I'm with rockthreegozy – I would say anything below any part of the top bolt would be a no? I know I am stating the obvious…but just in case (we all have our moments!)….you don't have any spacers under the stem do you that can be removed?
ltheisingerFree MemberUsed to run XT on everything – now run SRAM PG990 and love it!

thought this was a thread about lightweight full suss bikes?!?
heckler? 28lb giant?
light for me is sub 23/24lb
Lightweight? What is lightweight? The meaning lightweight is different depending on whether you ride…XC, AM, FR or DH…seeing that I am in the AM category, the 26.8lbs that my heckler weighs in at is pretty damn good considering – brakes, forks, wheels….all of which will probably be heavier than that you can get away with on a 'FRO' XC bike for sure!
My bike will take a hammering, unlike some of the weight weenies on here, although VERY nice bikes.
ltheisingerFree MemberIt took ages to get to the boxers on this thread – glad I did though….I've had em all my life and love them! Bit 'thick' though (or should I say…pretend to be until they want something!) – Here's mine…

I like the look of those XT wheels.
Cheers – they're the XT M776 – All Mountains

nothing wrong with my foot if you want me to "make sure it's ok"Haha! 8O Nice one….yeah I'm gutted – I started building in November and finished it last week (not like I've been able to do anything else!) – but it took a while to source all the 2nd hand parts!!!
ltheisingerFree MemberHere's mine – Santa Cruz – I haven't weighed it properly yet (as I can't carry it far with broken foot!), but with a mate hold the scales and dropping it on them it came in at about 27lbs – but not really that fussed as it needs to be sturdy, rather than light for the single track of california later this year!
The worst of it is I haven't ridden it yet cause of this bloody foot!!
ltheisingerFree MemberHmmmm….indeed….decisions to make eh? I love my pushed rp23 if that helps??
ltheisingerFree MemberYou can fire up the air ones? I'm 15.5st myself! The push tune will be done to suit your weight??
ltheisingerFree MemberOh!!!! that's a subjective one, a coil on a heckler??!! 8O So many times I have heard good reasons for both….I don't have a coil on mine either, but I have to say I am not regretting it yet? I have the pushed rp23 and it's crazy good! But I did think about changing at one point, so far I'm glad I didn't….
I am sure loads of others will say you should change!!
ltheisingerFree MemberNo buddy it won't – if you have the post 2007 Heckler – I have a 2009 heckler and it won't fit mine? BUT, what year Heckler have you got? Doesn't the pre 2007 Heckler have the same size as the cove (200mm x 50mm)? Can't remember, but I used to have the older heckler and I thought it was??
ltheisingerFree MemberIf it has the custom linkage as per one in pic below the shock size is 7.875" (200mm) x 2" (51mm):
ltheisingerFree MemberSounds like a good excuse for new bits! :D And we all love new bits!! if you're anything like me and you have a partner, you'll keep this as evidence to them when the package arrives!
ltheisingerFree MemberYou can run the front mech as you rightly stated with a SRAM shifter, but not the shimano rear mech with SRAM shifter unfortunately.
ltheisingerFree MemberYes, some are interchangable, just the fittings need to be the same at the lever end, but it will depend on what type of caliper and how much fluid needs get from the reservoir to the caliper, some will be over kill, others will not push enough – I wouldn't really recommend it though, you're best just finding a set at a reasonable price that do the job – if you give me a budget buddy…I might be able to help? I have a set of Saints which I don't use anymore (M800's) and they are awesome! Not expensive if you buy 2nd hand either!!
ltheisingerFree MemberMmmmm, they're ok, nothing special but will do the job! (depending of course on the type of riding you're doing? Are you buying new or used? Have you got a budget in mind – could probably put some recommends your way then.

Have you got any plastic waste pipe lying about by any chance?
I'm with him^^^^ or a metal tube (scaffold pipe with padding around the bottom (pipe cover foam or something like that?) and slide over the steerer?

