Ha, you can’t imagine the deliberation (still ongoing) iainc

Solaris….but will I loose out on flickability(??)

26er….laughed out of the shire/fail to keep up with all the 29ers as they instantly faster riders due to the larger circ.

Or, as the reviews seem to suggest (ok, the single review I found that side-by-side-ed 26er vs 27.5 [which is 26.8 by all accounts] vs 26er) the perfect all-rounder that shares the merits of both sizes = 27.5

If money were no object, I think I’d go for a new 27.5 …………..I think.

    Yes, fine example of alliteration.

..should add that when I turn the center dial (compression rate?) nothing signif/notable happens.

TBH, the only obvious changes are:

    1) Blue dial a full- R turn = locks it out.
    2) May have imagined rebound changing by turning the red dial at bottom.

    …anyone has similar experience(s)?

    Cheers

Reading this thread as been close to epiphanic…. I am OFFICIALLY out of touch with virtually everything biking.

I’ll never have £3k to spend on a bike, however I might be able to scrape £1200 and go for that 2nd hand Soul I’ve been thinking about for ages….got to be better than my ’05 RM Slayer full-suss??

You are a lucky man, I’d love to retro-fit one in my bus but they’re quite expensive 2nd hand. Have you had it service yet?

    Ok:
T5: Don’t even ‘look’ at a first gen T5 – period…loads of issues. More recent are better, more comfy but very expensive to service, less one can do oneself an again very unreliable for their promise.
    Evidence:
X2 plumbers, one being my father-in-law the other a friend – both of them utterly regret ever selling their T4’s.

Vaux: Ugly, plastic and zero cool-points – reliability issues (earlier ones)

Evidence: To be fair I only know two of these, work colleagues: both of them visited the garage for ‘between service issues’ < 80k. As per T5, less options for conducting your own work…garage biased – I’m out for all of the above.

    French: ?????????????????????????

    Summary

There is only ONE van …. 2.5 VW T4 TDi. Full service record would be ideal(does not have to be main dealer, in fact I wouldn’t take mine to a main dealer), don’t panic about mileage. Clearly low mileage would be nice but trust me when I state the bullet proof nature of the 2.5Tdi engine (note this is NOT a VVT turbo unit, the curse of all modern tdi who’s owners run them on supermarket kak). Like I say, service record & evidence.

I know nothing about the other T4 variants.

    Enjoy :)

    Pootle-People,

Thanks for supporting Master Love Tublette (he loves that BTW) albeit for just a ‘stolen-kiss’ of moment. He learned loads today and has is ‘mustard; to commence his winter turbo programme ready to burst back on the ‘Pootle Circuit’ when he has larger wheels. It was a tough call to depart; a tear filled the corner of my eye as I watched you all riding off into the warmth of the day (Ha).

Great to see a few faces from the last one, so looking forward to next one – Xmas day?

Jules, Chris.. thanks for your efforts – you can defo put me down for x3 donations next as we missed the pot today.

RichPips: That would be great if the lads could hook-up for a ride. I think Alex was little ‘star-struck’ by Tom as I’ve not stopped going on about Tom making short work of everything on his cross rig last time.

I was so looking fwd to seeing the tandem in action myself.

    Cheers all.

My lad’s chomping at the bit to join in – I can always take a short cut if need be….I’ve promised him his first ‘beer’ if he makes it round.

    Big day.

I ‘get’ what the OP is seeking – I’ve worked for protracted periods in various desert environments around the world and have used the ‘Hot’ water container method for showers…..works a treat, however miss that pre-dusk shower then you’ll be waiting until the following evening ….can get smelly!

A kettle would be sadly inadequate for the volumes OP suggests. In fact, I would suggest that OP forget mounting said canister on the tailgate (unless you’re happy to move your van as the Earth rotates…T5 sun-dial sounds like a PITA……however they do breakdown regularly so at least it’ll have ‘a’ use…) and go for a roof mounted ‘surface’ of, say four or six canisters. This way, gravity can work to great effect with your hydro needs…. imaginative hose-work needed…

Like I said, set this up right and it’s very effective.

16” to 20″ wheel: manufacturers tend to fit gearing way too high for dedicated off road. If folks are really interested on how to change this to deliver a ration of approx. 10/20% below granny ring (super low, essentially) then PM me.
Don’t spend hundreds of pounds on the hype – they don’t deliver, you little off roaders will not make it up the short tech climbs.

Clearly, all depends on where you want to ride.

I tend to avoid such situations these days but in the past visualising a hot, soapy tit **** kept my mind off the misery

That was inspired! ….and really made me chuckle…..right, back the ‘I’m so wired’…context

THanks, + love the photo content…awesome.

    Smurf,

Please ignore all of my waffle….I didn’t read your thread….can see your goals differ from mine.

Offer to loan out my taps (bit expensive to buy for effectively a one off) if anyone’s inspired.

I have some nice phots, but can’ work out how to get them over from google images.

Apologies for the distraction…..please continue without me :)

    Hi Smurf,

Shame I missed this from the off as I converted old XT cranks for lads 20″ + had bespoke bash// granny ring chainset unit mad up (to eliminate the ugly & redundant middle & outer spider arm sections).

A very neat and effective off-road upgrade – I’ve been going on about how carp (yes, even Isla bike) standard kids ratio’s fail to ‘match’ real trails with ‘proper’ climbs.
“but kids don’t have the power” was the collective marketing reply. No, but boy do they have exceptional balance skills! My two were & continue to climb very steep section at incredibly slow rates on account of their amazing ‘righting’ skills.

..sorry, went off on one. I have all the correct taps, no need to shell out for fancy cranks.

    Final job looks like….

I love threads like this one, real and funny.

Sadly, I’m your antithesis when it comes to lights. They are in an old Rab stuff-sac, within my (small green) ‘electrickery’ stacker box in the garage.

Sadly, and this extends only to bike related regalia! WRT other admin tasks of minor import, such as self-asst tax ‘Must do’ and speeding fine processing, I’m as organised as the weather………..which, ironically can be organised……….apparently??

Yep, the link was a little cut-paste-run-didn’t read but I’m still finding cheaper; esp with ebay fee’s and posting.

Yeah, jokes aside, alfa that’s what I can’t understand too. Really feel for the OP as we can all agree bike bits consume the beer tokens :(

I’ve been running 819s for ages and like you have inflate up to high PSI’s without a problem – as you say to bed in (if that’s really necessary ??) then deflate for the ride.

I’d like to see a slow-mo of the rim as the tyre makes an exit. Surely this has to be a design flaw?? I have no evidence to back that up mind you. Or, could it be designed in so that the rim fails at a lower pressure to safe-guard the user???

I used to commute from Chesterfield to Buxton and the quarry trucks were without doubt the most patient and considerate drivers on route – I used to get a wave ect from the regulars!

However, the less said about Parcel Force (and all other foot to floor delivery services), farmers (pulling very long and low trailers), range rover and not forgetting the audi Avant and tradesmen crews.

    Think I’m done?
