When you even consider getting rid.

I had the same dilemma on my new forks, so I lost the rise on the stem and some off the bars (from 30mm to 20mm rise) and put a 10mm spacer top & bottom.

Overall I gained 25mm on the steerer length and I figured that to be a less expensive option than what I would lose if I sold the forks with a short steerer.

I don’t know when you’re moving down, but keep hold of my email (in my profile) and I’ll show you a couple of routes about 8/9 miles from where you are (south Datrmoor). Give me a shout when you’re ready to ride.

Regularly ride around that area. Let me know when you’re going next and I might be able to show you a couple.

Use the limit screw to stop it shifting too far across (i.e. in to where the big ring used to be).

I like that Mondraker – but the more I see the more I go off the gold?

I’ve currently got black/red, but it looks a bit bland? What could improve it with out going over the top?

I wear 661 Veggies and they are only large size and I have mahoosive legs – so be careful on the sizing. Especially on any of the neoprene type as they do stretch. Dimensions for you to compare, in case they come in handy? Mid Quad = 25″ – Mid Knee = 17″ – Mid Calf = 16″.

Flown with Virgin Atlantic twice into and out of San Francisco and not been charged to take bikes at all.

First trip, the bike bags were opened and had a right good rummage through. The second trip, nothing.

Insurance – I just have home insurance that covers the bikes away from home.

    No. :(

This year I have ridden all through the winter to make those sunny days even better and what happens….

The first bloody sunny days we get and I get a stinking cold! Gutted.

Does his mean you won’t be visiting Fairfax?

Oh no…. don’t make me feel guilty! :-) I’m not sure Charlie? I am just looking at planning something for 2013. The general opinion amongst us is that we probably will come back to Cali, as the other options are looking pretty expensive. If you do one of those now famous BBQ’s of yours then that may sway it??

Bend, OR. If I never rode anywhere else in the US I wouldn’t feel like I was missing out.

+1 for Moab and The Whole Enchilada. 1 of the best rides in the states

hey ltheisinger…I live here in the US and if you are going in Sept. I’d say North Carolina. Pisigh forest is said to have some legendary trails, also Ashville N.C. is quite the bike-friendly place, don’t limit yourself just to the western trails, the east coast has some fun stuff as well…tho Colorado is a mighty fine place to ride…not sure on the weather in Sept tho.

Davis WV also has the Plantation Trail, also considered one of the best rides in the Country, a bit rough tho, so it all depends on what you’re looking for.

    Kitz_Chris – Member

There’s an Enduro on the most famous trail in the world this September in that Moab place

    Enchilada Enduro

I’ll be racing it – if you’re looking to be in the area at that time, I’m sure it will be a blast!

Some more excellent options, the planning will continue – hopefully we will get a bit longer now, so the plan could be to start in Cali and end in Colorado? Long trip I know….BUT….what awesome riding!

Brake pad stoppers? i.e. to stop you pulling the pads together if you accidentally pull the brake lever when the brakes are off the bike?

    EDIT: Too late.

    Bluebird is spot on!

I found out about the chainline issues on the VP in a very bad way. I had a really bad accident caused by the chain slipping on the pedal into a jump which meant i ended up in a cast for 6 months and with a foot that will never function correctly again in my life.

I went for bluebirds second option (as it worked out cheaper and less complicated to get the parts).

From what I have seen (in terms of feedback) people seem happy with them. I had one on a test and quite enjoyed it. Although I did end up buying an Ibis.

lovely pics – It was awesome over there. Perrin was behaving himself and we both had a ball – even after the massive OTB next to a load of DofE stompers.

    Same again this weekend anyone?

Would love too! Been trying to get out for another ride with Les for weeks, but….. I went and bloody hit a tree on the bike last weekend, the result….. 2 broken ribs, fecked shoulder & knee! Hopefully out the weekend after? (I’m hoping ribs don’t take that long to repair?… I wish I knew?)

Stayed at the ‘San Remo Hotel’ a couple of times, very quirky – but very comfortable (has its own parking if you book in advance). I think it cost me about $80 per room (Sept 11) It’s within walking distance of Fishermans wharf etc. Very nice people and good cafes/restaurants close by.

Would certainly recommend. (I would stay there again)

Ps. Apparently it’s the oldest hotel in San Francisco as it survived the ‘Great Fire’ by being draped with red wine soaked sheets!! :-)

Ha that pic dont look good fella but we all have bad days best just to think about the good ones!
If I’m having a bad day it’s usually on climbs no energy! Just get your self better then go harder!!

I think that’s why I’m so gutted – I had been riding well up to yesterday, then it all went wrong.

    jedi – Member

you have to remember that everyone makes mistakes and that you’re not a machine. we all, have off days

True. However, that’s why I’m trying to get a date to see you Tony, then maybe there will be less bad days… :-)

Yep know the feeling. Still good excuse to go out tomorrow!

Tomorrow! I think I might be off the bike for a couple of weeks – having suffered from broken ribs in my MX days, I think that’s where I’m at now!

Foxyrider – there is a place in Newton Abbot (not far from you) that does anodising and they might throw it in the barrel with something else to get the colour back?

Teign Metal Refinishers – I think that is what they are called?

They have done a few bits for me in the past (inc. a complete frame) – and they are VERY good?

I know (not from experience of course) that a Honda diesel engine ‘could’ take up to 50/50 petrol/diesel….according to the Honda techs. I don’t know what you are driving though, so not sure if it would apply to your motor?

Did something similar years ago. Denver>Fruita>Moab>Bryce>Zion>Grand Canyon>Durango>Breckenridge>Winter Park.

Too much driving really and the million dollar highway from Durango to the i70 was a total nightmare in a big RV.

That was almost exactly what I had written down after previous posts. I don’t mind the detour if it means having that ride in Moab. The two most recent California trips meant approx 2500miles and some iffy roads up around the Downieville area in the RV – but well worth it!

    Thanks all! Anymore?

    I did the same in 2010 & 2011 – cost breakdown:

    2010 (2 People Traveling in RV): £3740

    2011 (3 People Traveling in RV): £4750

    Both included:

    RV Hire (inc. Insurances/Taxes/Mileage)
    Flights
Hotel (first night stay in hotel – legal requirement of Insurance on RV)
    Fuel
    RV Park Hookups

You will need about $500 on a credit card to pay the deposit on the RV, but you get this back when you return it.

The increased cost on the 2nd trip was bigger RV & additional flight. If you fly with Virgin the bikes are free (or at least they were in Sept 2011)

If you are going with your own bikes, I would recommend hiring a bigger RV than suggested (we took a 25′ for 2 people & 30′ for 3 people) – both sizes were spot on.

We took about £250 each for food and beer and as long as you don’t eat out every night (we ate out about 5 nights), which we didn’t because its great getting the fire pit going and doing your own mahoosive steaks! That will about cover it.

We did about 2500 miles on both trips. We covered California (and on the first trip we did Las Vegas as well). California comes highly recommended!

If I can help anymore, my email is in my profile.

Whatever you do, don’t get any solvents on your carbon frame or it will melt the outer coating and the rest will unravel like a wooly pullover.

Am I being over protective of my first carbon frame?

Having never owned one I just worry about messing up and ruining my frame.

Mmmm? This could take shape if you keep putting the trail names on here. So far I reckon I could fly into Denver and then head down to Crested Butte before heading West into Moab and then back around?

Keep the suggestions coming (especially the trail names) as I am looking them up and watching the videos. Cheers.