Ideally you need to keep your heart rate in the fat burning zone, but with a some cardio heart rate zone, which will maintain the fitness
The good old "fat burning zone" raises its ugly head yet again. You do know that the "fat burning zone" is really not a particularly useful thing at all if you're after losing (or maintaining) weight?
I am fully aware of that, but thanks for pointing it out….its a means to monitor the heart rate at a level in which the "text books" say will burn more calories, but of course this is a very subjective topic anyway, as it varies for everyone at what rate they will burn calories, but I just think 'talls' was looking for a 'close enough' comparison and whether he could continue to burn calories through cycling – which he will of course….any exercise is better than none, eh?
PS: I was 18 stone and now 13.5 – so I have burnt a few calories myself over the past 18mths, through mainly cycling… :D
ltheisingerFree MemberNo worries mate – you'll surely achieve that! So go for it! The fact you're on STW probs means you prefer to ride anyway!! :D
ltheisingerFree MemberIt really does depend…..10k on treadmill running, will be less resistance than a 12k ride on the road with hills etc….therefore less calories.
EDIT: talls – the above isn't in response to your post above, its in relation to the previous two posts.
ltheisingerFree MemberOk, in that case….the bike will burn more….the variations given to by hills and resistance will vary the heart rate between a fat burn rate & followed by a cardio fitness rate (which is optimum fat burn as it helps the metabolic rate after the exercise has finished). Ideally you need to keep your heart rate in the fat burning zone, but with a some cardio heart rate zone, which will maintain the fitness – so to this end a HRM would be great! This optimum fat burn zone will depend on your current rest rate & your current higher rate? But if you get that right on the bike, more calories & probably fitness benefits will show!
ltheisingerFree MemberWhats the frequency of the run/ cross train currently? Daily? And will the commute be daily?
ltheisingerFree MemberFox 32 F-Series? or if on a budget Rock Shox SID or Reba – again, both can be picked up for a good price 2nd hand…
ltheisingerFree MemberI have seen them as short as 165mm before, but it's certainly going to restrict the market you can sell too & the bikes you will be able to use then on! I also should say those I have seen cut that low before are usually dual crown and take a direct mount stem….
I would start looking for a new steerer/crown assembly – gutted!
ltheisingerFree MemberAs others have already said – Pikes, can't go wrong for the money you can pick them up 2nd hand!
ltheisingerFree MemberIMO….very similar to the Heckler 'looks' wise (except of course the F&R travel, before anyone says :D), but for build….here's my Heckler.
ltheisingerFree MemberMmmm? Looking at this pic (not idea I know), but appears that the cable does run "straight down", so this would indicate that you are in the wrong cable guide??
ltheisingerFree MemberMy mate and I share a 'Rough Guide to MTB in SW'….but typically he has it at present, so I'll grab it off him and if I can find anything I'll scan it and mail it to you…
ltheisingerFree MemberNo help I know, but…..I lived there for 6 months and never found one!
ltheisingerFree MemberYeah fine then buddy… 104mm BCD is pretty standard – so any of the 32t 104mm BCD rings will fit. I forgot to say that the Shimano's shift pretty smooth as well IMO.
ltheisingerFree MemberMmmm….never really that worried by the chain rings – I usually go for something quite standard and hard wearing (Shimano XT) – and they are cheaper than the Middleburn!)…..also would look at the SLX which comes in at £25 or the LX at about £21.
As for size "most" are 104BCD if you have 4 bolt – what cranks have you got and I could probably tell you? I know they are FSA, but what model?

I can't help thinking that I skimped on the physio. Do absolutely everything they tell you to, and ask them if there is more you can do.
Thanks for the advice about the Physio's – lot of suggestions on this side of things, looks like the best plan! Well done on your recovery!
hitman – Member
Lots of core work – gets some exercises from the physio and make sure you do them correctly and regularly
Yeah, core work is going to be important I think – I've lost so much fitness & strength not being able to walk, so looks like its some hard work for me coming up!

