At home with our week old first child, who is as good as gold all day, but then screams and screams all night. Can anyone assure me that a) this is normal, b) that it will pass, and c) what the likely time frame is?

We are going through exactly the same thing with our third, so, a) yes it’s normal, b) yes it will pass and c) 3-4 months (for our previous two), but it will feel much longer ;-)

Feels like hell at the time becuase you don’t know that it will end, but it does, and looking back, it won’t seam that bad.

Once the baby starts handing out smiles, it all seams a whole lot better.

My fridge has an SN in the serial number

If it’s a Meile / Liebherr, your lucky, we were sold an ST (18 to 38degC), which is apparently what is sold in the UK as standard.

if you want to put a fridge freezer in a location it wasn’t designed to run, you can hardly blame the manufacturer.

Reading the manual for our fridge / freezer, it states it designed to work in temperatures above 18degC. And IMHO that it ridiculous. That’s a warm house. I have been heating the house when there is no one in it to make the freezer cold, I can’t see how you can defend that as being sensible?

I would suggest running it as normal, maybe just turning down a little

+1, that’s what we do. Looks like it’s getting cold for Crimbo!

Minimum operating temperature for most fridges (and fridge freezers) is 16 degrees.

I found this out recently too. It’s another example of the hopeless energy rating systems. We bought an energy efficient fridge, but I have to heat an unoccupied house to make it work.

You’re believeing the BS they feed you. Sorry, but you are.

It does not matter what you or I believe or what opinions you have, it’s what the T&C’s of the boiler manufacturer are for their warranties. At random from W-B website….

Cost sounds OK to me, I’ve phoned a few heating engineers recently and they would not look at taking work on for any cost. TBH, i’d be a lot more concerned about the quality of the installation and workmanship than the cost.

I agree the thegreatape, warranties appear to be tied into powerflush. When having work like this done, a difference in cost of (say) £200 is insignificant over the life of the boiler compared with having a decent job done.

OK, sounds likey, the 350 was pretty much 1st generation.

We have the Sony BDPS350 and an LG one (cost c.£130) and I had a Panasonic one for about a month. Out of the 3 the LG is miles better, for the simple reason it starts up and shuts down miles quicker. The Panasonic took about a minute before it would even open the draw, and was really slow to read disks (even w/latest firmware). The Sony one was really slow too, dunno if the 370 is faster?

There are people who take the firm handshake thing a bit to far and use it as an opportunity for what’s basically a physical assault under the guise of a greeting. I know two people who do this, and it really pees me off. Horrible macho nastiness.

sounds like the fan is seized

It is! Thank you ever so much for that, I gave it a push start and it’s working! Do you know if these are a standard part? I can smell that there has been some electrical type arcing as it’s been trying to start the fan, so I think the fan motor may need replacing, but for now, it’s working.

Nice one…I owe you several beers!

thanks all, the boiler is a Myson Orion 75si, it’s making a humming noise (fan?) but no pilot light. There are no controls to light the pilot (think it’s all automatic). I’m based in South Notts.

It’s only because people are stupid enough to tell their insurers.

Don’t think I agree with this. I had some minor crash damage to a car years ago and when the guy from the insurance company came to look over the car, he started going to the passenger side of the car. I helpfully told him that the damage was on the drivers side. He responded with ‘I’ll get to that later mate’. He wasn’t checking the damage, he was checking over the car to see if he could get out of honouring the claim.

If there is one thing more stupid than telling their insurers, it’s paying for insurance that is worthless, that is really stupid. Insurers will try to weasel out of claims if you don’t have the right speed rating, i’d have thought winter tyres would be too good an opportunity to miss to not pay a claim.

We have a Sony that’s two years old now, and that enables you to configure per port (so the Wii can have fast response time and TV/blu ray can have motionflow). I’d be surprised if you can’t do this with more recent Sony’s.

Turn off any 100/200/600 hz procesing, this all adds to the latency as it takes the TV time do do the image processing. Some TV’s have a gaming mode which does this.

I’ve just sealed some plaster using some of the B&Q sealer (instead of watering down emulsion like I usually do). Three things I like about it…

If the emulsion is non-drip it’s a pain in the ass to dilute, you don’t have to do this with sealer

It’s easier to wash out of brushes

It’s colourless, so if you overpaint or splash, you can’t see it.

I can’t remember what it cost, was not expensive, and personally I thought it was a bit easier.

IMHO you can learn a lot and get some really good results with a bridge camera. They are different to DSLR’s, and offer a different feature set and some significant advantages. You might prefer one? In my experience, there are a very significant number of DSLR users who buy them because they think it’s the thing to have and rarely take any pictures/ have no idea about the basics of photographic technique.

Look at the ‘best picture you took in the last month’ thread on this forum, and many of the best pictures don’t come from traditional DSLR’s, and there have been some great shots from cheapo compacts.

It’s a lot cooler having great shot’s from a compact/bridge camera than dross from a DSLR.

    Liebherr for refrigeration

… err not so sure about that one, our ‘energy efficient’ Liebherr fridge stops working when the ambient temperature drops below about 8degC (manual says it needs to be +18!)…so we have to heat an unoccupied house during the day so the freezer can keep the food cold

I bought a second-hand 420EX from ebay for c.£80 years ago, its been good. Never tried the Jessops ones, maybe search Talk photography or dpreview forums for opinions? The Canon one should hold it’s value pretty well though. If it were me, i’d bite the bullet and get the Canon.
