I’d like Keaveny to go to Radio 1, or anywhere apart from 6 Music. I think Northwind summed Zane up perfectly, I don’t particularly like him, but I think he genuinely loves music, so I respect him for that.

Fensa the organisation run by cowboys for cowboys

Totally agree with this…the FENSA ‘guarantee’ is pretty much worthless.

You need to check your policy wording….CIC only covers what’s on the list of covered conditions, and different insurers have different lists.

Joan as Policewoman is great….seen her live a few times, she is amazing. Her previous album The Deep Field is even better (IMHO).

Is the work pension defined contribution or final salary? If both your pensions are defined contribution, I’d merge them into a single SIPP to make it easy to manage.

I’ve no experience with SRAM, but I had a rear Hope hub which was exactly like this. Once you know, it’s not a problem…just make sure you don’t put outward force on the cassette (unless you want it to come off!).

I have one, which I tether via bluetooth to a S4 for data. It works just about OK, but it can be a pain in the ass getting the two to connect properly (sometimes the TomTom needs restarting or the phone will need a kick to connect…not a problem if your at a desk, but not safe if your driving and a major pain in the ass if you leave work at a busy time and need to know if there is a problem on the route home). They still do them which connect directly to the cell network, which I think would be a whole lot better. Think it’s about £30 premium, and well worth paying for (if it works well?). I just use the S4 directly if i’m in an urban area….it’s so much easier to just say “Navigate to ……’ then mess about with finding postcodes and putting them into a TomTom.

I now only use a TomTom if i’m going into a rural area where there is no data connection. Google maps is pretty good now, as long as you have data connection.

My Mrs bought an X1 25d last year. It’s obviously not a looker , the dash interior quality is amazingly horrible for a modern car (let alone one from a ‘luxury’ brand) and the steering is very heavy at low speed (no servortronic in hers). That said, the engine is amazing, no bling to indicate its a quick car, the cornering and ride are brilliant, the seats are really comfortable and they are cheap(ish) second hand. With winter tyres, it’s brilliant in the snow / ice. The 8speed auto box is really good. It has roof rails and isn’t too tall for getting bikes on and off. It also does mid 40’s mpg without trying, which for 218bhp is pretty good.

It’s the first car I’ve ever driven I’ve actually really enjoyed driving, plus once your in it you can’t see how bad it looks.

IME, your correct, its the wind resistance, not the weight which has the biggest impact. The difference in economy between towing at 50 and 60mph is large, so that makes me think it’s not the weight.

I had a Smax for 3 and a bit years….no problems with reliability (apart from a crack in the Cat which it had from new and took ages for Ford to fix). Not sure what to buy next, the Smax isn’t perfect, but with 3 kids, I’m not seeing many better options?

The lounge at EMA is back in action after a refurb. It’s not bad, but they have a dress code, so no shorts etc. I don’t know if they have booze or if it’s dry (I fly in the morning, so not relevant to me). Free bacon / sausage baps if you ask at the bar. If your flying early in the morning, pay in advance for fast track….when EMA gets busy there aren’t enough machines to buy the fast track upgrades, so you have to queue to buy the fast track pass…which kind of defeats the object. If there has been an event in the area (bike racing or Download) the queues are horrendous through security.

I park in the Long Stay 2, which is easily walkable to the terminal, and reasonable. Book at least a few days in advance though….the booking system won’t recognise bookings made the weekend before a Monday flight :-(.

There is now a Dixons at EMA (maybe there always was?) which does decent deals on Apple stuff.

    i got a quote for a tiguan r line 180bhp auto a few months ago via http://www.broker4cars.co.uk
3k down and £340/36 per month and a ballon at the end.

Have I worked it our correctly…that would be 15K over three years to not own a car? That sounds pretty insane to me. My wife had a brand new Tiguan for 3 years, over which time it lost about 6K. Servicing was paid up front (£250 I think), didn’t cost a penny, other than fuel. It was a base model, but she was happy with it. No hassles with having to prep it when handing back.

Shaun Keaveny…..no musical taste beyond Led Zeppelin and the Stone Roses, no humour beyond a 15 year olds irritating impressions. A lazy ‘self deprecating’ egomaniac bellend milking 6 music.

I thought modern smart TV’s will act as a PVR by just adding a memory stick? We have a Sony TV which does this and it appears to work fine (i never watch tv, so i tried it, but don’t use this feature regularly), so you might be able to save some money / reduce box count by ditching the PVR?

I fitted a set of winter wheels to my wifes car in November. I did a 5 hour round trip today starting at -6.5 degC over ice covered roads. They have been amazing. The first hour of the journey was on untreated B roads with lots of bends. The car just felt solid. They took a lot of the stress out of the journey. I don’t fast, but I could drive at speeds approaching normal without feeling worrying they car was going to slide. I honestly don’t I could have done the journey without them.

Cost wise, it’s a no brainer. The alloys were £62 per wheel and are narrower and smaller (17″‘s) so the tyres are cheaper than for the summer wheels by about £50 per tyre. I recon I can probably sell the wheels for £100ish when she sells the car. Apart from shelling out the cash upfront, and storing the second set, I can’t think of any reason not to do it.

TBH, they are probably just about worth £15, but not much more. I bought 4 for £100 a few years ago and TBH I thought they were pretty poor value.

It does get a bit ridiculous, especially at the end of each season. I enjoyed it, some good acting, some funnies and nicely shot, but they do go totally over the top with some of the plotlines.

It’s a bit trashy, but I’ve enjoyed it.

I’m finding office for mac slightly odd (feels like a Windows version half converted to behave like a mac application, and it looks a bit cheap), but I think it’s being revised soon. VM’s appear to run really well, my PC based laptop used to take 5mins to shutdown at the end of the day after i’d been running lots of VM’s, but they appear to close in seconds on the mac.

The only real problem I’ve had this week was trying to copy a VM to a portable hard drive…took me half an hour to work out although you can read NTFS partitions, you can’t write to them :-(

Other than that it’s going well :-)

It would be great if we could keep the thread positive (like Three Fishes spotlight search suggestion). Anybody have any more tips or point me at resources to start getting a warm feeling about OSX?

I’ve bought the laptop now, I’m determined to make a go of it. I’ve used Window’s for 20+years, so it only reasonable to expect that a different OS is going to require some work to get the best out of it.

I made a bit of progress last night (programmer mode on the calculator and Command-Shift-3 for screen shots).

The monitor worked (it’s a Dell 27″, can’t remember the exact model no), but wouldn’t display at the native resolution. Googling it found other people with the same problem with that monitor.

It would be great if Spotify introduced a ‘donate’ button, so you could donate a few quid to artists who’s music you have enjoyed. I used to spend £50-100 quid a month on new music, and now I just pay a tenner on Spotify. I still want to support artists though.

There is a Pitchfork plugin for Spotify, so you can read the review and click directly to the music which I’ve found pretty useful.

The more expensive ones have a much better cleaning action, they are not just packed with gimmicks. Ive just been through this, our expensive one broke, so i bought a 60ish quid one which was total pants…not the same brushing action at all. Phillips do a money back offer, so i returned it and got a Diamond Clean one. It’s brilliant, feels like a scale and polish from the dentist.