Just a thought, would a good pair of stiff race shoes help you?
Funnily enough I have Just bought myself a pair of Shimano SPD's – with real rock bottom soles – looks like I was thinking along the same lines as you…..but with the added factor of fear of not wanting the same injury again!!

was dead on the operating table for a while aged 10,
broke my hip at 31 on the bike
back spine injury last year 4 months off bikeyou can come back from anything if you put your mind to it, after my hip break i turbo trained 6 days a week 3 times a day for 30 mins, and did 2 sessions of stretching for half hour a day after 3 months i was told i could go and do a 5 mile ride, so i did but i did 5 laps and did 25 miles it felt great
listen to your physios anything is possible good luckLook like you have taken a real beating over the years! Good advice on training, thanks buddy – and there's that Physio's popping up again!

Don't think I ride that much slower now, but definately feel safer.
Same here buddy – I have now finished building my new SC Heckler, always felt safe on my previous one, so thought I would do the same again and this time I'm going stick to the AM!

Read my thread about my new bike, Crushed spinal cord for me, paralysis, almost died 3 times, nearly lost my left leg due to DVT, just bought a new bike…….
Gunna read now! Fair play buddy….

Funny that in a way, after 20 odd years of riding/racing motorbikes without a scratch I got in to MTB's, only to put myself in hospital and a month off work…
Dangerous bloody things.
That's exactly what I have experienced, maybe the Veteran class would have been a good idea for you & I!! :?

Broken femur twice in cycling accidents still going strong at 51
You can get back your fitness you just got to work at it slowly and dont give up.Take it easy on learning new DH skill. Start small work up.
I am generally very impatient – guess I'll have to change this for the recovery?! :?
AS for DH – the bike has been split and sold – I think that's the best option – All Mountain for me from here on in! :-)

I broke my back in a car crash, along with both my legs.. I'm now fat and unfit, as the pictures show….
But I will get fitter… It's just gonna take a while.
OUCH! That's gotta hurt! :( I hope you sort it out buddy!
ltheisingerFree MemberIt was worth posting, because when I have been 'Googling' stuff they come up all the time, but I have always wondered about delivery times etc.! Maybe next time, I'll give them a go…cheers.

my op could be tomorrow or a max of 13 weeks, but I will take around 4 months to recover after so a fair bit of rehab.. it would be very handy to know, I really am not sure what we should be able to get from a GP or Hospital in the way of rehab.. I guess I should really have asked, but it was the last thing on my mind!! that said if I see them before you I will update you / this thread..
Nice one cheers – and vice versa – I'll let you know. I also feel a bit of a simpleton for not asking!! lol!
tracknicko – Member
i got to go limpy swimming with my hot physio! yay!
You never mentioned that before, now I'm gunna have to find out for defo!
ltheisingerFree MemberCrAsH…tEsT..RiDeR – Member
free Hospital gym… is this service available all over the uk or just the odd place? asking as I have an op on my neck to remove some discs and am not sure what rehab I can get from the Hospital for free, I am already with a physio so that side is covered, anything else anyone can tap into after an op? I do like the idea of a proper rehab like a gym
When are you having the op? I am going back to hospital in two weeks ans I fully intend to find out more, so will let you know if you like (or it's not too late for you?)…
ltheisingerFree Memberwwaswas – More good advice thanks….
Cheers tracknicko – I going to find out, I'm back seeing the consultant two weeks today – and I know what you mean by living there, I've been in and out for the last five months, so a few more in the gym won't matter.
Cheers guys.
ltheisingerFree Membertracknicko – Member
do all your physio and ask for extra excersizes at the hospital. i attend a hospital gym with physio;s in attendance (and its free!)
Great advice – I haven't been offered this and didn't know it was available! Cheers buddy.
ltheisingerFree MemberThe frame and the forks are both IS mounts – so assuming your brakes are post mount???….You will need Post to IS mounts at the selected brake disc size.
