourist office has loads of routes on a map
