I have a commuter with discs and a “nice” summer bike without. My ultegra rim brakes stop about as well as the cheaper disc brakes. However my commuter rides through winter and I suspect my rims will now last a hell of a lot longer with discs. I don’t think the difference is as stark as with MTB, but discs certainly have their place.

I found a box of Chomps at work, 24 months out of date, ate them over a few weeks. didn’t die.

I’ve just noticed I have a VERY worn rim on a Tiara front wheel (it’s had 1000s of miles of County Durham winter commutes, no no too surprised) I might use the opportunity to save the hub and give this wheel building lark a go. If it goes bad, what’s a new Tiagra wheel….£45?

I’ve just had a really stiff Ultegra front STI, changed cables and everything, still stiff. I removed all parts I could, flushed the living hell out of it with degreaser, then flushed that with water, then WD40. I left it to dry overnight on a warm radiator then squirted the internal with a really thin oil. It looked to me like the factory grease had mixed with road slop over the years and clagged up. Shifts like new now.

I did the same couple of weeks ago, blue sealant and glitter all over the fridge and dryer. Still finding it now, Mrs unhappy.

I’d found a table that said this measurement equates to 700×38 but thought I’d check with the STW mind before spending 😉

Ive got a carbon and an alu version of this (both in medium, 5ft 10) great bikes. I rode the alu as a winter commuter, it’s great.

I’ve been commuting for about 7-8 years now, 125 miles autumn/winter a week, more in spring, peaking to approx 200 this time of year. Jam on toast every morning, couple of bananas mid-morning and a wrap for lunch. keeps me going MOST of the time.

I once spent a week chasing down a click on my carbon roadie, then I jumped on MTB and the click followed. It was then I realised it was my left knee!

Are limits set correctly? Sometimes they’re JUST able to reach their limits, but give em another half of quarter turn to ensure the chain is adequately seated.

MRs has a terrible phobia of slugs and our house was plagued with them, we knew they were coming in somewhere in the downstaors bathroom (extension) and passing through here up the hall into the cupboard and eating the dog food!. I took the bath panel off to reveal massive gaps between wall and floors, filled the shit outta this wwith expanding foam. No sight of the buggers since.

I’m up to 1016 commuting miles as of this evening….took me 85 hours 37 mins, that’s over 75 separate rides and 79,000 ft of climbing. I’m sure I couldn’t ride it in one long 85 hour ride though!

Check your spokes and cones. Big crash might have loosened cones and created a bit of play

LOVE the apocalyptic genre…books, movies, games you name it.
Just could not get away with the prose in the road, keep meaning to go back and try it but never get around. If you want a truly awesome apocalyptic book checj out the stand by Stephen King or Swan song by Robert R. McCammon.

I use an old worn down road tyre, no tread left on it for road use, but seems fine for turbo duties

14 miles each way in the winter, 50/50 road and off-road, commuting pace is 12-13mph. Always slower in the AM than the PM interestingly.
I have a summer road route of 18 miles each way which averages between 15-17mph. Both routes approx 900ft of climbing. I have noticed I have been getting slower lately 🙁
