High Intensity Training (note – no interval in there) a la Doug McGuff is very appealing. There is a lot of science to back it up, it’s safe and working out once a week and still getting all the gains makes it hard to resist.

I’ve had two bashes at it about 10 years apart and it’s definitely not for me. Firstly, I like to workout in the morning and the workouts left me utterly destroyed for the rest of the day. Like really struggling to stay awake in the afternoon. The most recent attempt also sent me into depression. So, never again, for me.

However it might work for you, but for it to work properly you need to be prepared to go to a dark place and become good friends with pain. I don’t care if my current training is less effective as I actually enjoy it.

Having said this, there’s a lot of value in understanding more about the HIT approach, which places a lot of focus on injury prevention.

It was our first time to watch DH and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The best bit about being here, apart from the atmosphere, was seeing how the riders move about their bikes, and how they work with and react to the terrain. There’s a level of detail that you just don’t get on the TV and it was thrilling. I would definitely come back.

Downhill at Fort William for me. First time going there to watch downhill so I’ve got very little in the way of expectations but I’m looking forward to it.

That looks much tidier than a tensioner. I’ll be interested to hear how well it works.

If you can get past the macho title and writing style then the ‘simple and sinister’ programme by Pavel Tsatsouline is really good.  It is very quick to complete a workout, offers progression, is simple (hence the name), trains the basic movement patterns and produces ‘what the hell?’ type responses when you follow it for a while (which is the ‘sinister’ bit).  For example, I did nothing but this for a few months then easily broke my leg press personal best when I did go to a gym.

It really is very basic but provides a great foundation for strength and mobility.

Apparently there’s been an influx of these ‘tenting’ videos on Xhamster and PornHub following Glastonbury. Go for it!

    “Apparently”…??!!  So you’ve heard?

    Depends on your diets….

Good point…vegan, so plenty of fibre…gulp!

    Less arguments and better sleep.

This is what I’m worried about really.  Also, we’re both over 50 so frequent night time trips to empty the bladder are going to occur.  Two tents it is!

What are your individual tent options? Have you got a stash of ultralight 1 man tents?

Doesn’t everyone here?  I thought you had to demonstrate that, along with proof of a wood-burner and a career in IT before approving your membership?  But no, I’ve got a cheap Naturehike tent – the Taga I think – which weighs just over a kilo, a Nemo Dagger 3p which is about 2.5kg with the ground sheet, and  a Durston X-Mid2, because the Nemo was just a bit too bulky for me and the missus to go hiking with – she only agrees to go if all she has to carry is her sleeping bag and clothes.

Transition Klunker as it looked cool and was lots of fun to ride with a rigid fork, single speed and only having one brake – a coaster brake at that.  I don’t know what possessed me to take it to Glentress or how I survived.  It was a joy.

We also have a blueair. It’s not a magic bullet but it helps.

No. No interest in it. I worked out quite early on that I’m faster than some and slower than many. I have no desire to reverify that. I also don’t care whether I’m faster or slower than anyone else. Having fun is more important.

What I don’t understand is why people race who have no chance of winning. Surely the whole point of racing is to win?

Weights and inline skating. Oh yeah, I’m also 51, not that it really matters. The guy who runs the skating events is in his 80s.

I think the stack had increased in the new one too. I’ve got the old model and have to use a lot of spacers under the stem and a riser bar to compensate for the lower stack.

Brick Lane bikes accept cycle to work vouchers and will do you a custom build, so you could get their hitchhiker bike and ask them to put hydraulic brakes and a hub dynamo on there. (I can’t recommend the hub dynamo enough, especially for commuting).

It’s a great podcast and inspires me to keep on doing my bit to help bring about change.
I try not to get too emotionally invested in it though because car brain is so deeply embedded in the culture, and the commercial rewards of continuing to sell cars, whether fossil fueled or electric means that those interests are going to continue to determine transport policy in favour of cars and manufacturers and to the detriment of people and the planet.

I found that story quite inspiring. It shows you don’t have to drive to get about and with decent investment it could be much easier. Personally I’d much rather catch a bus than have to drive anywhere.

I’ve just started using Xert and I’m really liking it. It’s adaptive in that it recommends workouts based on your fatigue and training load. It also feels much more balanced than either trainerroad or wahoo systm, both of which burned me out.

There’s a bit of a learning curve to using it as it’s not the most intuitive, but once you get the hang of it, it’s really quite simple, although you can go deep into it if that’s your thing.

It’s also much cheaper than the others.

These are lovely but probably a tad more expensive than you’re looking to pay Adapt masterpiece

I agree with Leffe. I’ve had several pairs of Seba skates and they have all been excellent, but the value offered by the decathlon skates looks unbeatable.

However the biggest factor with any skates is the fit, which is really personal. If you wanted to get some advice from a shop, who also offer free returns / replacement if the skate doesn’t fit, then the I can highly recommend the team at Loco skates. They are all skaters and really helpful.

This thread convinced me to stick some HT PA-03 composite pedals on my bike in place of some DMR vaults. I like the Vaults but I think these plastic pedal is are better in everyway. I can’t see me going back to metal now.

Down 1.5kg this week and 11.5kg since starting using Noom in mid December. Still got a long way to go but decent progress so far.

I use a burley nomad two wheeled trailer for my big shop. It can easily swallow 3 big bags of shopping, and I can carry more on my front and rear racks, if needed. I think the heaviest shop I’ve come back with has been about 40kg worth (uphill to get home I might add) but I could up that too about 60kg fairly easily.

The added boon of this is that I’m getting free exercise. Studded tyres and waterproofs mean that I do this year round. I actually enjoy it, which I never did when I owned a car.

I’ve been on a plateau for two weeks now, despite regular exercise and hitting calorie targets. I’ve got faith in the process but it’d be nice to see the scale moving again.

I’ve also recently acquired an Epiphone Les Paul. It sounds and plays brilliantly. I’m amazed at how many tones you can get out of one pickup.

The other thing I really like is that I’ve got fat fingers so the nuts have been a bit too narrow for my liking on every other electric guitar that I’ve played, but this is just a tad wider so I’ve had not issues with not being able to fret chords properly.
